"Will Return" Caption (trope)

Sometimes, creators feel the need to stress to the audience that a work is part of an indefinite ongoing series, in order to make sure that they look for the next installment. A particularly unsubtle version of this is to simply announce it in an out-of-universe caption instead of "The End". The traditional format is some variation of "[HERO'S NAME] will return".

Sometimes this can be the sad sign that a work was intended to launch a Stillborn Franchise.

Not to be confused with And the Adventure Continues, which is where the intended final installment of a work doesn't have a permanent ending, but suggests that the characters will continue adventuring into the future. See also To Be Continued for more serialised works, and Sequel Hook for an intentionally conspicuous plot loose end that could provide the seed for a sequel.

    Anime & Manga

    Asian Animation
  • At least one television airing of the Lamput episode "Lamput Meets Tuzki" puts an image of Tuzki peering around the corner of a building at the end of the episode. The building has a sign on it reading "TUZKI WILL BE BACK!", alluding to the next crossover episode with him, "Tuzki the Intern".

    Comic Books
  • IDW Publishing's comic book prequel to Bumblebee ended with "Bumblebee will return" to complete the miniseries generally being an homage to the James Bond films. Ironically, the comic is incompatible with the continuity of the actual film due to being based on an earlier draft where Bumblebee had earlier adventures on Earth and the final film changing the script so that Bumblebee had not been on Earth prior to the events of the film.
  • Lazarus (2013): The final page of the Risen volume ends with a caption reading "Forever and Eve will return".
  • Wasp (2023): The final page has the statement "The Wasp will return!", as Jan is about to learn Whirlwind has been murdered in his cell.

    Comic Strips
  • Betty and Billy and Their Love Through the Ages: The first installment of this Sunday Strip from the 1920's introduces protagonists Betty & Billy by dropping a crystal ball in their lap the pair can use to see the past. The narrator promises readers (who needed to wait a whole week for the next strip to be published) "-you shall follow in the path of my Betty and Billy and their love through the ages. And next week you shall see them as they saw themselves in the crystal back in the dim beginning of things..."

    Fan Works
  • In Alarm Clock, the author's note on the final chapter ends with "Ditzy Doo and Doctor Hooves will return..."
  • The Differentverse: A Quest for Harmony ends with an author's note stating that "The Bearers will return in... Different Bearers: A Case of Family", and confirms it will be centered around Scootaloo's family.
  • A Diplomatic Visit: The story ends with an announcement: "To be continued in… Diplomat at Large"

    Films — Animation
  • Rapsittie Street Kids: Believe in Santa's credits end with the claim that "The Rapsittie Street Kids will be back with A Bunny's Tale" and a voiceover from a character promising to be back with the Easter Bunny. Unsurprisingly, due to the massively Troubled Production of Believe in Santa, no Easter Special sequel was made.
  • Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ends with the words “Miles Morales will return in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse”. Fitting, given the film’s cliffhanger ending that leaves Miles at the mercy of an evil alternate universe version of himself while Jefferson remains in grave danger.
  • European edits of The Transformers: The Movie have a voiceover at the end proclaiming that Optimus Prime will return. This was an Author's Saving Throw due to massive fan backlash in the USA to his death in the film.

    Films — Live-Action

    Literature
  • The Saint books frequently ended in many editions with Simon's "haloed stick man" symbol and the words "Watch for the sign of The Saint, he will be back".
  • The author's afterwords in the Sharpe books (up to Sharpe's Waterloo) tend to end with the sentence "Sharpe and Harper will march again."

    Live-Action TV

    Theatre
  • The epilogue of Henry IV, Part 2 promises a continuation "with Sir John in it". In the event, Shakespeare either changed his mind (according to one theory, after receiving complaints from the descendants of the historical Sir John Fastolf over how their ancestor was depicted, and according to another theory, he fell out with Falstaff's actor, William Kempe) or was trolling the audience, as Falstaff dies off-stage in Henry V without ever appearing.
  • Young Frankenstein, the second stage musical based on a Mel Brooks movie, ends with the ensemble claiming "Next year, Blazing Saddles!" Such a project never materialized.

    Video Games
  • Bendy and the Ink Machine chapters finish with Bendy will return
  • Castle on the Coast: Parodied. The credits end with the message "George the giraffe will return." Then, after a long gap in the text, we see "Wait... will he? Hmmmmmm... Wait a minute, he hasn't even left yet!" We then cut to The Stinger.
  • The credits of Crash Twinsanity end with Crash Bandicoot will return.
  • GO! GO! Hamster Chef!'s 1.10 update expands the ending and add credits that end with "Hamster Chef Will Return".
  • The comedic Hildibrand story arcs in Final Fantasy XIV usually end with "Hidldibrand will return..."
  • Every game in the Kingdom Hearts series that has a secret ending ends with the phrase "Connect. KINGDOM HEARTS", which is the series' unique twist on this trope since the secret endings usually directly tie into a future installment, and in many cases one of the next two games. Starting from Kingdom Hearts III Re Mind, which ended the Dark Seeker Saga, this phrase is changed to "An Oath to Return", which more directly implies this trope.
  • Life is Strange: Double Exposure ends with "Max Caulfield will return".
  • Sky Racket closes its ending credits with the caption "Racketboy and Racketgirl will return". The game was released in 2019 and there haven't been news of a sequel so far.

    Webcomics
  • In El Goonish Shive, the penultimate strip of the "Escape From The Mall" storyline promises "Kitty and Felix will return in A future storyline".

    Web Original
  • The finale of the first season of YouTuber DeepBlueInk's animated series Deep Space Discounts ends with a stinger of Bucket floating in space with the words "DSD WILL RETURN" displayed on their screen.
  • Parodied in The Nostalgia Critic episode reviewing Morbius, which ends in the Critic, alongside characters based on internet hoaxes (specifically, Shazaam, the Momo Challenge, and Graggle Simpson) encountering multiple Jared Leto characters (the Joker, Junior, Niander Wallace Jr., Paolo Gucci, Paul Allen, Angel Face, and Morbius himself) and deciding they should all team up, which is followed by captions announcing, "The Leto Eleven will return in Morbius 2: It's Morbin' Time."
  • Some Jerk with a Camera: Parodied in Part 2 of the "Top 15 Attractions That Closed in 2017" episode of "State of the Parks". Tony assumes the persona of Captain Actually to explain why Ellen DeGeneres' animatronic from Ellen's Energy Adventure looks ugly when it was gifted back to her on her show before he dies of cardiac arrest. The credits end with "Captain Actually will not return."
