Race to Clean Up

Go To

Cleaning dirty things isn't fun — it can get time-consuming to get it clean again. But you know what's worse? If the messy thing isn't yours and you were in charge of keeping it clean until the owner comes back. Now, it's an all-out race to clean it up before the owner arrives.

In fiction, there are many scenarios that lead to this trope. Very often, it consists of a character doing something they weren't supposed to on another person's property. Maybe they were hosting a Wild Teen Party, and now they need to get the guests out and the property clean. Or maybe the character was completing a task that led to them accidentally getting the property dirty. However, there are rare scenarios where the mess is beyond the character's control, as an uninvited guest barges in and makes a giant mess. Whatever the reason, it's up to the character to clean up the mess before the owner gets back, regardless of whether they were responsible for it or not.

Often, the trope ends in two ways. If the owner doesn't find out about the mess, the owner assumes everything was normal and the character gives a huge sigh of relief. However, if the owner does find out about the mess, expect them to get scolded heavily by the owner, usually ending in some kind of punishment or consequence.

Can overlap with Hard-Work Montage when characters are seen cleaning busily. Compare with Race Against the Clock, another trope about completing a task under some kind of time limit. Also compare with Cleanup Crew, where both try to hide evidence of a mess (though that trope is more related to covering up a violent crime).

  • Subverted heavily in Project X (2012), this was the plan for the leads initially, but the party spirals out of control so much that it becomes impossible to fix the damage, including the car that gets driven into the pool by a vengeful midget. Eventually, police are called in and the neighborhood becomes aflame from a drug dealer wielding a flame thrower that the fire services are called in to dump water from a helicopter to put it out, destroying the house entirely. Ginger shakes his mop through the window and accidentally hits a policeman, who then angrily tries to climb in through the window. Just then, Mrs Tibbets comes back and pulls the policeman back out.
