Premiere

Go To

A premiere is, of course, the first episode of a show, and can be broken down into four rough types:

  1. 75% - Welcome Episode
  2. 14% - In Medias Res
  3. 10% - Everyone Meets Everyone
  4. 1% - Miscellaneous

Compare Pilot (a conceptual demonstration of a show, though many successful pilots are ultimately aired as the premiere).

Examples:

Live-Action TV

  • Black Hole High: "Wormhole", which is also the pilot, starts with Josie being the new girl in Blake Holsey High and promptly being sucked by a black hole along with a friend.
  • Deadly Women: The pilot is a 52-minute-long Made-for-TV Movie that covers four cases of women throughout history who committed murders using poison.
  • Frontier House: The first episode is titled "The American Dream" and introduces both the living conditions, the historical era, and the contestant families. Most of the plot is about the families arriving at the homestead location via horse-drawn covered wagons.
  • Odd Squad: The first episode "Zero Effect" takes the In Media Res approach and starts with Olive and Otto already working together, though this episode is presented slightly differently than the others as it's meant to be an introduction to this world.
  • Sadakatsiz: Like all episodes, the first is untitled, but it starts strong with an In Medias Res of Doctor Asya dining with her husband Volkan at the Güçlüs'. There, she dramatically reveals that she's aware of the affair between Volkan and Derin Güçlü. The episode then goes on to an extended flashback of how she learned that painful truth.
  • Third Watch: The first episode is called "Welcome to Camelot" and sees Ty and Carlos join their respective departments.

Western Animation

  • Wing Commander Academy: "Red and Blue" establishes the main conflict (the human Terran Confederation vs. the alien Kilrathi Empire) through a mission being conducted against a carrier. The five cadets who will serve as leading characters are also introduced.
