An All-CGI Cartoon is an animated TV show or movie that consists entirely of artwork made by computer software and does not contain any frames drawn on physical media. Many 2D digital animated shows are made using software such as Adobe Flash, Toon Boom, and OpenToonz
, or other digital artwork utilities. Meanwhile, 3DCG works tend to be modeled and/or animated in industry-leading software such as Autodesk's Maya and 3Ds Max, or even Blender. In modern times, this has become the rule rather than the exception for works made outside of Japan, France, or the United States (the latter in the case of television animation). Whether computer-made 2D animation should fall into the category of traditional animation or be lumped in with computer-generated imagery is usually up to the viewer — Wikipedia's list of computer-animated films
excludes features such as The Simpsons Movie and South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut.
Most CGI animation tends to be Western. While there are definitely examples of Japanese and Asian forms of CGI, almost all of the major films, franchises, and series done in computer animation are from the United States, Europe, or Canada.
For studios known for producing CGI cartoons, see Blue Sky Studios, Crest Animation Productions, Guru Studio, Illumination Entertainment, Glitch Productions, Mainframe Studios, Moving Picture Company, Pixar, Sony Pictures Animation and Walt Disney Animation Units.
Compare Machinima. Also see Painted CGI, a hybrid of hand-drawn and CGI.
