Grandpa Gray (Literature)
Nothing's gray about Grandpa Gray!

The story Grandpa Gray (1996) is a Short Story or Flash Fictionnote  from Scholastic Inc.. It was written by Cass Hollander with Elliot Kreloff credited as the illustrator. The story starts with the narrator telling the reader how the Title Character is actually a very interesting person; by repeatedly using the metaphor that he's not Gray.

Due to its length of only 68 words this story can usually if not only be found as a printout for preschoolers and kindergarteners to put together and color as an arts & crafts. It's also used to teach them about metaphors.

This book provides examples of:

  • Black Bead Eyes: Just look at the cover.
  • Character Title: Grandpa Gray.
  • Feghoot: After being told that Grandpa Gray isn't gray we get this.
No, nothing about Grandpa Gray is gray, except his hair.
  • Fun Personified: Grandpa Gray is stated to carry a big brown bag full of surprises and does tricks for people.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: It's noted that Grandpa Gray's bright blue eyes twinkle when he laughs.
  • Irony: Only Grandpa Gray's hair is gray, but the illustrations show that he's balding.
  • Literal Metaphor: The phrase not Gray is meant to mean "not boring" or show that the Title Character is a very "colorful person". He does, however, literally have gray hair.
  • The All-Concealing "I": Possibly; considering the fact the protagonist's name is "Grandpa Gray" it's very likely that the narrator is his grandchild.
  • Meaningful Name: Gray is both the old man's name and the color of his hair.
