What a heartfelt way to subvert Animal Jingoism.
The book series is known for its sweet and touching moments and the Animated Adaptation Dog Man (2025) perfectly brings that to life on the big screen.- Knight and Greg sharing a fist bump before they get the bomb. It really shows how strong their friendship was before they became Dog Man.
- When Knight finds out there’s a bomb, he asks Chief to get everyone out of the building. Granted, the warehouse was abandoned (and even called as such) but the thought was sweet.
- After Officer Knight and Greg get injured by the bomb, Knight puts his hand on Greg's head to comfort him. And when Nurse Lady suggests they sew Greg's head on Knight's body, he gives a thumbs up, indicating that he cares so much about his dog that either he's willing to die so Greg can have his body or he's willing to share a body with his dog.
- During his introductory scene, watching Dog Man playing piano for the elderly is pretty sweet.
- Dog Man is very dedicated in finding Petey, even potentially doing an all nighter, but when he sees Li'l Petey abandoned and nearly hit by a truck, he drops everything and takes Li'l Petey home. He would then spend the entire day with him having fun and doing some work together, with Li'l Petey loving every minute of it, especially playing piano with him. It doesn't take long for Dog Man to come to love Li'l Petey as much as Li'l Petey loves him.
- When Flippy is about to drop Petey to his death in a volcano at the climax but is confronted by Dog Man, Li'l Petey and Chief, he reveals that he had a miserable life, and Li'l Petey thinks all he needs is a friend. Li'l Petey then gives Flippy a short comic with the two of them like he did with Petey and Dog Man earlier, which brings him to tears. After Petey is saved and their attempt to arrest Flippy is unsuccessful because of his tiny arms, Flippy is ready to atone.
- Dog Man not only makes an effort to attempt to resuscitate Petey via licking him during the building rampage even though he had been tormented by the cat throughout his life, but he later gives up the tennis ball Knight gave him when he was just Greg to save Petey from falling into a volcano. He then carefully catches Petey when he comes down the volcano.
- When Petey is pardoned, Dog Man and the others cheer for him and call him a “do-gooder” because he actively proved himself to be good despite Petey disagreeing. Petey then gently holds Li’l Petey’s hand to walk home.
- Earlier in the movie, Petey orders an undo button so that he can undo Li'l Petey after he realized his clone starts off as a child whom he has to raise, but around the end of the movie, when he finally gets the undo button after having bonded with his clone/son, he tosses it away as he no longer wants to erase him.
- After Grampa runs off with all their stuff save for the comic books Li'l Petey made, Li'l Petey finally breaks and starts seeing the things they pass in the same way Petey had earlier. Petey immediately sits down and hugs him while looking for something to lift his spirits. He points out how beautiful the night sky is and as they look at the stars together, it seems to not only reaffirm Li'l Petey's faith in the beauty of the world, but Petey's as well:Petey: You wanna know something, kid?
Li'l Petey: What, Papa?
Petey: This world has a lot of problems, but it can never be a horrible place 'cause you're in it.- Then, after leaving Li'l Petey with Dog Man (and gifting Dog Man a new tennis ball), Petey goes back and cleans up some of the things he'd earlier only pointed out as proof of how terrible the world is; picking a dandelion and putting it in a bottle he fished out of the river.
- Petey, having come to understand Dog Man and Li'l Petey's friendship, decides to allow Li'l Petey to stay with Dog Man from time to time.
