- Given the film's gay subtext, maybe there's another reason crazy Aunt Martha forced Peter to be Angela besides desperately wanting a daughter. It's possible that Martha harbored homophobic views because her brother John, Peter's dad, was gay. Maybe Martha feared Peter would share John's gay traits and corrupt her precious Ricky, so she didn't want to take any chances, even if it meant forcing her traumatized orphaned nephew to assume his dead twin sister's identity.
