Vlog (Film)

Vlog is a 2008 horror film written and directed by Joshua Butler, and starring Brooke Marks, Denyce Lawton and Skyler Caleb.

Millions watched in horror as popular and sexy 'vlogger' Brooke Marks was murdered on-camera during one of her live webcasts. Her body was never found. But what happened in the weeks before might be the most depraved crime of all. These are the days and nights leading up to Brooke's brutal death: her casual hook-ups with various guys, cruel insults by another woman and, perhaps most gruesome, the faceless cyber-stalker who forced Brooke to watch as those closest to her were systematically tortured, slaughtered, and defiled.

Tropes used in Vlog include:

  • Cute and Psycho: Brooke Marks is revealed to be one.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Brooke murders three people in gruesome ways for very petty reasons:
    • Murders Tony by dismembering him while still alive, then incinerates his body parts, due to taking calls during their date and having a 5-o'clock shadow that discomforts her during sex.
    • Kills Brandon through electrocution, and disposes of his corpse by dissolving his body in hydrochloric acid, because he does not brushes his teeth in the morning, cries a lot (including during sex), takes long baths, plays with two rubber ducks while bathing and calls her many times to talk about what said rubber ducks feel or did.
    • Assassinates Carolina by putting a paste of binary explosive (composed of ammonium nitrate and nitromethane) into her bong that, when she used it, left her upper body as Ludicrous Gibs because she shamed her in public for her sexual encounters she posts in her vlog.
  • Electrified Bathtub: The killer murders Brandon by rigging a light fitting to fall into his bathtub when he reaches for one of his rubber ducks.
  • Evil Is Petty: See Disproportionate Retribution above.
  • Frame-Up: Brooke frames her boyfriend Billy for the murder of her friend Jasmine (that she committed) because she believed he was cheating on her with the latter.
  • G.I.R.L.: Discussed. Brooke says that anytime you see a hot image of a girl claiming to be a lesbian, it is really a guy. She relates a time when someone posted "You make my pussy so wet!" in response to one of her posts, but had logged in using the wrong account, with his profile showing him to be 45 year old man from Texas named Frank.
  • Hollywood Acid: The killer disposes of Brandon's body by dissolving his body in hydrochloric acid in his bathtub.
  • I Have Boobs, You Must Obey!: Brooke conducts an experiment to see if she can snare a man solely through the power of cleavage. She succeeds, commenting that she could stay in the restroom for 20 minutes and Brandon will still be waiting when she comes out.
  • In Touch with His Feminine Side: Brandon likes to take baths, play with two rubber ducks during said baths and cries a lot. These are the three of the four reasons why Brooke breaks up with him and later murders him.
  • Lingerie Scene: Brooke makes all of her vlog posts in her underwear. She claims this is to grab people's attention until they realise what she is saying is interesting.
  • Ludicrous Gibs: When Carolina is killed by the explosion from her rigged bong, her blood and entrails paints all four walls of her living room.
  • murder.com: The killer creates a website where they post videos of their kills. Later Brooke's murder is captured on her vlog.
  • Slashed Throat: The killer takes an agonizingly long time to cut Tony's throat with a cleaver.
  • Slipping a Mickey: The killer drops a roofie into Tony's drink to sedate him before dragging him off to be murdered.
  • Slut-Shaming: Carolina confronts Brooke in a cafe and calls her out about her numerous sexual encounters and loudly calls her a slut several times.
  • Split Personality: In the epilogue, Brooke is revealed to have a violent male personality where she disassociates when committing the murders. Even when seeing the videos, she sees the male personality instead of herself.
  • Undercover When Alone: Brookes appears genuinely shocked when she opens the website containing the videos of her friends' murders and cries on seeing it. However, as she is the killer, she already knows what is in it and, as she is alone, she has no reason to act (In fact, she has no reason to open the site at all). Though, given that she has a Split Personality, she may be genuine in her reaction.
  • Your Makeup Is Running: Brookes cries while watching the murder.com footage of her friends' murders, causing her mascara to streak.
