The Invite is a 2026 psychological comedy-drama film directed by Olivia Wilde and written by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack. It is an English-language remake of the 2020 Spanish film The People Upstairs, of which The Invite is its fifth Foreign Remake.
In San Francisco, Joe (Seth Rogen) and Angela (Wilde) are a longtime married couple going through a rough patch: he, a former musician who now teaches at a music conservatory after his career flamed out, is feeling increasingly unhappy with the way his life has turned out, while she, an art school graduate who never really made anything of it, is fraying with neuroses about how others perceive them. With their twelve-year-old daughter away at a sleepover for the night, they decide to invite their upstairs neighbors for a dinner party at their apartment. The neighbors, Hawk (Edward Norton) and Pína (Penélope Cruz) are everything they are not: unmarried, glamorous, and free-spirited. As the night goes on, things start to go off the rails when Hawk and Pína make an unexpected proposition to their new friends.
The Invite is set to be released on June 26, 2026.
The Invite contains examples of:
- Foreign Remake: An English-language remake of a Spanish film called The People Upstairs and its fifth remake overall.
- Minimalist Cast: Rogen, Wilde, Norton, and Cruz are the only actors credited and the trailer showcases only them. Joe and Angela have a daughter, but she's away for the night.
- Painting the Medium: The trailer contains a scene where Joe outlines each person there (Pína, Hawk, Angela, and then him). As he gestures to them, their respective actors' name pops up onscreen.
