"So, you didn’t curse the entire town to forget who they are? Because it’s not the first time I’ve heard the story of an evil sorcerer creating an entire town to fuel their dark magic while they pretend to be the mayor."
— Emma Summers
These Sorts of Cases
by Crayshack is a fanfiction published as a One-Shot Fic on December 28, 2025 in Archive of Our Own. It is a crossover fanfic between Once Upon a Time (2011) and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, being an alternate take on the beginning of the former show with Buffy story as Emma's background. In this fic, when Regina finds out that her adoptive son Henry is missing, she gets a call from CPS agent Emma Summers who makes Regina go to Boston to pick Henry up and explain why Henry actually runs away.
These Sorts of Cases contains examples of:
- Adaptation Name Change: Due to being adopted by the Summers as opposed to growing up alone, Emma's full name becomes "Emma Summers" rather than "Emma Swan".
- Adaptational Badass: Here, Emma is already an experienced and powerful with magic by 2011 thanks to practicing since she was teen, as opposed to only finding out and training her power 1—2 years later as in Once Upon a Time.
- Adaptational Job Change: Emma is introduced here as a CPS agent rather than a bail bondsperson as in canon.
- Adaptational Upbringing Change: Emma got a permanent family in the Summers when she was 10 as opposed to remaining an orphan until she is an adult. Participating in Buffy's fights against vampires also means that she grows up knowing that she has magic rather becoming Agent Scully.
- Die or Fly: Emma mentions that her magic first manifested when a vampire attacked her on the night she found out that Buffy is a Vampire Slayer.
- Oh, Crap!: Regina naturally gets shocked and scared as Emma reveals that she has magic (when Regina can't use hers) and uses it to force Regina to sit down and listen. She also gulps when Emma reveals that being a Living Lie Detector is part of her magic, meaning she knows all along that Regina is lying to her.
- Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: When Regina stands up and dismisses Emma's claim that her older sister is a Vampire Slayer, Emma gets her to sit down using magic while punctuating her "Sit. Down." order.
- Was It Really Worth It?: When Emma asks Regina whether cursing an entire town is really worth getting revenge on Snow White now that she has done it, Regina can only quietly shrug.
