Green-Eyed Monster (Adventures of a Line Hopper)

Go To

Jenny: I don't know what I did wrong. One moment… she was fine. Brilliant and fascinating and… my sister. Someone I could connect with. Someone who wanted to make sure I wasn't alone. And next thing I knew…
Jack: You haven't done the family thing a lot, have you?

Green-Eyed Monster is an installment of Adventures of a Line Hopper Series Fic that crosses over Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Doctor Who, serving as the seventh entry of the third season of The Child of Balime,. This fic specifically crosses over post-canon Buffy with Torchwood (between season 2 and 3) and "The Doctor's Daughter". It consists of 8 chapters published from February 15 to February 28, 2014, preceded by The Totos and the Vanguard and followed by Butterflies.

Immediately following up the previous fic, Seo brings her newfound sister Jenny to meet her family at Torchwood, only to find out that, as much as Jenny is jealous of the fact that Seo has people caring for her, Seo is jealous of how competent Jenny is. Jenny also figures out that Buffy has been dying for a while and makes sure that Buffy is not going to keep it a secret anymore.

Green-Eyed Monster contains examples of:

  • Call-Forward: After saving Ianto, Seo admits that when she looks into the Time Vortex, she feels like having control over everything and being able to save everyone, the A God Am I mindset of her future tenth incarnation.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Upon finding out that Jenny is the Doctor's daughter, Buffy asks whether her mother is mistress to the king of France.
    • It's mentioned that Martha marries Tom, gets divorced, and then marries Mickey. Buffy also can't remember Mickey's name again and misnames him "Ricky" like the Doctor sometimes does, before commenting how she used to live with his ex Rose (The Bringer of Death) and that Rose-as-Bad-Wolf created Seo's adoptive dad (Your Nature).
    • When explaining about siblings to Jenny, Jack assures her that Seo at least won't bury her alive for two-thousand years, referring to what his brother Gray do to him.
  • Didn't Think This Through: A typical trait of Seo. One of her rants about Jenny is about how unlike Seo, Jenny actually thinks things through before doing them. Jack points out that she just impulsively decides to share her family with Jenny, only realizing that she would get jealous of having to share after the jealousy happens.
  • Fantastically Indifferent: Being a time-traveling alien, Jenny is outright unimpressed upon seeing Torchwood's base for the first time, when Gwen is expecting the usual awe.
  • Finger-Forced Smile: When denying that she is upset about Jenny revealing that she doesn't know how her own ship actually works, Seo spreads her already-forced smile with her hands.
  • Immediate Sequel: Takes place immediately after The Totos and the Vanguard.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Jenny realizes that she is completely out of her depth at socializing, especially with someone with issues like Seo.
    • Jenny talking about how impressive Seo's ship is, actually needing only Seo and the TARDIS coral which means only its owner can drive it, with the machinery part being unfunctional. As much as she tries to hide it with a smile, it's obvious Seo is hurt that the part she built herself is the part that doesn't work. Jenny goes on to praise various "features" that Oliver has, while Seo is forcing herself to smile as they were actually bugs.
    • Later, while explaining how primitive Torchwood's technology is, Jenny slips and says even a thick person know how to use it right, which outright upsets Seo since she is still sad about the death of its engineer and her friend Tosh.
    • When Seo comments that she isn't made perfectly, Jenny assumes that it's because she is part-human which causes Seo to blow up about how she loves her human family.
    • Jenny instinctually tries to run away upon sensing Jack is nearby and brings Seo along, but Seo takes it as her trying to show off her full Time Lord instinct that Seo doesn't have.
    • When Jack wants to Seo to make up for destroying a device he needs and Seo says she doesn't know how to repair it, Jenny accidentally causes her to snap by offering to repair it herself.
  • Internal Reveal: Jack and Seo find out about Buffy's illness from Jenny who figures it out on her own based on Alison and Buffy's behaviors.
  • Jaw Drop: After Seo clarifies that Jenny is not another Buffy's daughter but the Doctor's, Buffy goes from somewhat confused to doing a take with her jaw dropped.
  • Neck Snap: Jenny kills a weevil that Buffy is fighting by snapping its neck.
  • OOC Is Serious Business: Gwen and Alison realize that the pacifistic Seo is seriously jealous of Jenny when she starts claiming that she can make their guns work better (after Jenny shows her knowledge and proficiency with guns).
  • Obviously Not Fine: Seo spends the early parts of the fic insisting she's fine while everybody can tell that she is upset about being upstaged by Jenny.
  • Percussive Therapy: When she goes to check on the obviously upset Seo, Jenny finds her destroying some alien tech to let out her frustration.
Jenny: I hope that's not what you want to do to me.
  • Previously on…: Starts with a short "Previously, in the Child of Balime" that repeats the last scene of the previous fic.
  • Repeat It Until You Believe It: At one point, Seo's Obviously Not Fine devolves into her just shouting "Happy!" repeatedly.
  • Verbal Backspace: When Jenny justifies killing a weevil, Buffy just shrugs and agrees until she remembers that Seo is there.
Buffy: Well, it's what I would do. I mean, that's… wrong. Definitely wrong. You're absolutely right, Seo, to want to help out.
  • "You!" Exclamation: Buffy shouts "You!" in anger upon encountering Ethan Rayne yet again.
