"A different Caster, a different redhead, and maybe a different Fourth Holy Grail War"
—Official summary of the work.
Fate/bleached white
is a fanfic by Shade Penn, and is a Crossover between Bleach and Fate/Zero.
Before the events of Bleach, Ichigo Kurosaki gets sent to Fuyuki, where he's left on the doorstep of Kayneth El-Melloi to be both his student in magecraft and his adopted son. Neither of them are happy about this, and it only changes things from there as he's pulled into the Fourth Holy Grail War when he has a chance encounter with a masterless Servant.
Fate/bleached white contains examples of:
- Abandonment-Induced Animosity: Granted, Ichigo already had problems with Isshin, but essentially being spirited away and left to fend for himself in a completely different city really didn't help, especially as Ichigo believed his father already had some idea about what would happen.
- Abomination Accusation Attack: Implied with Kirei accusing Team Berserker of harming Ichigo or worse. While it goes over Ichigo's head, it does not with Lancer.
- Adaptational Intelligence: Waver, who didn't know how to speak Japanese in the originally, reveals he actually learned enough of the basics to hold a conversation.
- Berserker, who in the original could only speak in growls, can only still speak in growls, but his thoughts are coherent. Kariya suspects the reason is because Berserker's madness twisted itself into something intelligible for Ichigo's sake.
- Adopt-a-Prodigy: Because the actual reason for the adoption is unknown to Kayneth or Ichigo, the former speculates this might be why his family jumped on the chance to foist Ichigo onto him, and the display of raw power in Ichigo's prana only reinforces this.
- Adoptive Peer Parent: This is the part of the reason Kayneth is so pissed about the adoption situation with Ichigo. He does admit things would have been fine had his family let them just be teacher and student, but sees taking it one step further when the age-gap is so small to be restrictive and forcing him into a role he wasn't prepared for. Ironically, Ichigo also thought them being simply teacher and student would have been fine.
- Admiring the Abomination: Disturbingly, Ryuunosuke bears no ill-will towards Caster for killing him. Instead, he thought it was cool she drained his blood, and wanted to become a 'demon' like her too.
- Affectionate Gesture to the Head: After affirming their brotherly relationship, Lancer playfully ruffles Ichigo's hair.
- Berserker also ruffles Ichigo's hair, but the latter is too annoyed by the situation to find it endearing. He later does it again, and Ichigo is more receptive the second time around.
- Ichigo ruffles Shirou's hair several times in order to comfort him after a Hollow attack.
- An Arm and a Leg: During a Hollow attack, Lancer throws his spear and cuts one of its arms clean off.
- An Offer You Can't Refuse: When Kayneth and Tohsaka meet for their Servants' duel, the latter offers to let Kayneth live if he commands Caster to kill herself. Of course, Tokiomi knows that Kayneth can't do this, and Kayneth is wholly dismissive of it, seeing the offer as more the other magus' attempt to distract him.
- Anger Born of Worry: Ichigo's response to worrying about someone is to get angry when they do something he finds dumb, such as Kariya refusing to take care of himself.
- Anti-Hero: Caster. She explains the word has a different meaning to the Grail, rather than the actual definition; she also explains it means she shouldn't have been summoned, but theorizes it's due to her former Master being a monster.
- Asshole Victim: Ryuunosuke. Upon summoning Caster, he is immediately killed by her. And it happens again after he becomes a Hollow.
- Awesome, but Impractical: Summoning a Berserker is viewed as this; Ichigo wonders why someone would choose a Servant with a built-in self-destruct function, but Lancer explains good control and strong enough prana would help circumvent it.
- Because You Were Nice to Me: A masterless Caster collapsed in an alleyway, on the brink of disappearing, was found by Ichigo. His sincerity touched her, and she followed him back to the hotel he was staying at to make sure he was safe. It saved Ichigo's life when Kayneth tried to get rid of him.
- Belligerent Sexual Tension: Discussed by Lancer and Ichigo about why Kirei keeps trying to provoke Lancer. The Servant laughs it off, making Ichigo note that by his logic Caster would like him too given she equally despises him.
- Benevolent Boss: In contrast to Kayneth's Bad Boss, Ichigo is this to Lancer and Caster, treating them both with respect while Kayneth just sees them as tools to be used and discarded.
- Big Brother Mentor: Somewhere between this and a Cool Big Bro is Lancer for Ichigo, helped greatly by how well they're able to get along.
- Big Damn Hug: When Caster relays her reasons for having killed her first master, and what happened to her children, it leaves Ichigo so emotionally charged that he hugs her, surprising both of them.
- After Ichigo reveals that Rin got attacked by a Hollow and he saved her, Kariya hugs him out of gratitude.
- Bitch Slap: Kayneth does this to Ichigo twice in a heated moment; once at the dock fight as Ichigo mocks him, and another during their magecraft lesson when Ichigo's questions hit too close (though Lancer ended up taking the hit instead with the latter case).
- Broken Tears: Kariya breaks down sobbing when the Fake!Aoi chews him out for being selfish and blaming him for Sakura getting taken away.
- Bullying a Dragon: Kayneth mocks both Lancer and Caster regularly, seeing them as only tools. While Kayneth won't face repercussions from Lancer other than gentle rebuttals due to Lancer's actual loyalty to him, there is no such excuse for his treatment towards Caster. Especially egregious given she already tortured him.
- Lancer offers this as a reason for Kirei trying to provoke him whenever they meet, thinking the man just wants to fight a Servant.
- Burger Fool: Downplayed, as while working a restaurant busboy wasn't Ichigo's first choice, he also doesn't seem to mind it too much, and the necessity of getting a job quick outweighed any misgivings.
- But Not Too Foreign: Ichigo (and by extensions his sisters) is made to be one-quarter French (implied by when he talks about Masaki telling him stories of Charlemagne and his Paladins).
- Can't Kill You, Still Need You: Caster towards Kayneth, admitting if only to herself she'd rather kill him but doesn't because it'll cause Lancer to disappear.
- Berserker seems to swing between this and wanting to kill Kariya so he can have Ichigo as his Master instead, but Kariya pointing out Ichigo won't do it if he kills him and Lancer stays his hand.
- Cast from Hit Points: The combined weight of the Crest Worms and Berserker's high mana up keep did a number on Kariya before the Crest Worms got removed and Ichigo shoulders the brunt of Berserker's mana cost.
- Cast from Stamina: Ichigo grows sluggish and light-headed after excessive prana is taken from him, as shown with his first encounter with Caster, and Berserker's first and subsequent consumption of it.
- Chronic Hero Syndrome: Ichigo. Rushed to Caster when she collapsed, didn't hesitate to save Waver from some thugs, and saved both Shirou and Rin when they were attacked by Hollows.
- Clingy Jealous Girl: Sola-Ui towards Lancer.
- Close to Home: When Kariya explains Sakura's situation to him, Ichigo realizes the 'given up for adoption without a thought' hits very close to his current predicament. Interestingly, Ichigo decides to hold off judgement about Tokiomi until he sees what the man's actually like for himself.
- Condescending Compassion: Tokiomi sees Ichigo as nothing but an interloper and views him as a nameless orphan, but sees it as a great source of his own magnanimity to spare Ichigo after he saves Rin from a Hollow.
- Confound Them with Kindness: Ichigo is not this, but Caster had warned him the other Masters would perceive him as such. It's shown to be how Waver and Kariya viewed him, with the former thinking Ichigo's just nice to get his guard down, while the latter thinks Ichigo's a Manipulative Bastard.
- Contrived Coincidence: Ryuunosuke's summoning of Caster, even more so than canon. He happens to spot a page from Greek mythology, and unwittingly uses it as a catalyst.
- Crazy Jealous Guy: Kayneth. He puts all the blame for Sola-Ui's Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane attraction to Lancer onto him, despite Lancer being uncomfortable with her attention.
- Cross-Popping Veins: Ichigo notes Kayneth has a vein bulging in his forehead when he's angry, mostly at him.
- Crystal Ball: Caster uses one to survey areas and keep track of Ichigo at work. There's a limitation to it, because she needs to know where to look.
- Deceased Parents Are the Best: How Ichigo views his Missing Mom, to the point where once it's explained every Master gets a wish if they win the grail, he immediately wants to use his to resurrect her.
- Declaration of Protection: Which ties in with Protectorate, as Lancer swears to keep Ichigo safe because he's Kayneth's (sort of) adopted son.
- Deliberate Values Dissonance: Lancer being aghast in front of Kayneth acting as a Resentful Guardian to Ichigo is because Ancient Irish culture viewed fostering a child as a great honour, and neglecting your ward was just as bad as neglecting your blood kid.
- Did I Just Say That Out Loud?: When Kariya decides to open up, he's so wrapped up in his own thoughts he just assumed Berserker was replying, and he's immensely horrified when said servant informs him that he'd actually been saying it out loud to Lancer, who thought Kariya was continuing an earlier conversation.
- Didn't Think This Through: The main issue with Kariya's determination to save Sakura and keep Ichigo out of Zouken's grasp is that he had no real plan to make his goal a reality. Caster and Berserker didn't hesitate to call him out on that.
- Dirty Coward: Despite Kayneth having his full power, during the dock fight he keeps out of sight and uses Ichigo as a decoy master for Lancer. This behavior gets several Cowardice Callout, but he refuses to listen.
- Disproportionate Retribution: Ichigo once mouthed off to Kayneth. Kayneth retaliated by making Ichigo pay rent for the foreseeable future.
- Does Not Like Magic: Kariya makes it clear he despises magecraft, and he's only in the war to save Sakura.
- Does Not Like Men: With Ichigo being the only exception, Caster is this, and she especially despises Lancer with Kayneth a close second.
- Dogged Nice Guy: Kariya. He loved Aoi since childhood, and though he genuinely wants to save Sakura, he also believes this will make Aoi love him back – or rather, love him in the way he wants, not the Like Brother and Sister way Caster mocked him over.
- Don't Call Me "Sir": Once Ichigo becomes a Master, right off the bat he insists Caster call him by his name, and does the same when Lancer is pretending to be his Servant.
- Don't You Dare Pity Me!: During their second meeting, Ichigo insistently tries to get Kariya to look after himself, but the man has none of it, believing its just pity. It's only when Ichigo has to play the Equivalent Exchange card about repaying a debt to Kariya does the man accept his help.
- Dramatic Irony: Both Waver and Kariya make comments at different points about how they wish their unruly Servants were more like Ichigo's Lancer, who in reality isn't his Servant at all.
- When Kayneth gets challenged by Tokiomi to a duel between their Servants, Kayneth smugly notes that Caster is the oldest Servant, and thus the strongest. He is wrong, obviously.
- Dreaming of Times Gone By: Par for the course, the Masters are shown to dream about their Servant's past lives, with really Ichigo being the only one who doesn't understand what they are, unsurprisingly.
- Drives Like Crazy: Irisviel, which Ichigo learns first hand.
- Even Evil Has Standards: Caster, a self-admitted villain, was summoned by a serial killer who offered up a boy for her to eat. So disgusted, she killed him on the spot and freed the child. She's also rather disgusted by Sakura's situation, and needs very little convincing to help save her.
- Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": The Servants are all called by their classes, and it can be counted on one hand the number of times a True Name is dropped.
- Entertainingly Wrong: When Ichigo starts to have a Freak Out over the Hollows being people, Lancer tries to calm him down by stating that given Ryuunosuke was an evil human, it was simply his nature which corrupted him into a Hollow to reflect his actions in life. This is not quite how it goes.
- Exact Words: Caster promises Ichigo she won't lay a finger on Kariya, so she gets around it by mentally torturing him to get the information she wants out of him.
- Kirei's promise to heal Rin is exactly that, as he leaves her in a cab to keep following Ichigo and Lancer.
- Fair-Weather Mentor: Kayneth is this for Ichigo; while he does take teaching Ichigo seriously, it's still not up to his best. Kayneth despises their situation, and only teaches Ichigo theory and nothing practical to protect himself, and at times puts Ichigo into dangerous situations to purposefully get him killed.
- Five-Second Foreshadowing: Kayneth scoffs at Ichigo being able to actually do anything with his prana, only to be proven wrong immediately after when Ichigo gives off an unintentionally powerful blast of mana.
- Flipping the Bird: Due to not being able to speak properly, Berserker picked this up and flips off Lancer for insulting him. While Ichigo is amused, Lancer is not.
- Food Slap: Lancer tosses a glass full of water onto Kirei, who, as he'd been eating incredible spicy mapo tofu, starts to steam.
- Forced from Their Home: Ichigo, as he barely had the chance to say goodbye to his sisters before he was being carted off by Urahara to Fuyuki. Ichigo also explains that Isshin won't let him come back because he wants him to learn some 'hard life lessons'.
- The Force Is Strong with This One: Due to not having the Stat-O-Vision Masters have, Ichigo's spiritual awareness functions as a sort of sensor. He feels Berserker's Killing Intent before he notices him, and the same with the Hollows. He's even able to sense Servants and their weapons, as when Lancer shows him one of his spears, and senses Archer's presence to avoid him.
- For Halloween, I Am Going as Myself: When Ichigo first meets Caster, he mistakes her for a cosplayer. This is used again when she goes without her hood but still keeps her pointy ears.
- Subverted when Ichigo says Berserker can go without his armour, but Lancer shoots it down, explaining even without the armour Berserker is still off and it wouldn't fool anyone.
- Friend to All Children: Ichigo. Not counting being a Promotion to Parent for his sisters, Ichigo keeps his cool and manages to stay in control when he saves Shirou and Rin on separate occasions from a Hollow, acting gentle and comforting afterwards to keep them from freaking out. It's reciprocated, as Shirou immediately takes to calling him 'big brother.'
- Gas Leak Cover-Up: Par for the course, the church covers up any oddities related to the Holy Grail War. Such as when Ichigo and Saber save Shirou and his mother from a Hollow. And Caster's summoning is passed off as a 'ritualistic killing,' with the only survivor being convinced it was a case of Mistaken for Bad Vision.
- Green-Eyed Monster: Kariya towards Tokiomi, viewing the man as having everything he's ever wanted, and not appreciating it and thinking he'd be better than him. This behavior does get called out a few times by Caster, Berserker and Lancer.
- Hate at First Sight: Lancer towards Caster and Kirei. He sees Caster as someone willing to betray them as she's already done that to her first Master, and Kirei because he finds him unsettling (though Lancer does concede he's acting Improperly Paranoid).
- Healing Hands: Kirei, which comes in handy when Aoi takes Ichigo to the church than a hospital after he's injured by a Hollow.
- Henpecked Husband: Downplayed with Kayneth towards Sola-Ui. He's aware she's not happy with the arranged marriage, and acquiesces to most of her demands and takes her snide remarks without much complaint. Lancer is the sole area where Kayneth puts his foot down.
- Heroic Self-Deprecation: Ichigo's rather self-aware assessment of himself as being 'too trusting' and a 'reckless idiot'.
- Hug and Comment: Lancer hugs Ichigo to keep him from throttling Kayneth, and asks him not to retaliate. Ichigo begrudgingly agrees.
- Human Resources: In canon, Servants could consume human souls and blood to sustain themselves. That is still the case here, as it's implied the reason Caster lasted as long as she did after killing Ryuunosuke was due to drinking his blood.
- And after Hollowfied Ryuunosuke is turned back into a normal spirit, Lancer eats him.
- Hypocrite: Several examples include:
- Hypocrisy Nod: Caster calls her former master evil, but then admits it's rich coming from her as she calls herself evil.
- Kayneth calling Tokiomi a coward for hiding in his fortified mansion, while it's mentioned Kayneth has yet to even leave the hotel he's in since the fight at the docks.
- Caster thinks Lancer's disdain for her to be a case of this, as she throws back he did the exact same thing in life.
- When Waver learns Ichigo is Kayneth's adopted son, he breaks into laughter and rants about how much of a hypocrite Kayneth is given how much emphasis he put on family lineage.
- I Kiss Your Hand: Not quite a kiss, but Saber presses her forehead to the back of Irisviel's hand when promising to get her back to Illya when the Holy Grail War is over – completely unaware this is impossible.
- I Know You Know I Know: Tokiomi, Risei and Kirei all learn that Caster is Ichigo's actual Servant, and that Lancer is Kayneth's, but can't let them know they know. Meanwhile, Teams Caster and Lancer learned that Assassin is still alive and that it meant the attack on Tohsaka manor was staged – they also can't let the other side know they know.Ichigo: Wait, why are you on my case if they already know we know?Kayneth: They don't know! The challenge was for Archer and Caster to fight. Clearly, they don't know we know.Ichigo: (thoughts) This is getting ridiculous.
- Immaturity Insult: Zig-Zagged. While most regard Ichigo's participation in the Holy Grail War to be absurd, it's more out of concern for his safety. And even when Kirei uses Ichigo's age as a taunt, the insult is directed towards Lancer than Ichigo, likening the Servant to a babysitter than a bodyguard. The only ones who do hold Ichigo's against him are Kayneth (as he constantly refers to Ichigo as a 'boy' derisively), and Tokiomi (who feels Ichigo only sees the war as a game).
- Impossibly Tacky Clothes: Deliberately invoked. Sola-Ui gives Lancer clothing meant to be loud and tacky, with the explanation being to take attention from his face. Ichigo thinks he got dressed in the dark, and Kirei wonders if Lancer hates wearing the clothes.
- Improperly Paranoid: Lancer, due to the change in circumstances. As he's acting as Ichigo's Servant, he's paranoid about damn near everyone as he's extremely cautious over Ichigo's safety.
- I'm Standing Right Here: Kayneth is not shy about insulting his servant when he's around, who only puts up with it because of his loyalty. Sola-Ui also insults Ichigo, but the latter is just annoyed she's using it to guilt trip Lancer.
- Inadequate Inheritor: Kayneth views Ichigo as this, and given the rest of his family pushed the adoption, he can't exactly get out of it by vetoing the decision.
- I Need a Freaking Drink: Tokiomi is not good at improvising, and Ichigo's continued interference causes him to drink excessively whenever he's talking about Ichigo's activities.
- I See Dead People: Ichigo's ability to see ghosts remains, and because Servants are spirits, he can see them even if they're invisible, which leads to an Oh, Crap! when he notices Lancer in said state.Lancer: You can see me?
- Jerkass: Kayneth. With the exception of Sola-Ui, he sees everyone as beneath him, treats Lancer and Caster poorly as he views them as tools and not people. Wholly arrogant of his own talent and pedigree. Can't Take Criticism as he struck at Ichigo twice for getting under his skin (and tries to get him killed), and sneers at both Lancer's honor, and when the latter attempts to With Due Respect him into seeing Ichigo as his son proper.
- Karmic Jackpot: When Ichigo saves Caster from fading away without hesitation, he gets a servant who is incredibly skilled in Magecraft from the Age of the Gods and is highly protective of him.
- Lady and Knight: Saber and Irisviel.
- It's subverted with Lancer and Kayneth, but played straighter with Lancer and Ichigo, given they are also pretending to be Servant and Master; Lancer protects Ichigo fiercely, and admires his determination and bravery even when finding it foolish, and Ichigo treats Lancer as a person and in turn defends him.
- The Lady's Favour: Before Saber and Lancer's duel, both Irisviel and Ichigo give the Servants a 'token' to humour them.
- Light Liege, Dark Defender: Berserker does not have this with his actual Master, but rather with his Morality Chain Ichigo.
- Like a Son to Me: How Caster views Ichigo; she's rather protective of him, and does everything to ensure he stays safe, and any time he's hurt she's upset or gets angry over it, and it all culminates in her slipping and calling him her son outright.
- Berserker admits outright he only saw Ichigo as his Galahad stand-in at first, but eventually came to see Ichigo as this properly after spending so much time together.
- Despite being told explicitly by Urahara to treat Ichigo as a son, Kayneth is a Resentful Guardian instead.
- Living Battery: All the Masters with their Servants, but special note is given to Ichigo, who explicitly offers to be this and front load the cost of prana Berserker needs to ease the strain it put on Kariya due to his excessive spiritual energy.
- Living Emotional Crutch: Ichigo for Caster and Berserker; it's shown how both are when he's not around, and it's not pretty. And both are very protective of him, with Caster torturing Kayneth for striking Ichigo, and Berserker kidnapping him to get him away from the danger.
- Locked Out of the Loop: The reason behind Ichigo's 'adoption'. He certainly doesn't know why he got taken away from his family, and is incredulous to find out even Kayneth doesn't know, who justifies it by saying the El-Mellois weren't going to tell him over the phone.
- It's revealed Kirei never told Tokiomi about Ichigo and Kariya's alliance, because he wanted to see how it played out. And when called out on it, Kirei dismisses it, saying it wasn’t important.
- Magical Accessory: Lancer's iolite necklace, which Caster made for him to enhance his spiritual perception to see the Hollows so he'd protect Ichigo better.
- Magic Antidote: The potion Caster makes to take care of Kariya's worm problem. It doesn't fix the damage done, but does ease the pain of it.
- Malicious Misnaming: Though Kayneth only seems to call Ichigo 'boy', the latter suspects Kayneth won't say his name right out of spite, and the one-time Kayneth does say it on page, he deliberately calls him 'Itchygo'.
- Manipulative Bastard: Caster. One example is how she gets Kayneth to properly take Ichigo's training seriously by first taunting him about the fact he wants Ichigo dead, and then striking by claiming to be a better teacher than him. Kayneth falls right into it.
- Men Can't Keep House: Both subverted and inverted. Ichigo explains he took over his mother's role as his family's homemaker after her death, while Sola-Ui admits she has no interest for any such homemaking.
- Mind Rape: Caster does this twice; once in retaliation for Kayneth striking Ichigo to torture him mentally, and the second to wear down Kariya enough that he gives her a straight answer about why he thought of betraying Ichigo to Zouken.
- Mirthless Laughter: Waver breaks into an almost hysterical laugh when he finds out Ichigo is Kayneth's (sort of) adopted son, believing it to be a sign of the man's hypocrisy.
- Lancer lets out an incredulous laugh when Ichigo brings up the possibility of Kirei's continued provocation to be due to a crush.
- Mistaken for Related: Humorously, while Rin scoffs at Shirou believing that Lancer is Ichigo's brother, she assumes Shirou and Ichigo are related due to Ichigo walking Shirou to the bus stop, and it's not helped with Shirou naively going along with it.
- Morality Chain: Ichigo is this for Caster. Despite the initial presentation that she's had Adaptational Heroism, it becomes very clear she's still vicious and willing to torture people, even at one point thinking to herself that if the Grail could let Ichigo remain with her without a Time Paradox occurring, she'd kill everyone in the war and hand him the Grail herself.
- Murder Is the Best Solution: Caster, both in her Love Makes You Crazy flashbacks, and her current self is very much in favour of this, and even when she's restricted by circumstance, she is still readily willing to torture people.
- My Master, Right or Wrong: Lancer toward Kayneth, which the former is not unaware of, as when Ichigo points out Lancer's desire to serve a worthy lord is hampered by Kayneth's horrible attitude, Lancer calls it a test of his character.
- My Secret Pregnancy: When Saber's Marriage of Convenience is brought up, she reveals she bore three children but kept it hidden by claiming they were Guinevere's and making sure neither of them were in Camelot to avoid anyone from questioning why the latter didn't look pregnant.
- The Nicknamer: Ichigo has a habit of giving out nicknames when he meets people and doesn't get their names; he seems to go by a prominent trait, as he calls Irisviel 'Lady', Aoi 'Mother', Kariya 'Blondie', and Lancer 'Sir Knight.'
- Obeying Under Protest: Ichigo is furious after Lancer takes a slap from Kayneth meant for him, but begrudgingly doesn't retaliate when Lancer asks him not to. Ichigo still makes it clear he won't tolerate Kayneth doing it again.
- Obviously Not Fine: Ichigo's default response to pain is to smile, both of the emotional and physical variety. Lancer (and perhaps Caster) is the only one who sees through it, but respects his privacy not to pry.
- Private Tutor: What Kayneth's original role had been for Ichigo, and to his (very limited) credit, he still teaches him like he's supposed too – even if it's just theory and not actual magecraft.
- Promotion to Parent: Part of the canon divergence is in Ichigo being born earlier, where there ends up being a larger age gap between him and his sisters. As such, he took to taking over their mother's role in their lives out of guilt for blaming himself for Masaki's death.Ichigo: I had to take care of my sisters at home. My mom…she wasn't around anymore, and my father was a mess – there really wasn't anyone else there to step up.
- Protective Charm: Ichigo's charm necklace; Caster made it look like a traditional charm, and it's to keep Ichigo's prana hidden so no one realizes his decoy servant isn't proportionally strong to match his mana output.
- Psychological Projection: Kayneth brings up the fact Lancer likely sees his own fostering in Ichigo's situation as to why the Servant is so adamant about trying to get Kayneth to like Ichigo.
- It's painfully obvious from Ichigo's thoughts when he interacts with Shirou, he's clearly projecting his own Guilt Complex about his mother's death onto the boy.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: Caster's eyes turn red when angered.
- Relative-ly Flimsy Excuse: When out buying books to research the legends about Lancer and Caster, Ichigo claims Lancer is his brother. He gets a hard look from the cashier, but it is not commented on.
- When Shirou runs into Ichigo and Lancer while they're out, the boy asks who Lancer is. Ichigo says Lancer is his older brother, and Shirou rather bluntly says they don't look alike.
- Replacement Goldfish: Ichigo for Berserker's son, which Kariya even calls him out on.
- Resentful Guardian: Kayneth towards Ichigo in spades. While both of them were completely blindsided by the news, Kayneth immediately despised Ichigo for it and took out his resentment on him in both petty and major ways. Sola-Ui also resents Ichigo, but to a lesser extent.
- Rhetorical Request Blunder: After Ichigo buys a book about Arthurian legend that he mistakenly thought Berserker wanted, Kariya sees it and rhetorically asks his servant if he's going to reveal his identity. Kariya immediately backpedals when Berserker eagerly starts to do just that. Luckily (for Kariya), Ichigo stops Berserker and says he can figure it out on his own, and doesn't need to be told.
- Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Ichigo goes in defiance of the rules set in place during the Holy Grail War, and he doesn't hesitate at any point to try and save someone affected by the 'mage secrecy' that everyone else adheres to ignore.
- Secretly Selfish: Kariya's desire to save Sakura is genuine, but equally strong are his desire for Aoi, and to kill Tokiomi. Lancer, Caster, and Berserker all view him in contempt because of this.
- See the Invisible: When dealing with a Hollow who has him pinned down, Ichigo smashes a soda can against its mask. This lets its outline be visible to Lancer, Rin and Aoi – and more importantly, to let Lancer see where he needs to strike.
- Simple Solution Won't Work: Ichigo suggests Lancer just might cover his love mark to prevent his Charm Person ability from acting up, only for Lancer to admit it's plain impossible — trying to lower his sunglasses over the mole causes resistance until the accessory gets blocked.
- Something Only They Would Say: Subverted, because it's what Caster knows Ichigo would never say to her when she meets Zangetsu and he calls her an 'old hag.'
- Smug Snake: Kayneth, as per canon. Always acts with confidence and tries to put up a façade of competence and elitism.
- Snark-to-Snark Combat: Lancer and Caster, who have not so much conversations, but seemingly who can throw the better insult at the other. Ichigo compares them to oil and water. And Lancer also has very snarky 'conversations' with Kirei.
- Soul-Cutting Blade: Excalibur is able to purify a Hollow, which is explained in the Author’s Notes that in this universe, holy swords are akin to Zanpakuto.
- Spared by the Adaptation: Because the Caster here is not the canon Caster, the unfortunate child offered as a meal gets to live, albeit traumatized.
- Spit Take: Kariya does this after Berserker deliberately waits until the man drinks from his glass of water, just to mess with him.
- Stalker with a Crush: Sola-Ui towards Lancer. Having embraced the effects of his mole's curse, she's always watching him and gets noticeably irritated and jealous when Lancer is assigned to follow Ichigo around. She even insists on going with them on one of their outings, trying to keep Lancer's attention, but he is clearly uncomfortable with it.
- Stalker Without a Crush: Alongside Kirei's obsession with Kiritsugu, the former has also developed an unconscious interest in Lancer. In all their interactions, Kirei is always looking at Lancer, with the implication being from his thoughts that he wants to see Lancer's pained expressions, and goes out of his way to antagonize him to get a reaction.
- Stat-O-Vision: Masters in the Grail war can examine the statistics of their Servants and those of others. The only exceptions to this are Berserker (whose stats can't be seen), and Ichigo (because Caster chose him rather than the Grail).
- Sure, Let's Go with That: Given Ichigo has Lancer pretending to be his Servant, any time they have to refer to either their Master or Servant status, they are always deliberately vague and refuse to be direct.Kariya: Your Lancer has a high mana skill?Ichigo (hastily): Yeah, ah, my Servant is great with magic.
- Sworn Brothers: Ichigo does this with Lancer, cementing it with a fist bump, with the latter enthusiastically returning it.
- Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: By virtue of the circumstances, Teams Lancer and Caster work together. On the whole, the only ones who get along in this group are Ichigo with both Servants, but everyone else despises each other to some degree.
- Too Much Alike: Berserker and Kariya, with the tension being the implication of how similar they really are.Berserker had always thought [Kariya] a sorry, sad, pathetic waste of a human being. It was a mirror Berserker did not like looking into.
- Touch the Intangible: While both Saber and Lancer aren't able to see the Hollows they fight, they're both able to still kill them, which shocks them. And of course, there's the inverse of Hollows being able to interact with solid objects.
- Treachery Is a Special Kind of Evil: Lancer views Caster as untrustworthy both from her legend, and that she killed her previous master (granted, he doesn't know that said Master was a serial killer).
- Unaffected by Spice: Zig-Zagged with Mapo tofu. It's still as spicy as ever, as just the smell alone was enough to cause Ichigo's eyes to water the first time he encountered it. Though when Ichigo is offered some to eat, he does so and notes that it's good, yet acknowledges it's cold and so the spice is muted. Later, Ichigo is even inspired to try out Kaarage. When Kirei eats the tofu, Ichigo sees he's clearly affected by it, and the man starts to steam when Lancer throws a glass of water on him.
- Unknown Rival: Kariya absolutely hates Tokiomi, and his second goal in the war is to kill him. For his part, aside from a brief icy silence after Kirei brings Kariya up, Tokiomi literally doesn't give him a second thought.
- Amusingly, Tokiomi is also this. He views Ichigo as a thorn in his side, and doesn't understand why he got selected as a Master. Ichigo hasn't even met the man.
- Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Some of Caster's bounded fields are catered to specifically keeping people ignorant of the goings on, or getting people to leave when danger is around.
- Unwanted Rescue: After Ichigo is injured at the dock fight, Berserker flips out and rushes in to 'save' him, leaving everyone present baffled.
- Unwitting Pawn: What Lancer believes Caster's protective feelings about Ichigo really are, and thinking she's going to pull a You Have Outlived Your Usefulness on them all. Ironically, he brings up the possibility of using Berserker and Kariya as this, but Ichigo shuts it down immediately.
- Uriah Gambit: Since Kayneth isn't able to get rid of Ichigo himself (or with Lancer) since Caster would kill him, he purposefully puts Ichigo into dangerous situations, or lets Ichigo keep going into dangerous situations in the hopes it'd get him killed. Interestingly, Ichigo is well aware of this and sees it as more annoying than anything.
- Implied when Caster interrogated Kariya for information; Berserker simply ignored Kariya's distress in the hopes Caster would kill his master. When confronted about it, Berserker doesn't deny it.
- Volleying Insults: Lancer and Caster. Lancer's favored insult is 'witch' for the latter, while Caster's is 'homewrecker' and 'dog' for the former. Before things get too out of control, someone usually ends up getting them to back down.
- Would Not Hurt A Child: Caster, who killed her first Master and freed the child which had been offered to her. She even admits she has a soft spot for children, as she doesn't need much help in being convinced to save Sakura.
- Kiritsugu very much averts this, as he'd been about to pull the trigger on Ichigo before Berserker showed up and kidnapped him.
- The Hollows also do not mind harming any children they come across, seeing them as easy prey.
- You Remind Me of X: Ichigo's personality (not so much temperament) and Chronic Hero Syndrome remind Berserker of Galahad.
- Kayneth's arrogance and smug attitude reminding Caster of Jason, which causes her to think even lower of him.
