Main Animals

    Max
Characters in The Secret Life of Pets
Voiced by: Louis C.K. (first film), Patton Oswalt (second film)Foreign languages

A Jack Russell terrier, and one of the two protagonists of the movie. He is quite fun-loving but is somewhat possessive of his owner when Duke comes along.

  • Accidental Murder: He and Duke end up killing The Viper.
  • Amazon Chaser: He starts to reciprocate Gidget's feelings for him after he sees her effortlessly take down the entirety of the Flushed Pets right in front of him.
  • Bullying a Dragon: To Duke. From the very beginning, he's prone to try and push the other dog around, despite the fact that he's literally bite size to the latter. He also bullies Rooster in the sequel for his approach on parenting Liam. Rooster is unfazed by it and teases him back.
  • Character Tic: Becomes overprotective of Liam, which causes him to scratch himself whenever he feels that he's in danger. The scratching gets so bad that Katie has to get him fitted for the cone of shame.
  • City Mouse: A city dog that stays at Uncle Shep's Farm in the sequel. He find the sights, smells, and sounds of the farm overwhelming, which makes his anxiety worse. Luckily, Rooster helps him overcome his fears and adjust to the country.
  • Crush Filter: Max suddenly sees Gidget with all-new eyes when she opens a can of whoop-ass on the Flushed Pets.
  • Fat and Skinny: He's the Skinny to Duke's Fat.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: The plot is set into motion when Katie adopts Duke and brings him home. Given that his whole life virtually revolved around his owner, Max becomes bitter and suspicious of the new dog, and initially tries to get rid of him.
  • It's All About Me: Initially.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While he can be a bit egotistical, he's a nice guy once you've gotten to know him.
  • Nice, Mean, and In-Between: The (initially) prideful Mean to Gidget's Nice and Duke's In-between.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: When he tries to reunite Duke with his previous owner, it backfires spectacularly.
  • Oblivious to Love: As shown in their first interaction in the film, Max is so focused on his owner's return that he's oblivious to Gidget's overly flirtatious mannerisms.
  • Papa Wolf: Albeit reluctantly, when he notices that Cotton's missing, he joins with Rooster in rescuing the lamb.
  • Shown Their Work: Max's initial reaction to Duke is spot on for how a pet dog will react to the sudden introduction of a new animal into the family home. Especially when the new pet is considerably larger and the dog feels threatened. Pet shelters unanimously agree that the way Katie handled the situation was among the worst ways. She's lucky Max and Duke didn't wind up grievously wounding or killing each other considering she left them unattended for an extended period of time.
  • Super Not-Drowning Skills: Shows this in a few scenes, most notably in the skinking van while trying to free Duke. For such a small dog, he shows little trouble holding his breath; he can even keep up with Duke, who's a Newfoundland, a breed widely recognized as good in water.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Katie. At the beginning of the movie, he unblinkingly announces his intent to stand by the door to their apartment until she comes home.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Literally, this entire movie wouldn't have happened if he just hadn't been a dick towards Duke.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Gives one of these to Duke after he accuses Max of trying to get rid of him when trying to reunite him with his original owner (who they had just found out at the moment just died).

    Duke
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/duke_the_secret_life_of_pets_transparent_01.png
Voiced by: Eric StonestreetForeign languages

A large, brown, shaggy Newfoundland and the other protagonist of the movie. He is at first reckless and inconsiderate, but is later shown to have a sympathetic backstory.

  • Accidental Murder: He and Max end up killing The Viper.
  • Berserk Button: Anything related to Animal Control, and often cats.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's a friendly dog who wants to get along with Max and can get really angry with him if Max started to fight with him or when he assumed Max tries to get rid of him after they discovered that Duke's previous owner already passed away.
  • Big Eater: He eats his big mixing bowl of food and then Max's terrier-sized portion (although that was while he was making a power play) and an enormous amount of sausages.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His original owner, who had adopted him as a puppy, but never came for him after he was taken by Animal Control.
  • Fat and Skinny: He's the Fat to Max's Skinny.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: With Max.
  • Gentle Giant: Under normal circumstances, he's a very loving dog.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He only acts like an asshole when you've gotten on his nerves.
  • Never My Fault: He accuses Max of trying to get rid of him when he tries to reunite Duke with his original owner, only to find out he just died. However, Max isn't at fault here because he was just trying to do something nice for Duke at the moment with no ill intention and he wouldn't have tried to do that had Duke not told him about his original owner. Thankfully, Max calls him out on it.
  • Nice Guy: More outgoing than Max and willing to get along with every pets.
  • Nice, Mean, and In-Between: The loyal In-between to Gidget's Nice and Max's Mean.
  • Sad Clown: He may appear jolly, but as it turns out, his original owner died, which saddens him on the inside.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Ironically. Turns out the reason his owner didn't come for him is that said owner died, and Duke only found out when he and Max made it to the house where he used to live, and were greeted by a cat.
  • Super Not-Drowning Skills: He's a Newfoundland, so he's naturally pretty good in water. Partially subverted, because he's the one in danger of drowning in the submerged van, as he's trapped in a cage and can't swim out.
  • You Won't Like Me When I'm Angry: When Max starts grumbling about him, Duke looms over him menacingly and says that if they don't get along, it won't be pretty.
Duke: Man, are you making me angry! And when I get angry, I do this! [growls] And I don't like doing that! I need this place! And if it's gonna come down to you or me, it's gonna be ME!

    Snowball
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/snowball_the_secret_life_of_pets_4.png
Voiced by: Kevin HartForeign languages

A white rabbit. After he was abandoned by his magician owner, he went crazy, and leads a pack of other abandoned pets plotting to take revenge on humankind, deep down in the sewers.

In The Secret Life of Pets 2, he has developed a superhero complex after his new young girl owner dressed him in a superhero outfit.

Max's Search Party

    Gidget
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gidget_dog.png
Voiced by: Jenny SlateForeign languages

A white Pomeranian who has romantic feelings for Max. She leads the pets to find Max and Duke.

  • Action Girl: An adorable Action Pet who knows how to kick some animal ass.
  • Actress Allusion: This ain't the only instance where Jenny Slate has played a lively white-furred animal who came from a 2016 film.
  • Animal Stereotypes: A Pomeranian dog with a bouncy personality.
  • Badass Adorable: Max's disappearance really brings out the Determinator in her. To the point where she smacks the living tar out of Ozone for information, and clobbers ALL of the Flushed Pets when they attempt to kill Max on the Brooklyn Bridge. An advertisement for the first film even lampshades this particular side of hers by describing her as being "50% Fluff, 100% Tough".
  • Beware the Nice Ones: "I'M DONE PLAYING NICE!"
  • Big Damn Heroes: Does this twice within the first two movies in a row.
    • In the first movie, she comes to Max’s rescue and attacks the Flushed Pets with a Curb-Stomp Battle when they were cornering Max and about to attack him (not knowing he was working together with Snowball to save their friends).
    • In the sequel, she, her friends, the Crazy Cat Lady and her pet cats use the lady’s car to run Sergei over when he was about to kill Max, Hu, Snowball and Daisy, rescuing the latter four.
  • Big Sister Instinct: To Max; in fact, this is just one of the reasons why she's angered at Ozone for not giving to her and Tiberius about Max's whereabouts.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Gidget: 1, Flushed Pets: 0.
  • Cute, but Cacophonic: Courtesy of Jenny Slate, Gidget's voice can range from being squeaky to sounding crackly.
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: Gidget tends to be klutzy at times, especially whenever she feels impulsive while moving.
  • The Cutie: It's no surprise that a Pomeranian like her could be such an adorable, charming and loving lady to others.
  • Determinator: Will go through everything and anything to rescue Max and bring him home.
  • Even the Loving Hero Has Hated Ones: Ozone learns this the hard way just by provoking her for not giving to her about Max's current state at the sewers.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Although reluctant to trust Tiberius at first, she also did that out of Forgiveness for his predatory instincts, something he himself is ashamed of.
  • Excellent Judge of Character: After ramming Sergei, she identifies him as the "bad guy", which is a correct guess on her end.
  • Expressive Ears: Truth in Television, since this is a hallmark trait that can be found on any Pomeranian.
  • Fat and Skinny: The Skinnynote  to Chloe's Fat.
  • Genki Girl: She's a pretty lively and excitable Pomeranian dog herself.
  • Gleeful and Grumpy Pairing: The excitable Gleeful to Chloe's and Tiberius' Grumpy.
  • Good Cannot Comprehend Evil: She goes all berserk when Ozone pettily refuses to give her and Tiberius the current whereabouts of Max and Duke, so much so, that she even has the audacity to brutally slap him consistently to make him talk.
  • Hypocritical Humor: She bashes Tiberius for attempting to eat her as a hawk himself... when she herself is technically a natural predator because she's a canine. Granted, she's a domesticated type, but still.
  • Ink-Suit Actor: She's basically Jenny Slate if she were a Pomeranian dog.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: She has blue eyes and is generally a Nice Girl herself.
  • Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique: Gives this to Ozone by constantly slapping him for him to give Max's location at the sewers to her.
  • Karmic Jackpot: Her undying dedication to searching for Max and protecting him from Snowball and his minions pays off when he returns her feelings for him at the end. Of course, she had to fight off Snowball's army before he even really notices her.
  • Mama Bear: In the sequel, she was requested by Max to take care of his ball named Busy Bee, which she accidentally lost in an apartment full of cats, forcing herself to retrieve the toy from there.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: Since Pomeranians are naturally slimmer than what their fur suggests (depending on how much they're fed, that is), seeing her perform a Curb-Stomp Battle against the Flushed Pets is a rather impressive move for such a small dog.
  • Nice Girl: Sweet-natured and affectionate.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero!: She accidentally gives away Max's name to Snowball (who only referred to him as "Tiny Dog" till that point), which now makes him aware of the identity of his target.
  • Nice, Mean, and In-Between: The upbeat Nice to Max's Mean and Duke's In-between.
  • Ojou: She lives in a fancy apartment and is pampered like a princess.
  • Older Than She Looks: Granted, given the nature of her breed.
  • One-Woman Army: The Flushed Pets had no idea what awaited them.
  • Pink Means Feminine: Wears a pink bow on her head.
  • Pint-Size Powerhouse: This tiny Pomeranian? She can deck an army of pets.
  • Plucky Girl: The one who assembles Max's Search Party, and is totally prepared to go rescue Max without additional help.
  • Precious Puppy: Though technically an adult, the mere fact that she still looks and behaves like a puppynote  just amps up her cuteness factor.
  • Spoiled Sweet: Her owners spoil her, and she's a very kind and caring dog.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: She emphasizes that she doesn't care about Max more than as a friend and she really doesn't care if his new roommate is a girl or a boy, without being prompted. He's too wrapped up in his own troubles to notice, though.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Max.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend:
    • Downplayed in the first film as she's not technically his girlfriend yet (though, she hopes to be), but Gidget trashed the Flushed Pets' asses when they were about to kill Max.
    • Played Straight in the sequel where, just as she and her friends, including the old lady's cats, are being tasked to rescue Hu from Sergei, Gidget manages to foil Sergei's plans of targeting her friends, including Max, by running him over with the cat lady's car.
  • Virtuous Character Copy: Believe it or not, she turns out to be this to Dawn Bellwether from Zootopia, another 2016 animated film (coincidentally). Other than sharing the same voice actress, both Bellwether and Gidget are also white-furred animals who have been living with other animals who have different species-based backgrounds. While Bellwether despises predators and only views her fellow preys as mere pawns, Gidget is willing to befriend any kind of pet animal no matter who or what they are... so long as they don't provoke her enough.
  • Womanchild: A type of character you can find from Jenny Slate, Gidget herself is an adult Pomeranian who still has the mindset of an excitable puppy.

    Chloe
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chloe_4_3.png
Voiced by: Lake BellForeign languages

An obese and apathetic grey domestic short-haired cat, and one of Max's friends.

  • Animal Stereotypes: She's a cat with a very cynical worldview.
  • Artistic License – Animal Care: She eats cakes. That's not something a cat should be able to do without a serious stomachache at best and life-threatening indigestion at worst.
  • Big Eater: She eats an entire roast chicken and a cake.
  • Butt-Monkey: More than anyone else in the movie, she has her dignity repeatedly destroyed, most notably when she ends up on YouTube.
  • Cats Are Mean: Downplayed to "Cats Are Snarky Jerks With Hearts Of Gold"; she's a bit aloof, cutting and haughty and states to Max's face that she doesn't care about him or his problems, but she clearly cares more than she lets on.
  • Cats Are Snarkers: She makes sarcastic comments towards Max and about the rescue mission for the whole film.
  • The Cynic: Ironic, considering that she's a cat herself. Compared to the cheery Gidget, Chloe herself isn't that energetic and frequently makes sarcastic comments.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Every word she says just spills sarcasm.
  • Expy: She's more or less a female Garfield. She's also the same breed as Pusheen the Cat.
  • Fat and Skinny: The Fat to Gidget's Skinny.note
  • Fat Bitch: She's a fat cat and rather cold.
  • Gleeful and Grumpy Pairing: The deadpan Grumpy to Gidget's Gleeful.
  • The Hedonist: Her Establishing Character Moment is her attempting to resist (and eventually succumbing to) her urge to eat an entire roast chicken. And then repeating the process with a cake.
  • Hypocritical Humor: She rolls her eyes at the dogs obsessing over the green ball, then goes nuts the second she sees the dot from a laser pointer.
  • I Meant to Do That: She's actually quite clumsy and prone to accidents and embarrassments, as most obviously demonstrated with her calamity with the buffet at the party. As with all cats, her typical reaction after the fact is haughty nonchalance and acting like nothing untoward happened at all.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While she is being a dick about it, she is right when she says that Max's problem with Duke is something that is none of her concern. Her advice that Max needs to stand up for himself and assert that he's the "alpha" if he doesn't want Duke to bully him into submission in his own home is also not without merit.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She claims not to care about Max's problems and once tried to eat Sweet Pea, but she's the first one to go along with Gidget's call to action. She also convinces the others to come along by pointing out how Max has helped them all in the past.
  • Not So Above It All:
    • Like any cat, she affects an air of aloof dignity. Like any cat, she goes completely to pieces when startled and bounces across the entire buffet at Pops' party. Which is then broadcast on YouTube.
    • For all her aloof indifference and claiming to not care about Max or his problems, she still drops everything to help him out when he's lost. She also clearly happy to be reunited with her owner at the end.
  • Odd Friendship: Despite her snarking that she doesn't care about Max or his problems, of the gang we follow they seem to be each other's best friend.
  • Tsundere: She goes out of her way to pretend that she doesn't care about Max, but she's the one who gets everyone on board with saving him. And when her owner gets home, she spends a bit of time being moderately annoyed with her and even biting her finger before licking her, but can't quite conceal a fond little smile when she gets hugged.

    Tiberius
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tiberius_9.png
Voiced by: Albert BrooksForeign languages

A sardonic red-tailed hawk who helps Gidget find Max.

  • Actor Allusion: Albert Brooks is playing an animal who is on a journey to rescue another animal? Well, that seems familiar...
  • Ambiguously Gay: After Gidget describes what Max looks like, Tiberius says that he sounds dreamy.
  • The Atoner: The reason he helps Gidget is to make-up for trying to eat her.
  • Big Brother Instinct: For the sake of Max and Gidget, he delivers Ozone the cat to be interrogated for the former's whereabouts.
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: He is nowhere to be seen in the sequel, nor is he mentioned.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Has his moments.
  • Everyone Has Standards: He refuses to eat Ozone for being "too ugly".
  • Freudian Excuse: He justifies his attempt to eat Gidget with the fact that he was "born with killer instincts".
  • Freudian Slippery Slope: "You're a very thoughtful food. Food? Did i say that?" Attempts to correct himself just make it worse.
  • Gleeful and Grumpy Pairing: The snarky Grumpy to Gidget's Gleeful.
  • Heel–Face Turn: In his first scene, he tricks Gidget into letting him out of his cage so he can try to eat her, but the attempt is foiled by the chain around his foot. He regrets his actions after Gidget scolds him, and, following her removing the chain, he never tries to eat her again.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: After his failed attempt to eat her, he confesses to Gidget that he's very lonely, and that no-one will be his friend because they're afraid he'll eat them. One wonders why...
  • Imagine Spot: After Gidget promises to be his friend in exchange for finding Max, Tiberius fantasizes about flying through the city with her on his back. And then both of them laughing maniacally as they swoop down on a luckless squirrel.
  • Noble Bird of Prey: He's a red-tailed hawk. While not exactly noble, he at least acknowledges his own shortcomings and helps the cast out.
  • Pet the Dog: Not literally, but while he's mostly sarcastic and has a not-very-well-hidden urge to eat the smaller animals of the party, we see him at the end affectionately nuzzling his human owner when they're reunited.
  • Reluctant Psycho: He really is lonely and wants friends, but when you're a bird of prey, it's just hard not to try eating small, fluffy things.
  • Running Gag: He continually attempts to eat some of the smaller members of the group. Justified since even "domesticated" hawks have a habit of trying to eat small animals, as it's hard-wired into their brains.
  • Token Evil Teammate: While he does join the effort to find Max, Tiberius is barely able to prevent himself from eating Norman and other pets.

    Pops
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pets_pops_ca_01.png
Voiced by: Dana CarveyForeign languages

An elderly Basset Hound, who is paralyzed in his back legs and helps Gidget and the pets find Max and Duke.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: He makes flirty comments at Chloe which disgust her.
  • Accidental Misnaming: He calls Chloe "Rhonda", for some reason.
  • Cool Old Guy: He's an aged Basset Hound who takes advantage of the fact that his owner is rarely home by making his apartment into a local hot spot where pets are free to come in and party as they please. At one point, he gets hit off a wooden plank by by metal beam over dozens of feet above the ground and makes back up in a pipe without a scratch.
  • Dirty Old Man: His comments towards Chloe seem to imply this.
  • Gallows Humor: When asked how he is, he replies "Paralyzed." Later he hurries them up by saying that for him, every breath is a cliffhanger so they'd better move it.
  • Grumpy Old Man: Initially, though he quickly warms up to the group.
  • Handicapped Badass: Despite his paralysis, Pops does manage to lead the search team into the sewers, which involves crossing some dangerous (and high up) sections of New York.
  • Interspecies Romance: He becomes smitten with Chloe, to the point of referring to her as his girlfriend. Needless to say, the cat does not reciprocate.
  • Old Friend: Of Buddy's.
  • Screw Politeness, I'm a Senior!: His motto.

    Mel

    Buddy

A laid-back Dachshund and one of Max's friends.

    Sweetpea

A small parakeet and one of Max's friends.

    Norman
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/norman_transparent.png
Voiced by: Chris RenaudForeign languages

A guinea pig who keeps getting lost trying to find his apartment.

  • Butt-Monkey: This guy gets a lot of physical mishaps.
  • Creator Cameo: Chris Renaud is the movie's director.
  • Determinator: He spent three weeks trying to find his way back to his apartment room.
  • The Ditz: He is clearly shown not to be the sharpest tool in the shed among the search party.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: He finally succeeds in a heartwarming fashion at the end of the first movie, much to his owner's joy.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Has a short one after he briefly joins the Flushed Pets. Although given his general lack of smarts and amiability, it seems to be based more on a lack of understanding of precisely what's going on combined with his just being friendly and sociable more than anything else.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: He abandons the group after Gidget blows their cover to the Flushed Pets. He ends up getting caught by them anyway and joins them.
  • Too Dumb to Live: His tendency to get lost in the wrong pipe often gets him in trouble, such as when it causes him to come face to face with a flushed Sewer Gator.
  • With Friends Like These...: He is shown laughing along with the Flushed Pets at Max right before they're about to attack him for supposedly attacking Snowball. Although in his defense, given his general amiable nature and lack of smarts, he seems to be just genuinely pleased to see Max while not fully understanding exactly what's going on.

Human Pet Owners

    Katie
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/katie.png
Voiced by: Ellie KemperForeign languages

A kindhearted human girl and Max and Duke's owner.

  • Happily Married: With Chuck in the second movie.
  • Ivy League for Everyone: Early on, she is seen in the bathroom wearing a Dartmouth shirt. Certainly justifiable as her apartment and furnishings implies a fairly well-paid job.
  • Nice Girl: She's a very kind and loving soul, adopting both Max and Duke, at different times, purely because she couldn't stand to see them in the pound.
  • The Pollyanna: She is always expecting the things she does to have the best possible outcome. The way she introduced Duke to Max could have turned out much, much worse than it did.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: When she got home and saw her house trashed due to Max and Duke's actions, rather than berate Max and Duke, she quietly thanked whatever deity she believes in that things weren't worse, and Max and Duke are apparently okay with each other, and have worked out their issues.

    Fred
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/earlier_owner_of_duke.png

Duke's old owner.

  • Bus Crash: By the time Duke is able to make it back to his old home, Fred has sadly died.
  • Cool Old Guy: Still more than willing to play with Duke despite his age.
  • Dead All Along: Unfortunately, he's dead by the time the story takes place and Duke is devastated and in denial when he learns.
  • The Voiceless: He has no lines of dialogue in his flashback appearance.

    Cat Lady
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/thesecretlifeofpets2_catlady.png
The owner of her dozens of cats.
  • Cool Old Lady: She's caring to, and even supportive for, her pet cats.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: Owns a bunch of cats and is a serene lady herself.
  • Mama Bear: When her cats deceived her into thinking that they have ran out of food, she decides to buy some for them, along with joining them (alongside Gidget and her friends) on the ride.
  • Nice Girl: She's implicitly a welcoming old woman.
  • No Name Given: Her name is never revealed; even the end credits of the sequel just list her as "Cat Lady".
  • Small Role, Big Impact: She's not that narratively active in the sequel, but she was the one who would provide a solution to Snowball's mission to rescue Hu from Sergei.

The Flushed Pets

    Tattoo
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pets_tattoo_ca_01.png
Voiced by: Michael Beattie

A dull-witted domestic pig and one of Snowball's chief enforcers.

  • Freudian Excuse: This pig is quite correct to be angry and resentful that his only purpose as a pet was to be a practice dummy for tattoo artists until they ran out of space, where he was summarily abandoned.
  • Let's Meet the Meat: Although he doesn't want to be eaten, many of his tattoos are reminiscent of this trope, as they map out the location of pork chops, ham, and bacon on his body.
  • Sinister Swine: A pig who's a member of the Flushed Pets.
  • Tattooed Crook: He has tattoos all across his body. The fact that "Tattoo" is his name should definitely tell you something.

    Ripper
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pets_ripper_ca_01.png
A silent, perpetually frowning English Bulldog and one of Snowball's chief enforcers.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Barely ever smiles.
  • The Stoic: His expression never changes throughout the film, even when witnessing Max and Duke accidentally murder The Viper, or when the Animal Control van plummets into the river with Max and Duke inside.
  • The Voiceless: Has no lines, which may be because of the muzzle on his mouth.

    Ozone
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pets_ozone_ca_01_copia.png
Voiced by: Steve CooganForeign languages

A hairless Sphinx cat who Max and Duke encounter in the alley.

  • All There in the Manual: His name is never said in the film.
  • Bald of Evil: A hairless Sphinx cat and on the side of evil.
  • Cats Are Mean: If you are one of the Flushed Pets, it is a given.
  • Dirty Coward: Despite looking horrid, he's ironically an easy target of fear himself, as shown when Gidget pulls off a Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique on him.
  • Evil Brit: He is voiced by Steve Coogan after all.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: He is scared that Gidget would be that angered after provoking her too much for not giving to her about Max's whereabouts.
  • Evil Is Petty: Decides not to give to both Gidget and Tiberius Max's whereabouts. Naturally, this royally pisses Gidget off.
  • For the Evulz: He outright destroys Max and Duke's collars, confiscating their tags for no real reason, and then summons an army of feral cats when Duke complains, all of whom absolutely torment both dogs until Animal Control shows up.
  • Green and Mean: Has yellowish green eyes and is a nasty feline himself.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: He thinks that he can just refuse to give info about Max and Duke's whereabouts to both Gidget and Tiberius just to spite the latter two, without realizing that Gidget can be easily angered when needlessly provoked.
  • Insufferable Imbecile: Lampshaded by Tiberius, where he described Ozone as "too stupid to talk".
  • Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique: All Gidget had to do was slap the shit out of him to find out what happened to Max.
  • Lean and Mean: He is an absolutely scrawny feline who picks fights with other animals.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain!: Had he never stolen Max's collar right after the latter was captured by the Flushed Pets, then Gidget and Tiberius wouldn't have recruited other pet animals to save Max himself and Duke.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Tiberius sums it up best.
Tiberius: He's too stupid to talk, and too ugly to eat!
  • Too Spicy for Yog-Sothoth: Tiberius refuses to eat him for being "too ugly".
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: We never find out what happened to him after he told Gidget and Tiberius where Max went. Then again, he is seen in a mid-credits scene at a party at Leonard the Poodle's apartment, so it's safe to assume that Gidget and Tiberius let him go after learning of Max's whereabouts.

    The Viper (MAJOR UNMARKED SPOILERS)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/viper_3.png

A massive, one-fanged snake who initiates new recruits into the Flushed Pets by biting them.

    Ricky

A male duck who was a member of the Flushed Pets before dying prior to the events of the film. According to Snowball, he was the only member of the Flushed Pets who was ready to kill humans on sight.

Other Pet Animals

    Reginald (UNMARKED SPOILERS)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/secretlifeofpets42.jpg
Voiced by: Steve Coogan

A Himalayan cat who lives in the house that used to belong to Duke and his former owner Fred in Brooklyn.

  • All There in the Script: His name isn't spoken in the film, but it is shown in the credits.
  • Cats Are Mean: Sort of. He hisses at Duke after popping out of a pot, tells him he looks dirty and asks him and Max to get lost before he gets fleas from both dogs.
  • Kick the Dog: While not literal, he reveals to Duke that his owner died in a callous manner.
Duke: And why, why would Fred get a CAT? He hates cats. That’s one of the things I love about him.
Reginald: (fake sympathy) Fred, the old guy? He um...he died.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: While he only appears in one scene, it is this scene where he tells Duke that his old owner died after he disappeared, which causes him to believe the cat is lying and accuse Max of trying to get rid of him, only for Animal Control to show up and try to catch the dogs.

Voiced by: Harrison FordForeign languages

A sheep dog that works at a farm and helps Max get over his fear.

  • Anger Born of Worry: Whenever someone else has messed up in the farm he's living in and working at, he'll go all berserk over it.
  • The Big Guy: He's notably one of the larger canines seen in the franchise, even standing taller than Pops.
  • Cool Old Guy: A Welsh Sheepdog that isn't nearly as old as Pops, but is getting there in age. Despite getting older, he's still able to take down a fox and stop a cattle stampede with no difficulty. He also invites Max to howl with him on a tractor and he gives him a cool bandana. Duke thinks he's a badass as soon as he meets him, and eventually Max starts to think he's cool.
Duke: So, how did it go? What happened?
Max: You know, it was pretty intense! Tell him, Rooster!
Rooster: You know, some stuff happened, now it's over.
Duke: Wow! He can really tell a story.
    Max: Right?
  • Deadpan Snarker: Other than Chloe, there is now Rooster.
Max: (about his cone) My therapist says I need it.
(Rooster pulls the cone off Max)
    Rooster: There. You're cured. Hallelujah.
  • A Dog Named "Cat": Or rather a dog named Rooster.
  • Ear Notch: Has a notch in his ear, how he got it is unknown.
  • Grumpy Old Man: He gives a cold welcome to Max and Duke when they first arrive at the farm. He doesn't have time for Max's worries and reluctantly makes him go in the forest to save Cotton. He eventually warms up to Max once he's faced his fears.
  • Ironic Name: Roosters are types of chickens, but Rooster himself is anything but fearful.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While he's gruff about it, the advice he gives to Max is true. Most of the time, a kid will learn that doing something dangerous will result in them getting hurt. Said kid will not do that thing anymore in order to avoid danger. However, there are those times where a little protection is necessary to prevent the child from getting killed.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Rooster is a strong believer in tough love. He takes a very blunt approach in dealing with Max, brusquely telling Max to get over his issues as fear and uncertainty are facts of life.
  • Mistakes Are Not the End of the World: This is his other basic philosophy besides the whole tough love thing.
Rooster: Oh, so he got really high up in this hypothetical tree? Kid gets hurt, he learns not to do it again. You know how many electric cords I've chewed?
    Max: Like multiple cords?
Rooster: One. It shocked me. I walked backward for a week, but I never chewed a cord again.
  • Nobody Calls Me "Chicken"!: In a literal example not related to bravery, he gets upset when Duke calls him Mr. Chicken after looking at the Rooster emblem on his water dish.
Duke: We are so sorry, Mr...Chicken?
Rooster: Name's not chicken, do I look like a chicken to you?
    Max: No, sir.
Duke: Nope, not even a little.
    Rooster: Name's Rooster.
  • Not So Stoic: While it seems like he fears nothing, Rooster gets worried when he can't find Cotton. He is sent into panic when he finds the lamb on a tree that is about to fall off a cliff. He also gets scared when it looks like Max and Cotton will meet their doom. Luckily, Rooster is able to save both.
  • Papa Wolf: Being a sheep dog himself, when he hears that Cotton is missing, he assists Max in helping him save the lamb.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Usually has a grumpy expression due to his stoic nature.
  • The Stoic: Oh so much. He later shows sadness when Max and his family go back to the city, proving that he’s Not So Stoic.
  • Tough Love: As already mentioned, he is very big on this. He doesn't get why Max is so protective of Liam. Max wants to protect Liam from everything, but Rooster recognizes that Liam doesn't need it.
Rooster: Kid seems fine to me. You're the one who's scared of everything.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Gives one of these to Max when he accidentally breaks the sheep fence, which causes all the sheep to escape.
    Rooster: What's going on?
    Max: Don't worry, I'm-I'm fine.
Rooster: You let all the sheep out!
    Max: I did?

Voiced by: Tiffany HaddishForeign languages

A small, caring Shih Tzu who enlists Snowball in helping her rescue the young tiger, Hu.

  • Damsel in Distress: Gets captured by Sergei, along with Hu, in the climax.
  • Evil-Detecting Dog: While seeing how poorly Sergei treats Hu, she can tell just by looking at him that he is, as she puts it, "pure concentrated circus evil".
  • Non-Standard Character Design: She has a more realistic appearance than all the other characters.
  • Plucky Girl: Was willing to do everything she could to save Hu from Sergei and was able to outmaneuver the wolves, as well as save Snowball, while freeing the tiger cub.

    Cat Lady's Cats

Voiced by: Michael Beattie (Skinny Cat), Fred Tatasciore
A group of cats who live in the same building as Gidget does.
  • All There in the Script: One of the cats is listed as "Skinny Cat" in the sequel's end credits.
  • Bully Turned Buddy: They've all antagonized Gidget for trying to retrieve Busy Bee from them, but the moment she calmed them down, they have all befriended them as of the moment.
  • Cats Are Mean: All of them are proven to be highly mischievous and vicious.
  • The Dividual: They are never separate from each other.
  • No Name Given: None of their names are ever revealed, though one of them is credited as "Skinny Cat".
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: More like "Kitty-Cat Eyes", but they all display this to their owner just as they are preparing for their mission to save Hu.

    Sergei

Voiced by: Nick Kroll Foreign voice actors

An abusive and cruel circus ringmaster and the Big Bad of the sequel.

  • Ax-Crazy: This guy is really not right in his mind, willing to mistreat a bunch of animals for his circus business. And if that's not enough, he even has the audacity to end anyone who gets in his way.
  • Bad Boss: He treats both the animals and workers in his circus terribly. The one exception is his spider monkey sidekick, "Little Sergei", whom he treats quite well.
  • Bad People Abuse Animals: He treats his circus animals badly, often taking a whip to them and threatening to make them into coats or rugs.
  • Big Bad: Of The Secret Life of Pets 2.
  • Captain Ersatz: He looks like a thinner Felonious Gru. He dresses in black, has a big nose, speaks in a Russian accent, and is bald. Hey, it's Illumination's first big hit. You gotta reference it in some way, shape, or form.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: In the first film, Snowball's villainy before he reformed was more over-the-top and silly and he treated his fellow flushed-pets with respect while in the sequel, Sergei’s villainy is played much more serious and the only one he treats kindly is his pet monkey, Little Sergei. What also sets them apart is that Snowball is a Tragic Villain and has a more fleshed-out personality while Sergei is a more Flat Character and has little personality other than being a circus owner.
  • Cruella to Animals: He tries to force Hu to jump into a pool of water for his act, and threatens to make a rug out of him if he doesn't. When Hu is released, Sergei threatens to make one of his wolves into a coat for Little Sergei.
  • Dastardly Whiplash: His design appears to borrow from this trope, though he lacks the signature mustache and either lacks many of the archetypes traits or is so Out of Focus they don't show well.
  • The Dreaded: Most of the animal characters (with the possible exception of his wolves and his primary henchmen monkey) are extremely terrified of him, especially Hu, who refuses to participate in a trick because of his horrible treatment of him.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: He is in utter rage the moment Snowball and his newfound friends are attempting to rescue Hu from his clutches.
  • Evil, Inc.: "Sergei's Circus of Fun" doesn't sound that fun, at all.
  • Evil Wears Black: He is a very bad man who wears a black hat and a black coat.
  • Flat Character: Generic villain, with no motive, back story, and little traits other than cruel and wants money.
  • Humiliation Conga: He is mauled by the protagonists, then just as he claims the upper hand, he is run over by the cat lady, twice, and then sprayed with mud from under her car's wheels.
  • Kick the Dog: He literally kicks Max into a basement window.
  • Nice to One: He abuses his workers and animals, including even his wolves, but treats Little Sergei well, offering him a banana and even saying he would give him a wolf coat if the wolves fail.
  • Repulsive Ringmaster: His witch hat and Sinister Schnoz give off this impression.
  • Sinister Schnoz: He is the movie's villain and his nose shows it.
  • Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: The most serious antagonist in an Illumination movie since the bears from Sing.
  • You Have Failed Me: He threatens to turn Hu into a rug if he fails to jump into a pool of water. Then he threatens to turn one of the wolves into a coat if they can't find Hu when he runs away.
  • You No Take Candle: His speech pattern is a little broken, likely due to the accent.

    Little Sergei
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/secret_life_of_pets_2_little_sergei.jpg
Sergei's pet monkey named after him.

    The Wolves
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/secret_life_of_pets_2_wolves.jpg
A pack of identical looking black wolves that serve Sergei.
  • Angry Guard Dog: Have this role, though as stated they are wolves and not dogs.
  • Big "WHAT?!": One of them exclaims it before being struck by one of the train bars.
  • Dark Is Evil: All the wolves have black fur and work for Sergei.
  • Savage Wolves: They're large and vicious black wolves, though they are implied to also be victims of Sergei when he threatens to hurt one of them.

    Hu
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/secret_life_of_pets_2_hu.jpg
A gentle but destructive baby white tiger that was rescued from the circus.
  • Cats Hate Water: He's shown resisting going into a tub of water for a circus trick, though it's not clear if he's afraid of the water or just scared of the massive fall down into it. note
  • Cute Kitten: He's portrayed this way, with his incredibly large blue eyes, and gentle and sweet demeanor, though being a tiger he's still bigger than most of the cast and is very destructive like exotic pets tend to be.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: He finally evades from Sergei's clutches, and finds a new, more comfortable home in the form of the cat lady's residence, where he's even seen playing with her.
  • Good Cannot Comprehend Evil: Throughout his tenure in Sergei's Circus of Fun, he is often terrified at Sergei's mistreatment of himself.
  • Token Good Teammate: To Sergei's Circus of Fun, as he was reluctant in being recruited in the business.
  • Token Minority: By the sequel's end, he's the only feline owned by the cat lady to not be a domesticated type.
  • The Voiceless: He cannot talk because the dogs don't speak wild animal (although this conflicts with the fact that Tiberius, a wild red-tailed hawk, was able to speak to them in the first movie).
