The villainous teams of the Hoenn region. Their goals are both to "improve the Hoenn region" by each summoning a legendary from the Weather Trio.

Tropes for both teams:

• Adaptation Expansion: Both teams utilize more species than their Pokémon counterparts:
  • Cottage members use Vulpix, Magcargo, and Gloom.
  • Pastel members use more Water-types than Carvanha, including Jellicent and Kingdra.
• Affectionate Parody: They're exaggerated parodies of the "aesthetic" side of the Animal Crossing fandom, being shown as ecoterrorists all-too-eager to destroy the Hoenn region for their personal gain.
• Big Bad Ensemble: Both teams are villainous legions who threaten the Hoenn region's safety, whether that's through petty theft or committing more serious crimes.
• Chest Insignia: Team Pastel members wear a pastel-colored pearl as their insignia, while Team Cottage wears a brown mushroom.
• Color Contrast: Cottage members exclusively wear neutral colors and monochrome, while Pastel members wear bright purple with teal accents.
• Evil Former Friend: A romantic variant: Dobie and Judy were a couple that broke up before the story begins, forming their own teams after said break up.
• Evil Versus Evil: Just like their canon counterparts, Cottage and Pastel are antagonistic and are constantly fighting each other when not trying to take over the Hoenn region.
• Foreshadowing: It's implied that Don has ties to both of them, as part of his suit includes their emblems and he's awfully quiet about their actions through the story. It's confirmed that he's funding them both behind each others' backs.
• Fluffy the Terrible: Pastel and Cottage are cute names for villainous teams who go around killing others and terrorizing the Hoenn region.
• Gendered Outfit: Grunts on both teams have a uniform depending on the gender. For Cottage, males wear a waistcoat and button-up shirt while females wear a collared blouse and pinafore dress. In Pastel, both wear purple sailor themed uniforms with slight cosmetic differences (males have sleeveless shirts, while females get full sleeves and crop tops).
• History Repeats: In the past, an interspecies couple (one half of the duo being a wolf) summoned Groudon and Kyogre after breaking up and declaring war on each other. It's heavily foreshadowed that Judy and Dobie plan to do the same thing.
• We Used to Be Friends: Chapter 20 implies that Judy and Dobie, the leaders of each team, were a couple at one point. Later confirmed at the end of Chapter 44.

Tropes that apply to Team Pastel:

• Bare Midriffs Are Feminine: Like their counterpart Team Aqua, female Pastel members wear loose cropped shirts.
• Bright Is Not Good: Team Pastel is decked out in vibrant purple outfits and utilize brightly colored Pokémon, but they're still relentless thieves who ransack museums and institutes.
• Cute Is Evil: Pastel consist of cute colorful pastel villagers in sailor uniforms, but are one of the major antagonist forces of the story.
• Orwellian Retcon: Team Pastel was only shown to have generic cat villagers as grunts, but the retcon shows animals who aren't cats (Megan, Diana, Sasha, Cookie, and Marshal) as members of the group.
• Pink Girl, Blue Boy: Judy (the female leader) has bright pink fur, while Filbert and Julian have blue fur.
• Signature Headgear: Both Filbert and Julian wear distinct sailing themed hats (Filbert's captain hat, Julian's beret) to make them stand out as the admins of the team. Judy wears a bow in her braid that wields her Key Stone.
• Theme Naming: Team Pastel's leader and admins have space-themed last names to tie into the cosmic motifs of the story:
  • Judy Nebula
  • Filbert Berenice (a constellation in the sky)
  • Julian Galassia (Italian for galaxy)

Tropes that apply to Team Cottage:

• Creepy Twins: Beau and Fauna are fraternal twins, and they're unnervingly loyal to Dobie (Fauna because she genuinely respects him, Beau because he has no other choice).
• Disproportionate Retribution: Team Cottage are fond of this:
  • Leave Team Cottage? Expect your ex-boss to show up in your new hometown, interrupt a festival and demand you rejoin.
  • Point out Dobie's flaws? Expect violence in some form, whether that be a slap to the face, a death threat, or attempted murder.
• Never Say "Die": While the story uses other terms for death, Team Cottage prefer to use the term 'eliminate' rather than kill or die.

Dobie Lupus

The leader of Team Cottage.

• A Lizard Named "Liz": Downplayed. His last name is lupus, the scientific genus for wolf.
• Bad Boss: He assaults and berates Beau (one of his admins) for losing in a battle, shows no care to anyone around him, and is more than happy to 'eliminate' any grunts that fail his goals.
• Black Eyes of Evil: He has dark grey sclera and is much more antagonistic to the protagonists than Judy is.
• Can't Take Criticism: This is his main character flaw. Even suggesting a slightly different plan than usual drives him to beating up or even threatening to kill his enemies.
• Even Evil Has Standards: While Dobie may be a homicidal maniac with serious issues who's beaten up minors and suggests that Frank is a pervert, at least he's not transphobic to Holly. Nevertheless, he still does not care if she is now a woman or not once she ambushes him.
• Hair-Trigger Temper: Despite appearing to be calm at first, he has a short temper and flips out into violence over any criticism, even coming from his own admins.
• Hypocrite: Dobie believes that Frank is "a sick freak" who talked the protagonists into helping his crusade, despite doing the exact same thing to Beau and Fauna.
• Machete Mayhem: Appropriately for the homicidal leader of an ecoterrorist group, Dobie wields a machete which he's used to decapitate Leopold.
• Savage Wolves: He's a wolf and much more violent than his counterpart Judy. He physically abuses his admins, punches Tank for lashing out at him, threatens to murder Blathers over meteor shards, beats the shit out of Holly before she could challenge him to a Pokémon battle, and murdered Leopold over the town's Pokémon.
• Sophisticated as Hell: While he speaks very formally and much more distinguished than his enemies, he tends to swear more than the protagonists do.
• Would Hurt a Child: Age doesn't matter for his violence, as he's beaten up at least two fourteen-year-olds over the course of the story.

Beau Buckingham

One of the Buckingham twins.

• Adaptation Dye-Job: Downplayed. In Animal Crossing, Beau's eyes are blue. Here, his eyes are grey.
• Evil Redhead: He has wavy orange hair and is an active admin of Team Cottage.
• Signature Mon: His ace Pokémon is a Magcargo.
• Trapped in Villainy: Despite being an admin, he regrets being in Team Cottage and wants to quit already. However, due to Dobie's abuse, he's trapped and unable to just quit and run away.

Fauna Buckingham

The other Buckingham twin.

• Bambification: Averted. She's a white-tailed deer and as ruthless and violent as her boss is.
• Dark Action Girl: She's a ruthless Pokémon trainer who has no problem interrupting a town's festival just to get an ex-member back on the team.
• Elder Abuse: She has no problem demanding that Cottage members grab an old woman from the crowd and interrogate her on where a former member is.
• Signature Mon: Her ace is a Vulpix, that later evolved into a Ninetales.
• The Stoic: In her first appearance, she's more prone to emotional outbursts. In her return for chapter 37, she's much less emotional, even after losing a battle.
• Ungrateful Bastard: Her parents accuse her of being this, as a coverup for their emotional abuse and favoritism.
• The Un-Favourite: She's her parent's least favorite child, due to being the girl that they didn't want.

Judith "Judy" Nebula

The leader of Team Pastel.

• Affably Evil: She casually fires grunts without a care, but she talks more casually compared to Dobie. She's also suggested to be more progressive, hiring anyone no matter their species (meanwhile Dobie exclusively hires deer). One chapter presents herself as a temporary ally to the protagonists, albeit just to fight Dobie.
• Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance: Her hair is braided to look like a mermaid's tail, fitting a Water-type user.
• Bears Are Bad News: She's a bear, and a villainous one at that (ransacks a local museum, orders her admin to tie up a civilian, wants to summon Kyogre in the name of Pokémon liberation).
• Big Creepy-Crawlies: She has the Bug-type Masquerain on her team, which appropriately knows Bubble Beam.
• The Fake Cutie: Judy puts on an act where she's seen as a cute yet competent team leader, complete with the cutesy catchphrase of 'my oh my'. However, she's much more malicious and hellbent on getting revenge on her ex-boyfriend.
• Ma'am Shock: She reacts this way internally when Tank calls her ma'am
  "For crying out loud, I just turned thirty!"
• Magical Accessory: She wears a bow in her hair with a Mega Stone attached.
• Meaningful Appearance: Her multicolored hair is stylized into a mermaid's tail, representing both her use of Water-types and her ruthlessness.
• Only Known by Their Nickname: Downplayed. Dobie, her ex-boyfriend, calls her by her real name (Judith). Most animals call her Judy, while others (such as Holly and Marshal) refer to her as Jude.
• Purple Is Powerful: Her outfit consists primarily of bright shades of purple, and she's the highly competent leader of her team.
• Toxic Friend Influence: Judy and Filbert are childhood friends, and she manipulates him into working for her team.

Filbert Berenice

One of the two Pastel admins.

• Affably Evil: He ties up Baabara (the sheep working at the Slateport museum) and apologizes for it, saying he's only doing it because his boss is telling him to.
• Childhood Friends: Implied, when Filbert states he's been friends with Judy for twenty-four years (Judy had just turned thirty in the fic's timeline).
• Foil: To Julian. Both are male blue mammals working for Judy, but while Julian is more loyal and obedient to the point of obsession, Filbert is critical and not so willing to carry out crimes.
• Only Sane Man: He's the only authority figure in Team Pastel who isn't strung up in a harebrained scheme for Pokémon liberation.
• Punch-Clock Villain: Filbert isn't truly evil, he's just following Judy's orders.
• Signature Mon: His ace is a Jellicent.

Julian Galassia

The other admin for Team Pastel.

• Expy: He's based on Earl Dorian Red Gloria, both being flamboyant thieves with long curly hair, a taste for pretty things, and sexual attraction to an enemy who isn't interested back.
• Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He has long curly blue hair tied in a ponytail and puts more effort into his appearance than his friends.
• Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Before being properly confronted by Apollo and the group, Julian used a Natu with Teleport to head out of Southern Island.
• Signature Mon: His ace Pokémon is a Kingdra.
• Sissy Villain: He dresses like a campy sea captain, wears bright makeup and is willing to capture legendaries to appeal to his boss.
• Undying Loyalty: He's completely loyal to Judy, to the point that he never questions her or her actions.

Professor Tom Nook

The professor of the Hoenn region. The story's first scene starts with him, although he plays a minor role in the story as a researcher who assigns Tank tasks relating to catching Pokémon.

• Adaptational Badass: Birch's "chased by a Poochyena" gag doesn't apply to him (instead given to Leila the kappa), and he wields a Key Stone, all but stating he has a Pokémon that can Mega Evolve.
• Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: In canon, Crazy Redd and Tom Nook are former business partners. Here, they're also exes. While he and Sable only have Ship Tease in the games, he's happily married to her.
• Affectionate Nickname: His nickname for his wife Sable is 'shortbread', as a pun on her first name.
• Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: An uncle variant. Timmy and Tommy think it's embarassing that their uncle is a huge fan of toku series.
• Big Beautiful Man: He's a large chubby tanuki, and his sweet personality is what Sable fell in love with.
• Big Good: He's one to the main trio, gifting them their starters and items for their journeys.
• Composite Character: Directly based on Birch's role as a professor, but has elements of Sycamore (namely, it's suggested he knows about Mega Evolution) involved in his characterization.
• Former Teen Rebel: Downplayed. He was a male stripper and used to work with Crazy Redd in his twenties, but quit after Crazy Redd accidentally killed several Pokémon.
• Happily Married: To Sable. He cares for her well-being, supports her individual endeavors and is looking forward to having children with her.
• Hidden Depths: Beyond his work as a regional professor studying environments, Nook is both an expert toku cosplayer and skilled dancer.
• Hooker with a Heart of Gold: A male version. Tom Nook is a former stripper and a very nice guy outside of his past profession.
• My God, What Have I Done?: After getting chewed out by Tank, Professor Nook immediately regrets yelling at him and putting Pokémon research above his researcher's health. He gets better and works to reconcile his friendship with Tank.
• Nice Guy: He's a chipper and friendly man, just like his original incarnation.
• The Nicknamer: At the end of chapter 28, Professor Nook mentions 'Kabosu' will fly him in the next day. The next chapter reveals that Kabosu is his Xatu.
• Parental Substitute: To Tank. While Rockwell (Tank's dad) is currently in recovery after Team Cottage ransacked Fortree City, Tom Nook frequently checks in on Tank and looks out for his well-being.
• Signature Mon: He has a Net Ball and Key Stone on hand, suggesting a Bug-type that can mega evolve is his ace. Judging by this information, it's either a Pinsir, Scizor, Heracross or Beedrill. However, artwork on the author's Tumblr account implies that it's Heracross.

Flora McGee

She's one of Holly's classmates from Castelia City.

• Ambiguously Gay: She tells her parents that she 'doesn't like boys THAT way' when they suggest she's headed out for a crush.
• Foil: To Raymond. Both are rivals to the main characters. She's a friendly Pokémon League challenging bird, he's a mean coordinator mammal.
• Genki Girl: She's a very hyperactive young girl and always optimistic, even in times of trouble such as being separated from her Pokémon.
• Poisonous Person: She has a Grimer named Nougat on her team, while her personality is as sweet as candy.
• Making a Splash: She has a Water-type Staryu named Konpeito.
• Non-Elemental: Her starter is the Normal-type Minccino (nicknamed Hershey).
• Sweet Tooth: If her candy-themed nicknames are anything to go by, she has this.
• Tomboy and Girly Girl: She's the upbeat perky Girly Girl to Holly's brash and impulsive Tomboy.
• Whole-Costume Reference: Her outfit and hairstyle is based on Rosa from BW2.

Raymond Halpert

Kidd's former school bully from Lumiose City, and his main rival in the contest scene.

• Alpha Bastard: He's a dick to everyone he meets (picks on Axel and Kidd for their species, and is implied to have hit Holly with a flower bouquet).
• Always Someone Better: Even though he thinks of himself as better than Kidd, the latter is a better coordinator (helped by, well, being kind to his Pokémon).
• Cats Are Mean: He's a cat, and primarily defined by his cruelty to everyone around him.
• Fantastic Racism: He's a cat who thinks he's better than others because of his species. When arguing with Kidd, he calls Axel (an elephant) "peanut breath", indirectly insulting him for his species.
• Four Eyes, Zero Soul: He wears glasses and is an asshole to everybody he comes across.
• Making a Splash: He uses the Water-type Marill on his team, and it knows Aqua Jet.
• Non-Elemental: His first chapter has him use the normal-type Eevee.
• Smug Snake: Well, smug cat, but he's a self-centered asshole with a know-it-all attitude.

Axel Gogo

A recurring character whose also doing contests.

• Bare-Fisted Monk: He uses a Fighting-type Machop named Hogan.
• Big Fun: He's a large round elephant, but a genuinely nice guy who does contests for fun.
• Foil: To Raymond. Both are mammals competing in Pokémon Contests and have lost to Kidd. But while Axel is an easy-going nice guy who respects his Pokémon's boundaries, Raymond is a dick who insults both fellow coordinators and his own Pokémon.
• Poisonous Person: He has a Swalot named Pringle on his team.

Dolly Reid

Butch's daughter. She's a kindergartner attends Petalburg Elementary.

• All Dogs Are Purebred: Averted. Her mother is a chihuahua, and her father is a rottweiler, making her a Chiweiler.
• Bratty Half-Pint: In one chapter, she's whiny and hates going to the Pokémon Day Care (mostly because her classmates bug her about her dad being a Gym Leader). Later chapters have her ditch this trait.
• Genki Girl: In later chapters, she's bubbly and cheers on her dad during a gym battle.
• Mister Muffykins: Averted. She's half-chihuahua and a very sweet little girl.
• Precious Puppies: An anthropomorphic variant; she's a sweet little puppy who loves her dad.
• Trademark Favorite Food: Ice cream is her favorite food. She wants to try chocolate, but since she's a dog, it's poison to her.

Totakeke (K.K. Slider)

Debuts in the one-shot "The Waves are Crashing Down". He's a famous musician and was the champion before Apollo beat him.

• The Ace: He's the former champion of the Hoenn region.
• Adaptational Modesty: In the Animal Crossing games, he's completely nude. In the fanfic, he wears a tank top and tight pants, but they're the same color as his fur.
• Banned in China: In-universe example. One of his songs, "Numel by Numel" is banned from Goldenrod Radio, and nobody knows why.
• Cultured Badass: He's a very talented musician who performs for large crowds and was the former Champion.
• Mellow Fellow: Just like his game counterpart, he's a very mildmannered musician. Not even drunk concertgoers or women throwing underwear on stage can change his attitude.
• Non-Elemental: He doesn't specialize in any Pokemon types. He uses the following Pokemon: Leavanny, Rapidash, Crawdaunt, Exploud, Claydol and Mawile.
• Nude-Colored Clothes: He wears a tank top and pair of leggings that are the same color as his fur.
• Signature Mon: Mawile. He has a Key Stone on his guitar, and Mawile is his only Pokemon that can mega evolve.

Sable Nook (neé Able)

Professor Nook's wife, she runs the Pokémon Day Care on Route 117.

• Adaptational Job Change: Instead of working in a clothing store with her sisters, she manages a Pokémon Day Care.
• Adaptation Name Change: Her last name is now Nook, due to her marriage to Tom.
• Adaptation Personality Change: She's more sociable and outgoing than her game counterpart, even brave enough to propose to Tom Nook at a Totakeke concert.
• Green Thumb: She owns the Grass-type Vileplume.
• Happily Married: To Tom Nook. While she lives in a different town than him, she's always happy to have him visit and he's very doting towards her.
• Textile Work Is Feminine: She's more traditionally feminine than most of the cast, and she's an expert at sewing clothes when not working at the Day Care.
• Wacky Marriage Proposal: She's the one who proposes to Tom Nook, and at a K.K. Slider concert of all places.

Deirdre Morikawa

An ex Team Cottage grunt who left when she realized she was in a cult. She's one of Tank's friends from Fortree City.

• Cool Big Sis: In the games, she's a sisterly villager. Here, she's a nice reliable girl who got caught in a bad situation but stood up against her abusive ex-boss and treats the main trio like her younger siblings.
• Crusading Widow: She wants to stop Team Cottage, her former team, after they murdered her boyfriend (the former Fortree City Gym Leader).
• Cult Defector: She's an ex Team Cottage member who left after realizing they were the ones who murdered the former Fortree City gym leader.
• Dark Is Not Evil: She's a former Team Cottage member who owns the Dark-type Mightyena, but both her and her Pokémon are heroic, defending Oldale Town from her ex-group.
• Meaningful Name: Her last name means 'forest river' and is common in the Kyushu region (where Hoenn is based on).
• Tragic Keepsake: Deirdre wears her dead boyfriend's gym badge at all times.

Belladonna

A female Croagunk, and Frank's starter Pokémon.

• Died in Your Arms Tonight: After Zoroark pulls its arm out of her torso, she falls into Frank's arms and dies right on the spot.
• Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Belladonna's cause of death was blood loss from being impaled through the chest by another trainer's Zoroark.
• Meaningful Name: Belladonna is also the name of a poisonous plant, and she was part Poison-type.
• Nice Girl: She's a friendly Pokémon who helps another trainer pick up her glasses, and even after becoming a ghost she's still happy to meet Frank's friends.
• Posthumous Character: Belladonna's been dead for a year prior to the beginning of the main story, and her loss is what drives Frank to insanity.
• The Smurfette Principle: In Frank's original Pokémon team, she was the only girl.

Hornsby Pepper

Tank's older twin brother, and a native to Fortree City.

• Aloof Big Brother: He's Tank's twin brother, and extremely aloof to him (not glad to see him back, dismisses him, snarks when he shuts himself inside due to a depressive episode).
• Nerdy Bully: He's a student obsessed with studying, and acts like a dick to his brother.
• Polar Opposite Twins: Hornsby is a reserved snobby studying-obsessed student, while Tank is an outgoing free-spirited Pokémon trainer.
• School Uniforms are the New Black: He's always seen wearing his school uniform, fitting for a cram school student.

Wolfgang Le Bon

A journalist in the Hoenn region, and Apollo's long-time boyfriend.

• All Gays are Promiscuous: Downplayed. He and Apollo are very sexually active, but they're strictly monogamous.
• Guyliner: His thick eyeliner is one of the first things Apollo notices about him.
• Immoral Journalist: Averted. He's an ethical journalist that cares about telling the truth about any event in town, along with being polite and cordial during interviews.
• Making a Splash: He owns two of the water type Clamperl: one named Jupiter and one named Mars.
• Named After Somebody Famous: He gets his last name from the singer Simon Le Bon.
• Wine Is Classy: Red wine is the drink he's frequently associated with, and he's a dignified journalist.

Laurie Coldstone

A penguin the trio meet in Mauville City's food court.

• Adaptation Name Change: In the games, her name is Sprinkle. Here, she's named Laurie (her name in the French games) Coldstone (an ice cream chain).
• Foreshadowing: Her use of the word 'elite' and mentioning her usage of Ice-types implies she's one of the Elite Four members.
• Unaffected by Spice: She loves spicy food, putting half a bottle of chili oil in her ramen without choking on it.
