    Max

Max

Characters in Max and Ruby
Voiced by: Billy Rosemberg (Seasons 1–3), Tyler Stevenson (Seasons 4–5), Gavin MacIver-Wright (Seasons 6–7)
Ruby's three-year-old little brother, who sometimes thinks of tricks to avoid whatever Ruby wants him to do.
  • Animals Lack Attributes: Max has been seen without his overalls on occasion and he has no visible naughty bits, but naturally this trope is to be expected given the show's target demographic.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: At times, Ruby sees him as a nuisance, usually when Max disobeys what she says or messes with her.
  • Costume Evolution: Max switches from blue overalls in seasons 1-5 to simple blue pants starting in season 6.
  • Does Not Like Spam: As shown in "Max's Breakfast", he hates fried eggs and calls them bad.
  • Expressive Ears: Normally pulls his ears back when he gets mischievous ideas.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The foolish to Ruby's responsible - he's a typical toddler, always wanting to play and run free, whereas she wants him to follow the rules and be refined.
  • Karma Houdini: He always gets away with his schemes, and is sometimes even praised for them. In all fairness, his schemes do often end up helping Ruby in the end.
  • Kiddie Kid: All the 3-year-olds in the show act like infants. As a 4-year-old he starts speaking in complete sentences but can't speak fluent English. He's also the only kid in his class who can't speak fluently.
  • One-Word Vocabulary: In each episode, he often repeats a single word over and over. This starts being phased out in seasons 6-7, as he starts to speak using proper sentences.
  • Rascally Rabbit: An innocent example. He's a scheming tot who loves to mess with Ruby all the time.
  • Silent Snarker: Sometimes expresses annoyance in his facial expressions towards Ruby.
  • Smarter Than You Look: A recurring factor of an episode is that Max, while being a very single-minded three-year-old, is very good at solving problems with what he has in front of him.
  • Smug Smiler: Whenever Max thinks up a plan or thinking of a way to trick Ruby during certain situations.
  • Species Surname: Since his parents are Mr. and Mrs. Bunny, that makes his full name Max Bunny.
  • The Trickster: He likes to be mischievous and play tricks on his sister Ruby.

    Ruby

Ruby

Voiced by: Katie Griffin (Season 1), Samantha Morton (Seasons 1–2), Rebecca Peters (Seasons 3–5), Lydia Page (Seasons 6–7)
Max's seven-year-old older sister. She can be bossy.
  • Adaptational Nice Girl: A mild case. In the animated series, she's a lot kinder and nice around Max, while in the older books, Ruby could act more irritated whenever Max disobeys her.
  • Butt-Monkey: She suffers a lot of mishaps, often inadvertently because of Max, most often during the first and second seasons.
  • Control Freak: Ruby can act bossy and tries to get Max to do things she wants to, even when he clearly doesn't want to, sometimes to the point where she is obsessed with it.
  • Deadpan Snarker: In the later episodes she has a bit of a smart mouth, along with the older Max And Ruby books.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The responsible to Max's foolish. She's always wanting him to keep him in line, while he, being a toddler, wants to goof off and play.
  • Girly Girl: She loves playing with dolls, dressing up as a princess, having tea parties, doing makeovers, and tends to be very soft-spoken.
  • Innocently Insensitive: As a seven year old, this is to be expected. Ruby does mean well, and she genuinely loves Max with all her heart. However, she can sometimes be rather insensitive towards his feelings, though never to the point of malice.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She can be easily annoyed by Max's playfulness but genuinely cares for him.
  • Kid Has a Point: As bossy and overprotective as she can be, Ruby does have a point about watching over Max and wanting what's best for him.
  • Only Sane Woman: She can be the voice of reason when she's watching over Max, since he's a toddler, so she's often the one to point out when he has a bad idea.
  • Ooh, Me Accent's Slipping: In the first two seasons, she was voiced by Samantha Morton, who is British. For the most part, Morton was able to pull off a decent-sounding American accent, but would sometimes slip into her normal British accent a little.
  • Prefers Proper Names: A running gag has her always refer to things (particularly Max's toys) by their full designation, no matter how long or absurd.
  • Puppy Love: She's seven and has a crush on Roger.
  • Species Name: Since her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Bunny, that makes her full name Ruby Bunny.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Girly Girl to Louise's Tomboy. She's more soft-spoken, enjoys having tea parties with her dolls and dressing up as a princess.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: From Seasons 1-5, Ruby is a bit thoughtless towards Max. In seasons 6-7, she becomes a lot more mature as a sister, especially in the first episode, "Max's Preschool", where she heavily encourages Max to be himself.
  • Vague Age: It's difficult to tell how old she is when she can be seen with adult bunnies. Word of God says she is seven.
  • Vocal Dissonance: She has a clearly adultlike voice despite being a young girl.

    Louise

Louise

Voiced by: Julie Lemieux
Ruby's best friend who visits her most of the time. She has a younger cousin named Morris.
  • Best Friend: Louise is always there to support Ruby and her ideas.
  • Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: While she is just as girly, she is more outgoing and dressed up as a prince once.
  • Puppy Love: She's about Ruby's age and, like Ruby, she has a crush on Roger.
  • Those Two Girls: She and Ruby share a lot of screentime whenever an episode focuses on Ruby or the Bunnyscouts.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Tomboy to Ruby's Girly Girl. She's louder and more outgoing than Ruby and didn't seem to mind dressing up as a prince on one occasion.

    Grandma

Grandma

Voiced by: Kay Hawtrey
Ruby and Max's grandmother.
  • Ascended Extra: She only appeared in the books "Bunny Cakes" and "Bunny Money" but is a recurring character in the series. In the later episodes, she ends up as a third main character mainly when the episode involves them traveling.
  • Cool Old Lady: Dresses up as a vampire and a pirate on some occasions.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: The only character with colored eyes.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: She often plays this role to Ruby to cope with her bossiness.
  • Unnamed Parent: She's the mother of one of Max and Ruby's parents, and her name is unknown.

    Roger Piazza

Roger Piazza

Voiced by: Robert Hall
A male bunny who lives in the neighborhood. Ruby and Louise have a crush on him.
  • Canon Foreigner: He's one of the few characters that was created exclusively for the series.
  • Cool Big Bro: He acts like an older brother to Max, since they both like doing the same stuff, much to Ruby's dismay.
  • Lovable Jock: He is an athlete and a nice bunny.
  • Suddenly Speaking: In the earlier episodes, he only says "Uh-huh" or "Nuh-uh" before speaking in full sentences.
  • The Quiet One: In the earlier seasons, Roger doesn't talk that much similar to Max.
  • Vocal Dissonance: He used to be voiced by an actual teenager in the earlier seasons but was given a younger sounding voice in the later episodes.

    Morris

Morris

Voiced by: Cameron Ansell (Seasons 1-5), Nicholas Fry (Seasons 6–7)
Louise's little cousin.
  • Best Friend: Just as Louise is Ruby's best friend, Morris is Max's best friend.
  • Heel–Face Turn: He became Max's best friend after his first appearance in the show. It's very easy to forget that he was once Max's rival.
  • The Rival: To Max in his first appearance in the show. He later becomes best friends with Max, though both still tend to have disagreements with each other.

    Valerie

Valerie

Voiced by: Alexis Walla (Seasons 1-5), Loretta Jafelice (Seasons 6–7)
Ruby's third best friend who sometimes appears along with Louise.
  • Bespectacled Cutie: While all of the bunny characters are adorable, Valerie's glasses add to her cuteness.

    Martha

Martha

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/m&r___martha.png
  • Flat Character: She never really has any character traits, and mostly just exists to be another member of the Bunny Scouts.
  • The Friends Who Never Hang: Unlike Louise and Valerie, Ruby never hangs out with her alone. Martha only appears in episodes where the whole Bunny Scout team is present.
  • Genki Girl: At least in the earlier episodes whenever she speaks. This was toned down when the show got uncancelled where she acted more calm.
  • The Quiet One: She rarely talks, except when she gets excited around the other Bunny Scouts.
  • Recurring Extra: She mainly exists to be window dressing for the Bunny Scouts and events that Ruby plans.

    Baby Huffington

Baby Huffington

  • No Name Given: Everyone just refers to him as "Baby Huffington" or something similar.

    Bunny Scout Leader

Bunny Scout Leader

Voiced by: Unknown

    Grace and Oliver
Max and Ruby's twin baby siblings, who were born in "Max and Ruby and the New Baby".
  • Cousin Oliver: They aren't born until season six.
  • Filthy Fun: "Max and Ruby's Switch" shows that Grace likes playing in the dirt.
  • Hates Baths: As shown in "Max and Ruby's Switch", Grace doesn't like being bathed.
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: Downplayed; they're both babies, so neither can really be considered masculine or feminine yet, but "Max and Ruby's Switch" shows that Grace likes playing in the dirt and with diggers, while Oliver isn't interested in the diggers and likes flowers.
  • Nature Lover: Oliver is shown to like flowers in "Max and Ruby's Switch".
  • Pink Girl, Blue Boy: Grace wears a pink onesie, while Oliver wears a blue onesie.
  • Plot Allergy: Implied in "Max and Ruby's Switch", wherein Grace sneezes when Ruby holds up a flower close to her.
  • Species Surname: Since they're the children of Mr. and Mrs. Bunny, that makes their surname Bunny.
  • Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: Grace has eyelashes to showcase her as the girl.

    Lobster

Lobster

A wind-up toy lobster Max was given by his Uncle Nate and Aunt Claire.
  • Ambiguously Sentient Object: Most of Max's toys are capable of shockingly advanced motions, but if they cause problems then they're usually portrayed as just being obstructive objects. The lobster meanwhile, is the only one who seems to be actively messing with people.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After it spent so long harassing Max, he easily considers parting with it for a toy donation drive. However, after Ruby and Curly Shirley's friendship necklace was put in the box with it by mistake, the lobster escapes the box while bringing the friendship necklace with it seemingly as peace offering. From then on, while it still causes mischief, it typically doesn't escalate much further than simply "joking" about stealing something or chasing Max around as a more mutual game of tag.
  • Obsolete Occupation: Parodied; When the lobster sees Max getting chased around the backyard by Oliver and Grace, it gets sad because it feels like it's been replaced.
  • Perpetual-Motion Monster: The thing's very first appearance is it jumping out of a box fully-wound, and from then on rarely ever needs to be rewound onscreen, often just springing to life on its own. The only exception was after a particularly hard bump caused it to lose its turn-key, where it just falls limp for most up the episode until Ruby finds its key again.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: Nearly every time it shows up, it plays some part in the main conflict of the episode by stealing something or chasing after people. After a certain point, Max starts giving it the stink eye on principle.
  • Sticky Fingers: It has a habit of stealing anything that's left unattended. Usually it'll just wave it around in the air, but sometimes the lobster actively hides it from Max and Ruby.
