Introduced: November 2, 2022 (v3.2 "Akasha Pulses, the Kalpa Flame Rises" [first half])
Voiced by: Hua Ling (Chinese), Yukari Tamura (Japanese), Park Shi-yoon (Korean), Kimberley Anne Campbell (English)

Characters in Genshin Impact: Nahida
Physic of Purity
"The heavens grew eyes to behold the true beauty of the world below, but humans already have eyes to begin with. So, what is it they see when they look at the world not with their eyes, but their vision? You're very smart. Can you figure out what the answer is?"

Rarity: 5★
Element: Dendro
Weapon: Catalyst
Constellation: Sapientia Oromasdis, the Wisdom of Ahura Mazda

A mysterious girl who guides Traveler through a crisis involving the Akademiya harvesting dreams. Her wisdom and insight into the inner workings of Sumeru, as well as her habit of appearing and disappearing on a whim, were enough clues for the Traveler to easily identify her as "Lesser Lord Kusanali" Buer, the Dendro Archon—or at least her illusory form used to overcome the Sages' strictures on her, being physically imprisoned in the Sanctuary of Surasthana atop the Akademiya. Sympathizing with her plight, the Traveler resolves to free her and help her overcome her immense self-doubt and assume her rightful place in Sumeru, even if it means going up against the might of the Akademiya and the Sages... to say nothing of their backers from such familiar foes as the Fatui.

    A–G
  • Admiring the Abomination: When facing the deified Scaramouche, she considers it a commendable technological achievement, even calling it the culmination of human wisdom.
  • Affectionate Nickname: According to Yae Miko, "Lesser Lord Kusanali" is a nickname the people of Sumeru gave to her as a term of endearment. See Lost in Translation for details.
  • All-Loving Heroine: Nahida loves Sumeru's people a great deal, and takes care to protect everyone from danger. When the Akademiya started up their dream harvesting plan, she was immediately on the scene trying to save her people from it, and when Il Dottore hijacked the consciousnesses of many innocent people, she removed the brainwashing even at the cost of blowing her cover. Her protectiveness even extends all the way to Aaru Village, where she not only tends to the Village Keepers, but also uses them as conduits to help out the villagers in times of need, such as using her power to protect them from earthquakes, despite not technically being their god. She's also been known to teach children facts about the world in an effort to lift their spirits, and is even willing to give Scaramouche a second chance.
  • All There in the Manual: At the end of the Sumeru Archon Quest, Rukkhedevata's consciousness is completely erased, and all recollection of her in both written records and living memory have been changed to refer to Nahida or some other cause. This effect is so complete that even Nahida's in-game biographies have been altered. Only a small minority of players who are well-versed on the lore at the time of Nahida's banner but pull and use her anyways will know the truth. Fortunately, most databases include both biographies, including the official HoYowiki, so every player can read the anecdotes there and learn what really happened.
  • Amnesia Missed a Spot: Albeit a very, very faint spot. After Rukkhadevata's erasure from Irminsul, most of the Greater Lord's impact on history was instead attributed to other factors, with the most common go-to being that Nahida was the one who lived what was formerly the Greater Lord's life, having merely suffered amnesia during the Khaenri'ah Cataclysm. One thing that couldn't be smoothed over in this manner was the feelings Rukkhadevata engendered in Nahida. With no appropriate alternative to reassign them to, they instead create a faint sense of longing in Nahida's subconsciousness. There are times when Nahida is able to notice the discrepancy, but with nothing besides those emotions to go on there's little she can do except move on.
  • Amplifier Artifact: Her third and fifth Constellation upgrades, The Shoot of Conscious Attainment and The Leaves of Enlightening Speech, add three levels to, respectively, her Skill and Burst.
  • Animal Motifs: Nahida refers to herself as "just a little bird" many times over during her communication with the Traveler. Her second Story Quest also begins and ends with a shot of a bird and its nest.
  • Area of Effect: Nahida's Elemental Burst, Illusory Heart, summons the Shrine of Maya, a phantasmal greenhouse which lasts for at least fifteen seconds (with a duration extension if there is at least one Hydro unit in the party) and increases the damage and reduces the cooldown time of Tri-Karma Purification if there is respectively at least one Pyro and one Electro unit in the party. These three buffs will be enhanced if there are at least two units of one of the three aforementioned elements. Her first-Ascension passive, The Seed of Stored Knowledge, adds the ability to increase the Elemental Mastery of allies within the field (worth a quarter of that of the ally with the highest such stat, to a maximum of 250 points), while her first Constellation upgrade, The Seed of Stored Knowledge, automatically adds one stack to the three main buffs, hence guaranteeing that they will be activated even if the party lacks one character of the related elements, and that bringing even just one Pyro, Electro, or Hydro unit along with Nahida will upgrade the related buffs.
  • Authority in Name Only: While she is meant to be the god of Sumeru, in reality she is locked away and the Sages who truly run things near refuse to acknowledge her existence.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: Out of the seven Archons, she is only 500 years old and explicitly called the youngest of the Archons. While Ei and Focalors both became Archons at roughly the same time as Nahida, they had both been around long before that, while Nahida on the other hand became an Archon the day she was born.
  • Bad Powers, Good People:
    • She has the ability to override any consciousness connected to an Akasha Terminal and replace it with her own. However, she only uses it in periods of great distress when there is no other choice, hence she simply opted to possess Katheryne, who is an autonomous puppet made in Snezhnaya, in normal circumstance.
    • As the Dendro Archon, she has primary access to Irminsul, essentially giving her root access to reality. If so inclined, she most likely is able to Ret-Gone people out of Teyvat and rewrite history to her liking.
  • Badass Adorable: Nahida is a cute little girl with some mean skills controlling her Dendro powers as well as a far greater understanding of how the world operates, as expected of the Dendro Archon and God of Wisdom.
  • Badass in Distress: Midway through the Sumeru Archon Quest, Dottore cuts off her ability to Body Surf lest she continue to be a thorn on his side, more or less trapping her into her physical body encased in a crystal orb in the Sanctuary of Surasthana and with no other way to further communicate with the Traveler, but not before she allows the Traveler to temporarily switch bodies with her and discover his plan to turn Scaramouche into the Sages' new God of Wisdom, as well as hinting at them to seek help from the people of the Great Red Sand.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Dainsleif's preview for the Sumeru Archon Quest described her as allowing Sumeru's scholars to "push for folly," which would give one the impression of her being apathetic as a ruler. Come the arc, however, it is revealed that she's not so much neglectful as much as insecure over standing in the shadow of her illustrious predecessor Rukkhadevata, to say nothing of the Akademiya actively pretending she does not even exist.
  • Be Yourself: Rukkhadevata's advice to her after they reached the main core of Irminsul and meeting Rukkhadevata herself is that she doesn't need to truly mimic the Greater Lord, and assures her that she will eventually blossom into a far better Archon than Rukkhadevata was.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: As much as she's a total sweetheart and absolutely adorable, post-imprisonment she shows she can be pretty ruthless and daring when she needs to be.
    • In the denouement of the Sumeru Archon Quest, Dottore unexpectedly intervenes by putting the Traveler and Paimon into a Forced Sleep and attempting to take the Electro Gnosis in Nahida's possession by force. Her response is to threaten to destroy it and invoke the wrath of the Heavenly Principles, forcing him to comply with her terms. Said terms are to erase all his other segments throughout Teyvat, massively diminishing the threat he poses. This stunt actually earns Dottore's respect, and he ultimately takes the deal. Later, the Wanderer reveals that Nahida gave him approval to fully neutralize the threat Dottore could pose to Sumeru, including killing him if necessary.
    • When she confronts the responsible party in her first Story Quest, she flatly states that pulling Moseis/Beynuni's mind out of the Akasha and putting it back in his body instead of letting it disperse into nothingness is less out of compassion than it is to ensure that he will be held accountable for his actions. This same logic also applies to her decision to exile the Sages.
    • Perhaps the biggest one is how Nahida chose to burn the corrupted Irminsul with the Pyro Gnosis given by Mavuika to kill Dottore's remaining clone, including the one who was responsible for corrupting Irminsul in the first place. To add just how ruthless Nahida could become, she decided to take advantage of the whole thing to sever her connection with both Irminsul and the Heavenly Principles, as a way to free Teyvat's information from being manipulated and censored by them; she even managed to make the Four Shades, sans Shade of Space, to follow through with her plan via Loophole Abuse by using Aaru to create a new way for Teyvat to store information, something that genuinely amazed them. Her final conversation with Dottore's final clone makes it clear she's not afraid to resort to extreme ways to get what she wants for wisdom and Sumeru's protection, but she will never stoop as low as Dottore did.
  • Big Good: For the Sumeru Archon Quest, where she uses her capacity as the Dendro Archon to guide, protect, and save the Traveler and her people as much as she can from the schemes of the Sages and the Fatui. She's also been known to teach children facts about the world in an effort to lift their spirits.
  • A Birthday, Not a Break: She has to deal with the Sages' samsara and the near-death of one of her followers during Sabzeruz Festival, her birthday celebration. At the end of it all, Nahida remarks that it was the most exhausting birthday she's ever had.
  • Black Comedy: Played with in the English dub. One of her voice lines for the held form of her Skill is a chirpy "Everyone hold hands!", something one would typically say to keep people safe.
  • Bluff the Impostor: Meta example. The held form of her Skill can pick up any harvestable plant in the overworld, unless they're a disguise—a sign it's a Whopperflower, which will remain on the floor. This is one of the few reliable ways to tell plants and disguises apart.
  • Breaking Old Trends:
    • All three of the Archons introduced before her are old-guard deities that survived the Archon Wars, with Barbatos and Morax being members of the original Seven. Nahida on the other hand is explicitly the youngest of the Seven.
    • She's the first Archon whose questline ends with her taking her place as the head of her nation. Both Barbatos and Morax have let humans take control of theirs, while Beelzebul has a puppet ruling in her stead.
    • She is the first archon with light-colored hair, followed by Furina.
  • Broken Tears: Nahida is reduced to crying in heartbreak after she reluctantly erased the memory of Rukkhadevata, her past incarnation and creator who she looks up to, in order to cleanse Irminsul of its corruption that has been manifesting in Sumeru as Eleazar and the Withering.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Nahida's dynamic with the Wanderer as a patient and smiling mentor helping the cynical reformed criminal redeem himself and express his better nature.
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: Subverted. While Nahida is meant to be the Dendro Archon, she has been forcibly made into an authority in name only. Double Subverted when she finally ascends as the ruling Archon of Sumeru at the end of its Archon Quest.
  • Caged Bird Metaphor: When the Traveler chases after her early in the Sumeru Archon Quest, they pass by a bird in a cage, which vanishes after the Traveler spots her illusion behind them and changes direction to run after her. There is also official art of her being trapped in a birdcage, and in one of her idle animations, she uses her powers to create an illusion of a bird being set free from a cage.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Nahida simply cannot ignore people in need. No matter their background, if they need help then she will do anything and everything in her power to do so, whatever the lengths that will require her to go to.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: While her wisdom is unquestionable, her solitary confinement, as well as her lack of contact with the outside world beyond appearing in dreams and possessing others, means her social knowledge and common sense are on the low end, which occasionally makes her look as childish as her appearance suggests. Best showcased when she suggests the Traveler and Paimon take a "dook-dook" to relieve their worries.
  • Company Cross-References: Nahida bears many similarities to Theresa Apocalypse of Honkai Impact 3rd.
    • Aesthetic-wise, both are centuries-old characters with childlike appearances and white hair, as well as share the same Chinese and Japanese voice actresses. Nahida's color palette is also similar to that of Theresa's Verdant Sky battlesuitnote , and her hairstyle is similar to that of Twilight Paladinnote .
    • Both Theresa and Nahida hold high positions in their respective educational institutions (respectively, the principal of St. Freya Academy and from Chapter 28 onwards as the current Overseer of Schicksal, and the Dendro Archon and nominal ruler of the Akademiya) and helps the protagonists.
    • The circumstances of Theresa and Nahida's origins also share similarities. Theresa is a clone of Kallen Kaslana, who died 500 years ago, and looks like a child version of the original but is treated as her own person. Nahida is the creation and reincarnation of Rukkhadevata, who died during the Cataclysm 500 years ago. When Nahida finally meets the remnants of Rukkhadevata's consciousness, the only difference between the two is the latter having glowing green highlights in her hair.
    • The two of them both have powers related to dreams, Nahida because she can enter dreams as part and parcel of her powers as God of Wisdom, and Theresa because Honkai actually "think" by "dreaming", which gives Vishnu's Honkai-devouring powers the ability to also consume dream-spaces such as those created for Project Stigma.
  • Conditioned to Accept Horror: Locked away from the world since the day she was born, Nahida has endured centuries of being ignored by the people of Sumeru at best and denounced by the Akademiya at worst, having to live in Rukkhadevata's shadow. Being the studious learner she is, she's aware of the standards she's being measured against, and though she has managed to touch and save the lives of a number of people, she has sadly concluded that people are right in calling her too weak and inexperienced to succeed Rukkhadevata, lamenting her own existence as pointless. Midway through the Sumeru Archon Quest, she relates to the Traveler and Paimon a happy dream she had where everyone showered her with love during the Sabzeruz festival, and is confused when the two regard her with sadness at how she can only enjoy such simple pleasures in her dreams.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: "Arc," to be precise. In contrast to the three previous Archons, Nahida is the first one to be openly despised by her people, who prefer her predecessor Rukkhadevata. In particular, she's a mirror image of the Raiden Shogun/Ei:
    • Both inherited their positions after the previous holders died during the Cataclysm, but where Ei (or at least the Shogun puppet) ruled with an iron fist, Nahida was shunned by her supposed direct subordinates.
    • Both are largely isolated from the outside world, only occasionally interacting with it via unique methods, but while Ei willingly locked herself away in order to achieve full stasis (apart from the occasional intervention using the Shogun puppet's body), Nahida was placed under house arrest in all but name yet wishes to reach out to the outside world and grow, even if she can only visit people through their dreams or using illusory forms.
    • The office of Electro Archon was secretly held by two gods, Makoto and Ei. Meanwhile, the office of Dendro Archon has been openly held by two technically different gods (at least prior to Rukkhadevata getting erased from living memory).
    • Where Ei at least had some experience co-ruling Inazuma alongside Makoto, Nahida was effective a newborn when the Sages first found her, and thus was found lacking as Archon.
    • Ei shares her body with the Raiden Shogun, her creation, while Nahida is a completely separate entity from her creator Rukkhadevata.
    • While Ei is considered to be the Brawn to Makoto's Brains, Nahida's strength relies less on combat, and more on her wits.
    • Both of their Archon Quests have the Traveler end up fighting against a god with a mechanical body from Inazuma, but in Inazuma the Traveler opposes the Raiden Shogun, while in Sumeru, Nahida helps the Traveler take down Shouki no Kami.
    • Their treatment of the Fatui Harbinger that becomes a Trounce Domain boss in their respective Archon Quests are also opposites. Both Signora and Scaramouche were defeated by the Traveler, but the Shogun puppet executed Signora without the slightest hesitation, while Nahida chooses to spare and even rehabilitate Scaramouche.
    • For that matter, their treatment of Scaramouche also differs, and in turn, how Scaramouche viewed them are also polar opposites. While Ei abandoned him in a misguided attempt at granting him freedom, for which he grew to resent her, Nahida welcomed him despite his attempt at usurping her position as God of Wisdom and helped rehabilitate him, leading to him developing respect for the Archon such that she is one of the few people around whom he tones down his snark.
  • Crazy-Prepared:
    • Whatever power it is she used on the Village Keepers to both keep them calm and allow them to help Aaru Village in times of need, it doesn't appear to need her to personally take control. Despite Nahida being cut off from jumping bodies via the Akasha by Il Dottore, Khalil still uses the powers she bestowed upon him in order to generate a barrier and shield his adoptive grandson Isak, the Traveler and company, and Rahman's band from a collapsing sand dune.
    • During the third Archon Quest Interlude, she stored a record of Scaramouche's history disguised as a fairy tale to protect it from any form of tampering on Irminsul, allowing her, Paimon, and the Wanderer to eventually regain their memories of the latter.
  • Critical Hit Class: Her second Constellation upgrade, The Root of All Fulness, allows Burn, Bloom, Hyperbloom, and Burgeon reaction damage on enemies marked with Seeds of Skandha to score critical hits (with a fixed 20% Rate and 100% Damage), buffs the Critical Rate and Damage of Lunar-Bloom reactions (by, respectively, 10% and 20%), and allows Quicken, Aggravate, and Spread reactions to inflict a 30% Defense penalty for eight seconds.
  • Cruel Mercy: Nahida firmly believes that wrongdoers should live and learn from their mistakes, whether they like it or not, and that death is simply too easy a way out of facing consequences. This is precisely why she chose to permanently exile the traitorous Sages to Avidya Forest at the end of the Sumeru Archon Quest, as well as preserve Moseis/Beynuni's soul towards the end of her first Story Quest. That said, she averts this with Il Dottore, who was both far too dangerous to be left alive and physically incapable of changing his personality, and leaves him to die as Irminsul burns.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • As soon as she enters the battle against Scaramouche, she traps him in the same Lotus-Eater Machine the Sages used to harvest dreams, repeating his and the Traveler's fight 168 times until she was confident that the Traveler could win. From there, the mini-Akasha machine she built prior to the battle proceeds to rip him apart, with a player quick enough to gather energy for it being able to tear him down in just three blasts of her power.
    • The same thing also happens with the battle against Dottore; as soon as she enters the Irminsul, she easily hijacks most of Dottore's control of it because of her nature as its avatar, meaning she has a far better understanding of Irminsul than Dottore ever will. With her directly assisting both Traveler and Wanderer to fight him, his power continuously depletes as both of them proceed to easily shred him to pieces with Elemental Burst in quick succession until he resorts to destroying the place they are all standing in to kill all of them, which is when Nahida uses the power of the Pyro Gnosis to burn the whole Irminsul down, taking Dottore along with it.
  • The Cutie: Nahida is arguably the most heart-meltingly adorable of the Archons. She plays on a swing and makes paper dolls with Dendro magic in her idle animations, her attack animations include jumping up and down to generate Dendro attacks as though she were playing hopscotch with her enemies, striking various idle poses, and forming a picture frame with her hands, she has a tendency to be naïve with some of her metaphors coupled with her Cloudcuckoolander tendencies, and despite horrid treatment from the Sages and their Fatui backers, refuses to stop helping Sumeru.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: Like Rukkhadevata, Nahida can trade her "time" and "growth" for the power to perform feats normally beyond her abilities. In exchange, she will age backwards, which can be dangerous if she goes too far, which is a particular risk given that she doesn't have anywhere near the same amount of "growth" to spare that Rukkhadevata once did; trying to fill in for the shattered Fire Seed when helping Apep would likely have devolved her back into a twig or blade of grass if the Dendro Lifeforms hadn't offered themselves up instead.
  • Deal with the Devil: Interestingly, she's on both ends when dealing with Il Dottore at the end of the Sumeru Archon Quest. When the Doctor subtly threatens to hurt her if she doesn't hand over the Electro Gnosis, she forces him to back off and comply with her demands by threatening to destroy it and potentially bring down the wrath of Celestia upon him and the Fatui, before having him kill all of his other segments in exchange for the Electro Gnosis (thus mitigating any threat he may pose to Sumeru in the near future). In turn, the Doctor offers her secret knowledge that even she is not privy to in exchange for Nahida's own Gnosis, which she accepts.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: If one wonders what Klee's parenting looked like were it abusive, Nahida's situation is eerily similar to that, with none of the former's humorous context and situations behind it, essentially making it a parallel example Played for Drama.
  • Defusing the Tyke-Bomb: She's in the process of doing this with Scaramouche, now the Wanderer, having taken him in after his defeat. Nahida tasks him with looking for information within Irminsul, ensuring that he would discover for himself the truth about his past and how Dottore manipulated him. She also assists him with regaining his lost memories, offers him a place in Sumeru while encouraging him to make amends for his past sins, and teaches him that not all relationships are transactional in nature and whether or not he is useful doesn't determine his value as a person. She eventually enrolls him as a student at the Vahumana Darshan, encouraging him to use his studies as a way to work through his issues and make sense of his past.
  • Determinator: After Paimon and the Traveler unravel the mystery of the Sabzeruz Samsara, she entrusts them with ending it before rushing beyond the boundaries of the dream world to find Dunyarzad's dream, where she uses all her strength to sustain the woman's weak and fading mind. Her efforts sustain her most faithful follower's consciousness long enough for the two to find Nilou and bring the dream to its conclusion, and Dunyarzad even managed to attend Nilou's dance in the end. Rukkhadevata's lingering consciousness praises her for this trait when they meet in Irminsul, noting that even she wasn't this emotionally strong and expressing faith that Nahida could become an even greater Archon than her.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Nahida being shunned just for not living up to her predecessor makes her an allegory for parental unfavoritism—in this case, a younger child in a strict household being unfavorably compared to their older, more academically proficient sibling. This situation is especially rampant in many Asian households, with Sumeru being partially based off of many South Asian cultures.
  • Dream Walker: While she was locked away in the Sanctuary of Surasthana, she learnt about the outside world through entering the minds and exploring the dreams of her citizens by Irminsul, and also demonstrates this ability in her Character Demo. Dunyarzard is Nahida's devoted worshiper because she visited her in her dreams when she was young to offer comfort from her illness. She played a role in the creation of the extremely lifelike mirages during the Summertime Odyssey event.
  • Dream Weaver: Towards the end of the "Summer Fantasia" event, she implies that she has the ability to shape people's dreams and manifest them in reality, given that she describes the Fatui's machine as a power "related" to hers.
  • Dub-Induced Plot Hole: While her title of "Lesser Lord" makes sense in relation to the Greater Lord Rukkhadevata, this stops being the case after the Sumeru Archon Quest with the latter being erased from Irminsul. This is also a case of the original Chinese characters of her title being Lost in Translation, as it could also be translated into the more affectionate "Little Lord."
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Despite being Sumeru's current Archon, the Akademiya is clinging to the memory of Rukkhadevata, to the point that Azar forced Nilou to stop celebrating her birthday.
  • Early-Bird Cameo:
    • Nahida's title, "Kusanali," was offhandedly mentioned as early as v1.4, during the "Invitation of Windblume" event, when Sayid, a visiting scholar of the Akademiya, compared the Windblume Festival to Sabzeruz Festival, the celebration of her birthday. In the permanent content, Kusanali first gets mentioned in v2.0 by Vahid, a merchant in Ritou, before Yae Miko confirms it to be her name during the denouement of the Inazuma Archon Quest. She has a voiced cameo before the rest of the Sumeru cast during the "Summer Fantasia" event, through intercepting the Traveler's communications with Venti.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: After being confined and despised by the Akademiya for half a millennium, the Traveler and their friends finally free her from the Sages and help her assume her rightful place as the ruling Archon of Sumeru at the end of its Archon Quest. She finally gets to celebrate her birthday, the Sabzeruz Festival, in the "Chromatic Ode of Candies and Roses" event of v5.1 (October 2024).
  • Earthy Barefoot Character: While all of the Archons are Magical Barefooters when acting in their capacity as deities, Nahida as the Dendro Archon who is heavily attuned to nature and life wears toe and heel exposing foot-wraps in her regular attire, so that her feet are always in contact with the earth.
  • Elemental Personalities: The Dendro Archon is an incredibly gentle soul, and despite her wisdom, remains quite childlike in nature.
  • Everybody Knew Already: Nahida pops up in extraordinary circumstances in such a conspicuous fashion that even Paimon is able to guess that she is the Dendro Archon.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: Nahida has pupils shaped like white four-petalled flowers rather than standard pupils, much like Hu Tao.
  • Extreme Doormat: Nahida, who was born at the same time her predecessor Rukkhadevata died, was confined by the then-reigning Sages when they deemed her lacking in knowledge. Her relative youth and inexperience, combined with the widespread Hero Worship of her predecessor, meant that when the Akademiya started actively scrubbing out her existence, she took it lying down, not once contesting the Sages over major policies such as usage of the Akasha. It wasn't until she sealed off her own mind to prevent Il Dottore from getting into it via the Akasha that she was finally able to hear her inner voice, and has difficulty sorting out her own feelings in that moment of introspection. When the Traveler wakes her up, she confesses that she felt angry at the injustices dealt to her for the first time in her life, and from that point on is more assertive with her actions.
  • Fatal Flaw: Borderline self-sacrificial altruism. While an Archon must put their people's needs first, Nahida in particular can seem uncomfortably quick to make decisions that put the greatest risks and consequences upon herself. This is likely not helped by the damage the Akademiya did to her self-esteem over the centuries of isolation in the Sanctuary of Surasthana.
  • Figure It Out Yourself: She offers hints to Paimon and the Traveler while they're investigating the Sabzeruz samsara, but refuses to tell them the solution outright. This is justified, as the "solution" is very complicated and involves the fact that their minds are literally wired into the problem. Having all that information dumped on them at once could seriously damage their minds, so they need to figure it out at their own pace.
  • Final First Hug: Is on the receiving end of one from Rukkhadevata as she erases the latter from Irminsul, made all the more tragic by the fact that it's the first hug she's ever received in her entire life.
  • Foreshadowing: Much like how the two types of Large Electro Slimes (purple and yellow) foreshadowed that there were two Electro Archons (Makoto and Ei), whenever Large Dendro Slimes are low on HP, they create smaller Dendro Slimes, foreshadowing that Nahida was created by Rukkhadevata before her death.
  • Friend-or-Idol Decision: After finally meeting Rukkhadevata, Nahida is crushed when she realizes she needs to permanently erase the Greater Lord's lingering consciousness to cleanse Irminsul of Forbidden Knowledge, with the side effect that all of Teyvat will also forget her.
  • Friend to All Children: Her third Character Story and Dunyarzad's testimony show that she looks out for the children of Sumeru, listening to, talking to, and playing with them in their dreams and resolving any internal distress. Isak is also willing to dress up as her in order to pay her back for using Khalil as a host to take care of him as part of Alhaitham's plan to free her from the Sages.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: She is quite skilled with the use of machinery and is an expert in telecommunications as well.
    • During the latter half of the "Summertime Odyssey" event, she was able to hack into the Dodocommunication Device to speak directly to both the Traveler and Paimon (in lieu of Venti).
    • Upon her rescue she develops a Paimon-sized construct called a Neo Akasha Terminal in just two days for their preparation to take on Scaramouche and prevent his birth as the new God of Wisdom.
    • Albedo later deduces that Nahida was the one the who crafted the device that was able to take Durin's Abyssal power and convert it into energy that Columbina could harness to combat Rerir.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation:
    • Nahida has never (physically) explored the outside world, due to being confined within the Sanctuary of Surasthana for 500 years since birth due to the Sages' machinations. However, there's nothing stopping the player from pulling Nahida from the gacha and playing as her in open world exploration before even the Sumeru Archon Quest. They can even have her take part in the plot in rescuing herself from the clutches of the Akademiya and the Fatui if they so desire.
    • Despite the Wanderer's insistence on wanting to become Nahida's personal helper and does occasionally assist her at times, the two have very little synergy with one another, as Anemo and Dendro have no elemental reactions with each other, and Nahida's Burst is not enhanced by Anemo.
    • Zigzagged in regards to the Sabzeruz Festival when it comes to her birthday, October 27:
      • In the Sumeru Archon Quest, there is nothing stopping players from completing the first two acts before and after the date, both acts having been released in August 2022.
      • Zigzagged even further in the "Chromatic Ode of Candies and Roses" event, where there isn't anything preventing players from playing before and after the date (as long as it is during the event's duration itself), but the festival itself in the third act was released on that day so if players started it on that day it is inverted.
  • Gamer Chick: Not obvious at first glance, but looking closer at her attack animations, she is pressing keyboard buttons as if playing a DanceDanceRevolution-style game for her Normal Attack, while her charged attack has her drag a selection with a mouse cursor to deal damage.
  • Genius Sweet Tooth: She's exceptionally insightful, and her favorite food and the basis for her signature dish is Candied Ajilenakh Nut.
  • Getting Eaten Is Harmless: During her second Archon Quest, using the power of the Fire Seed, she, the Traveler, Paimon, and the elemental lifeforms land safely in Apep's insides when the dragon consumes them to heal her. It helps that Apep used to be able to host a thriving ecosystem inside it.
  • Girl in the Tower: She's been locked away in the Sanctuary of Surasthana at the top of Sumeru City for hundreds of years, something Paimon decries as house arrest. She does have means of getting around her isolation, such as entering people's dreams, using the Akasha, and possessing Katheryne, but the primary reason she doesn't try harder to leave is because of her low self-esteem with regards to being able to fill Rukkhadevata's shoes.
  • God-Emperor: By the end of the Sumeru Archon Quest, Nahida becomes the official ruler of Sumeru.
  • God of Knowledge: The Dendro Archon is also referred to as the God of Wisdom and is noted as being the reason for Sumeru's specialty in knowledge. As the current Dendro Archon, Nahida lives up to the title as she is more than willing to share her wisdom with others, and her advice often proves helpful. Nahida is also connected with the Akashic Records of the world, Irminsul, from which she can easily look for information on everything that originates from the world.
  • Good Is Not Dumb: Il Dottore underestimated Nahida because of her kind and sweet nature, but as he soon finds out, Nahida is the God of Wisdom for a reason.
  • Good Is Not Soft: The Wanderer going to Nod-Krai to settle his grudge against Il Dottore is understandable, but he also mentions that Nahida allowed it to ensure that the Doctor will never become a threat to Sumeru again, tacitly giving him approval to assassinate the mad scholar should it come down to that.
  • God Is Good: Is shown to be nothing but helpful to the Traveler and her people, both directly and indirectly, from guiding the Traveler to end the Sabzeruz samsara, using her powers to prevent Dunyarzad from dying as much as she can, covering for the Traveler when Il Dottore ambushes them with a brainwashed crowd and repairing the crowd's consciousness, using scholars exiled to Aaru Village as conduits for her power to protect its residents from earthquakes, and accompanying and giving advice to lonely children, all the while being shunned by most of Sumeru's society.
  • Good Wears White: Her color scheme is primarily white with green elements that reflect her Dendro powers, and also reflects her origins as a branch of Irminsul unsullied by forbidden knowledge.
  • Grand Theft Me: She is capable of hijacking people's consciousnesses using the Akasha. She's only willing to use this power outside extenuating circumstances on Katheryne, who's a bionic puppet.
  • Greater-Scope Paragon: Nahida plays this role for much of the Nod-Krai Archon Quest, as while she never personally appears, it was she who sent the Wanderer there when she caught wind of Il Dottore's renewed activities, Dori returns to Sumeru to specifically notify her about the disaster unfolding in Nod-Krai so that she can coordinate with the rest of the Seven to mount a proper counteroffensive if need be, and Albedo deduces that she made the device that transmuted Durin's Abyssal powers into power Columbina could harness to fight Rerir.
  • Guile Heroine: By her own admission, Nahida's strengths lie not in combat, but in wits, though she considers herself inferior to Rukkhadevata. Nevertheless, the Greater Lord disagrees, even thinking Nahida will become even greater than her in time. She has proven her chops by beautifully outplaying Scaramouche and Il Dottore.

    H–W
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: On paper, her powers over dreams and wisdom don't seem combat-worthy, especially when compared to some of the more flashier elemental powers displayed by other characters. In practice, said powers can do quite a lot in the face of combat, namely trapping the opponent in a mental "Groundhog Day" Loop, recording the combat data, and using the accumulated knowledge to take down the enemy in the real world.
  • Herd-Hitting Attack:
    • Tri-Karma Purification deals Dendro-elemental damage on enemies marked with Seeds of Skandha whenever at least one of them is hit with Dendro-related reactions (with at least 2.5-seconds intervals), with damage scaling off of a sum of fractions of her Attack and Elemental Mastery stats. Her fourth-ascension passive, Awakening Elucidated, increases its damage and Critical Rate by, respectively, 0.1% and 0.03% for every Elemental Mastery point Nahida has above 200 (to a maximum of 80% and 24%, hence at least 800 points).
    • Her sixth Constellation upgrade, The Fruit of Reason's Culmination, allows Nahida to trigger Tri-Karma Purification: Karmic Oblivion on marked enemies whenever she hits at least one of them with the combo or charged forms of her Normal Attack, Akara, while her Burst is active, dealing Dendro-elemental damage worth the sum of twice her Attack stat and four times her Elemental Mastery. Unlike the "regular" variant, it can be triggered every 0.2 second, but she is limited to ten seconds or five more instances before she has to trigger her Burst anew to be able to use them again.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: During her second Story Quest, she intended to use all of her powers to cure Apep, which would render her no larger than a blade of grass and destroy all her memories. She was prevented from doing this by Apep's creations sacrificing themselves in her stead.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Nahida has poor self-esteem, referring to herself as the "moon" to Rukkhadevata's "sun". She feels that she's a fraud of an Archon, too young and weak to live up to the Greater Lord's legacy, which makes the circumstances around her true identity all the more tragic, as she is the reincarnation of Rukkhadevata, created to save Irminsul by deleting her lingering consciousness after she contracted pollution from forbidden knowledge during the Cataclysm.
  • Hero Worship: She idolizes Rukkhadevata and dreams of matching up to her as an Archon one day. Also deconstructed, as this, together with the Akademiya's continued obsession with the Greater Lord's memory, meant that whenever people dismissed or badmouthed her she just took it lying down, silently struggling alone to find a way to better herself even as the neglect and abuse piled up over the centuries. While Rukkhadevata's erasure from Irminsul mostly wipes away this trait, those feelings are so deeply ingrained that Nahida can still tell that something ought to be there, even if she can no longer tell what.
  • Hidden Depths: Nahida's "Toy Box" story shows that she is skilled at woodwork, having made her own toys with wood, some tools and instructions from the Akasha when the Akademiya refused to give her any.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: Midway through the Sumeru Archon Quest, Nahida has a dream of being showered with love during the Sabzeruz Festival, which is her birthday. The Traveler and Paimon can only look at her sadly when they think about how terrible it is that she can really only find that kind of happiness in her dreams.
  • Idle Animation: Nahida's animation where she sits on a swing is unique in that she'll remain in it indefinitelynote  until the player is no longer idle.
  • Ignored Expert: She's been trying to get the Akademiya to stop directly connecting to the Irminsul on account of its diseased state which she suspects to come from the corruption of Rukkhadevata's lingering consciousness, as doing so has a high chance of turning people insane. No points for guessing how the Akademiya responded.
  • I'm Crying, but I Don't Know Why: She asks the Traveler why she's crying after erasing Rukkhadevata's lingering consciousness in Irminsul, as doing so removed all trace of the Greater Lord's existence from the Teyvat and its inhabitants.
  • Immune to Flinching: The held form of her Skill has an enhanced interruption resistance.
  • Implicit Prison: While not explicitly under house, she is effectively unable to leave the Sanctuary of Surasthana apart from through Telepathy. The third act of the Sumeru Archon Quest shows that she's kept in an energy bubble.
  • Interface Spoiler: Unlike Venti and Zhongli, whose offices are only revealed within their respective Archon Quests, Nahida's profile and story entry list "Gnosis" instead of "Vision" even before the Sumeru Archon Quest.
  • Invocation: Noted in her Elemental Burst Voicelines.
    "Make yourselves at home!"
    "Share in my knowledge!"
    "The Temple of Wisdom!"
  • Irony: The Sages loathed her because she isn’t Rukkhadevata; as it turns out, Nahida is both the creation and reincarnation of Rukkhadevata, described by her as her "incarnation in the next samsara" who she created from a branch of Irminsul.
  • Karmic Jackpot: One whose payout has been half a millennium in the making. In spite of all that has been done to her, Nahida remained kindhearted the whole time and continued to intervene in people's lives for the better in little ways that only she could. She is rewarded big time throughout the Archon Quest by a number of people she helped repaying her kindness at critical moments, which culminates in her rescue.
    • When a young Dunyarzad suffered from a flareup of Eleazar, Nahida visited her in her dreams and kept her company, telling her about the world's wonders to help take her mind off her pain. Years later, Dunyarzad sponsored the latest Sabzeruz Festival in the Grand Bazaar, which she invited the Traveler and Paimon to attend when she caught wind of their interest in the Dendro Archon. Thus, when the Sages start harvesting dreams that same night, they are caught in the plot as well, and eventually meet the Lesser Lord herself when she came to investigate. The young woman Nahida once helped ended up connecting her with the people who would become her most trustworthy allies, and who would come to save her.
    • Nahida took pity on the Village Keepers, Akademiya scholars banished to Aaru Village after they were driven mad by exposure to "Divine Knowledge," putting them into a trance to calm them and minimizing the harm they could do to both themselves and the villagers. Through them, she also helped protect Aaru from earthquakes; local stories tell how the Keepers kneaded Dendro energy into the ground and completely negated any damage the quakes could have caused, winning the scholars acceptance with the villagers where they used to be resented upon for being foisted onto them by the Akademiya. When the Sages had them kidnapped, Candace asked the visiting Traveler and their allies to investigate their disappearance, leading to them and Rahman's Eremite band chancing upon the mausoleum of Kasala, the last priest of King Deshret, who held a record about the truth between the Scarlet King's relationship with Rukkhadevata, convincing Rahman to abandon his grudge and provide the manpower needed for the plot to rescue Nahida. As an added bonus, Isak, having learned how she helped Khalil, bravely acted as a decoy to help lure Akademiya guards into a trap laid by Dehya and Rahman.
  • Kill It with Fire: With Irminsul too far gone from Dottore's antics, its Ley Line information extracted and stored in Aaru, and the mad scholar continuing to mutilate what remains in an attempt to kill Nahida, Wanderer, and the Traveler, the guardian of Irminsul elects to go full scorched-earth. Drawing on the power of the Pyro Gnosis granted by Mavuika, Nahida burns the ancient tree from the inside-out, scouring Dottore from the world along with it. The resulting blaze lasts for seven days and nights.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: She's well aware that in her current state, she is no match for Il Dottore, who can easily overpower her and take both the Electro and Dendro Gnoses. However, she manages to use them as bargaining chips to mitigate the threat he poses, as well as obtain useful knowledge so she doesn't leave empty-handed.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: Pretty much every piece of promotional material depicting Nahida past the pre-Sumeru release trailers makes it clear that she's the Dendro Archon.
  • Let No Crisis Go to Waste: When Dottore infects and irreversibly corrupts Irminsul, Nahida takes the opportunity to sever her connection to it (and the Heavenly Principles by extension), turn Aaru into a new data repository for Teyvat, transfers a large amount of Irminsul's data to Aaru, and then burns Irminsul to the ground using the Pyro Gnosis, taking Dottore with it. This ensures that Teyvat's information will no longer be manipulated or censored by the Heavenly Principles, something she even gets approval for by three of the four Shades (sans Asmoday).
  • Little Miss Almighty: Nahida is the Dendro Archon, The Baby of the Bunch among The Seven, the God of Wisdom, and Rukkhadevata's reincarnation following her death during the Cataclysm. She's eventually worshipped by the people of Sumeru once Rukkhadevata's memories are Ret-Gone from Irminsul.
  • Little Miss Badass: An adorable little girl with unmatched wisdom as well as deceptively strong Dendro powers and even the ability to control dreams. After all, she is the Dendro Archon and God of Wisdom.
  • Little Professor Dialog: As the God of Wisdom who looks like a child, this is pretty much expected of her.
  • Loophole Abuse: Irminsul is designed so that when the knowledge of something or someone is removed from it, everyone's memories of them are erased entirely, even from history. However, aside from only the Traveler remembering, said memories are capable of being preserved via allegorical stories so that Irminsul can't tell the difference. Because of this, Nahida is able to save those of Scaramouche this way to eventually return to his amnesiac self after he tried erasing himself from existence.
  • Loser Deity: Played for Drama. Nahida is shunned and marginalized by Sumeruan society to the point of being kept imprisoned, with most people being apathetic towards her at best and contemptuous of her and her worshippers at worst. This stops by the end of the Sumeru Archon Quest, where Rukkhadevata's memory is erased from Irminsul.
  • Lost in Translation: In Chinese, the nickname that was translated as "Lesser Lord Kusanali" is 小吉祥草王 (xiǎo jíxiáng cǎo wáng), which literally translates to "Little Lucky Grass Monarch," xiǎo ("little") being an affectionate term for a child. This means that it should actually be something like "Little Lord Kusanali," and Yae Miko describing it as a term of endearment only makes sense in the original Chinese. This also leads to a Dub-Induced Plot Hole by the end of the Sumeru Archon Quest, when people still address Nahida as "Lesser Lord" even after all traces of Rukkhadevata have been erased from Irminsul. On the other hand, the term "Lesser Lord" speaks volumes about the people's low regard for Nahida, who they consider an inferior successor to Rukkhadevata, which makes the title make sense in that regard.
  • Love Martyr: Not romantically towards a particular person, but as a goddess to the people of Sumeru. She is scorned, hidden away, and shamed just for the mere fact of existing, as her people (especially the Akademiya) see her as not just being an unfit replacement for Rukkhadevata, but a reminder of her loss. Regardless, she never once faltered in her desire and will to help her people, come what may.
  • Master of Illusion: In the ending of the Summer Fantasia event, it is implied that the Dendro Archon's powers was the basis for the Fatui's Mind-Control Device, since it was able to seriously screw over the psyches of the weak-minded and manifest very lifelike mirages of the strong-willed. This would make her an extremely powerful mystic, to the point of being a Reality Warper.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • The name "Kusanali" is a composite of the Sanskrit words kuśa (कुश, "kush-grass") and nāḷi (नाॡ, "stalk"), the former referring to kusha grass (Desmostachya bipinnata), a tall grass used to weave meditation mats in South Asian religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism. In Chinese, this was translated into 吉祥草 (jíxiáng cǎo, "lucky grass").
    • Both the Japanese and Korean subtitles transliterate Kusanali into, respectively, クサナリ and 쿠사나리, both romanized as Kusanari, then suffixed with debi (デビ in Japanese, 데비 in Korean), which may be derived from devī (देवी, "goddess"). In addition, her Japanese name is prefixed with クラ (kura), which may be derived from either khudda, Pali for "small", or khuda (خدا), Persian for "god".
    • Her divine name, Buer, is based on the tenth demon of the Ars Goetia, who is described to teach natural and moral philosophy, logic, and the use of herbs and plants, obvious nods to her benevolence, wisdom, and control over Dendro.
  • Messianic Archetype: An individual claiming to be the successor god, note  rejected by her equivalent of a church, because they are disappointed that she does not fit their expectations. They imprison and abuse her all her life, not knowing that she is their revered god's creation, anointed to be her next incarnation. And it's specifically the religious leaders who are her greatest enemies, as she has her own devout among the common people. And yet through it all, she remains steadfast in her kindness and patience, and being a Friend to All Children.
  • Mirror Character:
    • She shares bird motifs and a green Color Motif with the nameless child that the kabukimono once took care of, and specifically also only recently "left her nest" after the third Archon Quest Interlude, when he, now the Wanderer, takes up a similar role that he did in the past and becomes Nahida's assistant.
    • She gives Kaveh the highest praise of all the characters she mentions in her voiceovers, claiming that he has an almost perfect understanding of what it means for Sumeru to be a nation of Wisdom. This makes sense, given that Kaveh shares many characteristics with Nahida, such as his empathetic heart that doesn't overpower his wisdom and his readiness for self-sacrifice for what he perceives to be a greater good.
  • Morality Pet: Being left in Nahida's custody ends up being the best outcome for Scaramouche. The Traveler is shocked to see such a dangerous enemy wandering around freely, but Nahida is quick to reassure them that she has reached an agreement with her "guest." As God of Wisdom, Nahida ensures that he is given the chance to access Irminsul and discover for himself the truth about the Tatarasuna Incident, which lay at the very root of his descent to madness. While she claims she didn't expect him to actually manage to erase himself from Irminsul in despair upon learning the truth, she was able to anticipate things enough to store away a copy of his memories encoded as a fairy tale in her personal collection. When the amnesiac Wanderer is brought to her, she aids him in reclaiming his lost memories and gains a valuable agent in the process. He's still very much a foul-tempered cynic, but Nahida has become one of the few people he tones down his vorpal tongue for.
  • Mother Nature: Being the female Archon of Dendro automatically qualifies her as this.
  • Mr. Exposition: While all the Archons (except Ei, in whose place Miko does so, and Furina, who is technically not an Archon and in whose place Neuvillette, the newly-reinstalled Hydro Sovereign, does so) end their related Archon Quest giving crucial exposition to the Traveler before they leave for another land, Nahida is notable not only for being the God of Wisdom, but also being the first one able to give them useful information on their sibling, that not only did they also journey through the seven nations after the Khaenri'ah Cataclysm, but somehow they are a native of Teyvat while the Traveler is the Fourth Descender.
  • Mundane Utility: Her utility passive, On All Things Meditated, gives the held form her Skill the ability to pick up materials from surrounding plants and trees, as well as read the minds of Sumeruan NPCs.
  • Mysterious Waif: She is flat-out described as one in the third Sumeru Preview Teaser trailer.
  • Mystical White Hair: She is a mysterious white-haired girl, befitting one of the Archons.
  • Nature Spirit: Nahida was born from the purest branch of the holy tree Irminsul.
  • Necessary Drawback: Her Skill has an additional ability that allows her to read the minds of various NPCs, and she is currently the only character in the game with the ability to do so. However, this can only be used in Sumeru, as using it elsewhere only makes them clap for Nahida in response. This drawback is likely necessary due to the amount of time, money, and resources that would have to go into programming every NPC from all regions to have readable thoughts, adding an extra burden on the developers and on the game files.
  • Nerves of Steel: Being isolated from people for half a millennium would've driven any other person mad from isolation, but Nahida was not only able to stay strong in spite of her suffering, but she still had it in her to love her people. Additionally, during her confrontation with Dottore, someone who could easily murder her, she keeps her cool and threatens to destroy the Electro Gnosis (which would bring Celestia's wrath down upon the Fatui), a bluff which Dottore falls for.
  • Never Had a Birthday Party: Due to the repression of the Sages, Nahida remained locked away in her energy bubble and neglected for the first 500 years of her existence while the Akademiya organized Sabzeruz festivals for the long-deceased Rhukkhadevata. Happily, after Azar and his co-conspirators were deposed at the end of the Sumeru Archon Quest, she gets an entire Birthday Episode in v5.1's "Chromatic Ode to Candies and Roses" event.
  • Nice Girl: Nahida is almost literally an angel with her benevolence and readiness to do everything in her power to protect the people of Sumeru despite being marginalized by them. Even at the end of the Sumeru Archon Quest, she takes care of a comatose Scaramouche to ensure that he doesn't do anything evil again, and after he wakes up she gives him a chance to start anew and redeem himself. Her playable voice-overs further highlight how sweet and kind Nahida is, expressing fondness for the Traveler and how she wants to keep watching over them on their journey.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: After Rukkhadevata has been erased from Irminsul, all of Teyvat now believes that Nahida has always been the Dendro Archon, who had been imprisoned and abused by the Sages for the "crime" of sacrificing her powers and memories to stop the corrosion caused by Forbidden Knowledge, going so far as to pretend she doesn't even exist for five centuries and then attempt to replace her with a new God of Wisdom. Once the people of Sumeru learn of this, they rightfully condemn the Sages to permanent exile.
Dehya: Those sages really have some nerve. Five hundred years ago, Lesser Lord Kusanali used all her power for the people of Sumeru, and what did they do in return?
  • Not So Above It All: Nahida is as wise as one would expect of the God of Wisdom, but every now and then she betrays thoughts as childlike as her appearance. She suggests that the Traveler and Paimon take a dook-dook to relieve stress, for instance, as well as getting the Wanderer to take on the moniker of "Hat Guy".
  • Only One Finds It Fun:
    • Implied. In Venti's voice-over for Nahida, he compares her songs to his ballads in that both are "full of emotion and imagination", it being the reason they get along. This would make Nahida, out of the playable Archons, the only one that doesn't belittle Venti.
    • In her lines about Cyno, she enjoys his jokes, especially because he starts to explain his jokes the same way she has to explain her metaphors.
  • The Only Way They Will Learn: Nahida sees the value in curiosity, and therefore is not one to give out direct answers or solutions. While they were trapped in the Sabzeruz samsara, she encourages the Traveler to find the answer on their own, and is delighted when they finally figure it out. By the end of the Sumeru Archon Quest, she shuts down the Akasha for good, believing it will encourage people to seek out knowledge more freely. She also provides Scaramouche with access to Irminsul under the guise of looking for information about the Traveler's sibling, so that he would discover Dottore's hand in driving him to villainy instead of simply revealing it to him directly.
  • Parental Substitute:
    • "Divine," to be precise. After the death of Deshret, Rukkhadevata saw the people of the desert to be just as much her people as anyone else in Sumeru. Nahida herself inherits this responsibility, and while her powers are limited in the desert, she helps out whenever she can.
    • In the more traditional sense, she ends up taking care of the Wanderer following his defeat, tending to him after he fell into a coma, and later helping him integrate into Sumeru by giving him a place to stay, putting him in cooking classes so he can socialize, and even enrolling him in the Vahumana Darshan. Despite openly expressing annoyance by all this attention, deep down he appreciates all that she is doing for him.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: A subtler example than most. She's not a very physically capable Archon, but her access to Irminsul allows her to potentially erase anything from Teyvat on a conceptual level. Barbatos, Morax, and Beelzebul can destroy local mountain ranges or Kaijus, the remnants of which are still visible today. If the Dendro Archon wishes to, she can destroy something so thoroughly as if it never existed in the first place, on a global scale across Teyvat.
  • Phlebotinum Analogy: Nahida is extremely fond of these, finding "using old wisdom to explain new concepts" elegant. She particularly compliments Dehya comparison of the Sages hijacking the dreams of Sumeru's people to creating a massive super-brain.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Nahida is possibly the most powerful among the short playable female characters, given that she is the Dendro Archon. She explicitly lacks the strength of other Archons, but other Archons are capable of terraforming, so that's not saying much. Only Klee can compare. And while she spent the last 500 years under house arrest in all but name by the Sages, she could have easily broken free but for her own insecurities holding her back.
  • Really 700 Years Old: As the current Dendro Archon, she was born 500 years ago, although this makes her the youngest of the current Seven.
  • Reincarnation: Nahida is Rukkhadevata reborn (befitting the partial Indian cultural aesthetic of Sumeru), albeit shorn of the latter's memories and powers. Rukkhadevata even describes her as "my incarnation in the next samsara."
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming:
    • "Nahida" is an additional letter more than "Nahid" (ناهید), the modern Persian name of Anahita, goddess of fertility, health, and wisdom in Persian Mythology and later Zoroastrianism, from which the in-game Anahitian Blessing is named after, clearly identifying her as the Dendro Archon.
    • The name of her Constellation uses a Latinized form of Ahura Mazda, god of light and supreme deity of Zoroastrianism, whose name means "lord of wisdom," befitting the Dendro Archon's other title.
  • Sealed Good in a Can: The Akademiya imprisoned her in a Containment Field within the Sanctuary of Surasthana. It would have devolved into an "And I Must Scream" situation but for her ability to visit Sumeruans in their dreams, and frequently extends her protection through the crazed scholars who got in touch with Divine Knowledge Capsules.
  • Sensei-chan: She adopts shades of this during the Sabzeruz Festival samsara where she teaches the Traveler important clues to the nature of the samsara like a teacher would to a student, and then asks them questions about their findings like giving out quizzes. What qualifies her as this trope is the fact that Nahida is kind, adorable, looks like a small child, and clearly cares for the Traveler's wellbeing. When the Traveler finally pieces together the truth from their investigation, she phrases this as a final exam to test their knowledge of what they've learned so far.
Nahida: "Are you ready to take your Sabzeruz Exam and graduate from the festival?"
    Traveler: "Ask away, Miss Nahida."
  • Sketchy Successor: The Sages consider Nahida inferior to Rukkhadevata, trying to censor her existence and locking her away. Even just speaking about her is equated to blasphemy against the Greater Lord. Ironically, the Greater Lord herself inverts this when her lingering consciousness and Kusanali, her reincarnation/successor, meet in the core of Irminsul, assuring the latter that she will grow to become an even greater Archon than she was.
  • The Shrink: Amusingly, she fulfils this role a few times in the story, which makes sense considering her domain of Wisdom and Dreams. In the Sumeru Archon Quest, she helps the Traveler break out of the samsara and find the truth behind it; in her Story Quests she's seen helping the populace deal with their dreams; and in the third Archon Quest Interlude she helps Scaramouche start anew and break free of the Fatui's influence.
  • Significant Birth Date: Nahida's birthday, October 27, falls one day after Jashan-e Abanegan, a Zoroastrian festival (fixed on the ninth day of Aban, the eighth month of the Persian calendar) which pays tribute to the goddess Anahita that Nahida is partially inspired by.
  • Sliding Scale of Gameplay and Story Integration:
    • Nahida, by her own admission, is more of a Support Party Member, and it shows in her kit. On her own, her damage is nothing to write home about, but with the right allies to exploit her Elemental Mastery buff and trigger Dendro reactions, enemy HP bars will disappear like magic.
    • Nahida's childlike personality is reflected in her Normal Attack combos where she jumps up and down to generate Dendro energy as though she were playing hopscotch with her enemies.
    • Her charged attack animation has her creating a phantasmal cube that contracts in on itself, reflecting the Dendro Archon's ability to create a samsara with which she observed Scaramouche's fighting style, allowing her to formulate a plan to defeat him.
    • A closer look at her animations show that she's pressing down on keyboard-shaped Dendro cubes for her combos and dragging a cursor over her surroundings for her charged attacks and the tapped form of her Skill, tying into her being the god of wisdom from a nation that is highly technologically advanced.
    • Nahida being a telepath is reflected in the held form of her Skill having an additional ability to read NPCs' minds.
    • Nahida's tenacity in the face of the injustices she endured is reflected in the held form of her Skill, which renders her immobile, having a very high interruption resistance.
    • One of her Talent Ascension materials is a Trounce Domain drop from Shouki no Kami, an indirect Call-Back to the climax of the Sumeru Archon Quest where she helps the Traveler stop the apotheosis of Scaramouche.
  • Stalker Without a Crush: A benign example. Nahida has been watching over the Traveler throughout their journey since she has almost no knowledge or foresight on them, making their every action worth her interest. She even says in her voice lines that observing them is her hobby and she plans to keep on doing so even after they leave Sumeru.
  • Status Effect-Powered Ability:
    • Nahida's Elemental Skill, All Schemes to Know, has her swipe a Dendro orb on enemies in front of her (in tapped form) or select her targets (in held form), dealing Dendro damage and marking up to eight foes at once with Seeds of Skandha, which deals Dendro damage on all marked foes whenever at least one of them takes damage from Dendro-related Reactions. If she has fully unlocked her Constellation, the combo and charged form of her Normal Attack can also trigger a similar effect while her Burst is active.
    • Her fourth Constellation upgrade, The Stem of Manifest Inference, increases her Elemental Mastery stat based on the number of opponents marked with Seeds of Skandha—100 points if one, 120 if two, 140 if three, and 160 if four and up.
  • Stealth Pun: Nahida's Character Teaser "Nahida: Happy Birthday" came out on her actual birthday (October 27) and told the story of Nahida dreaming of celebrating her birthday with the people of Sumeru, but being unable to do so due to being locked up in the Sanctuary of Surasthana. As a playable character, Nahida was released several days later, meaning that the players would have to wait for almost a full year before getting her first birthday mail. In other words, neither Nahida herself nor the players could celebrate her birthday, because at that moment Nahida wasn't out yet.
  • Support Party Member: She admits that her fighting potential is little-to-none. Her real talent lies in using her wits and tricks to support her allies, and it shows. In gameplay, her kit is fully reliant upon having the right kind of elements in the party: on her own, or with an all-Dendro team, her damage output is almost comical; with the right kind of allies, however, it's devastating. In the story, she created a special Akasha Terminal for dealing with Scaramouche and trap him in a "Groundhog Day" Loop, but can't actually defeat him herself. But after relaying the loop to the Traveler and calling upon the minds of all of Sumeru to power the Terminal, the newborn god is taken down with surprising swiftness.
  • Talks Like a Simile: She has a tendency to speak in simile and metaphor.
  • Tarot Motifs: Nahida alludes to the Moon Arcana, which is appropriately described in-story as representing illusions and deceit. This has multiple implications other than being a clear hint at the Sabzeruz samsara the Traveler, Paimon, Dunyarzad, and several other citizens are going through; not only this highlights the Archon Quest's overarching theme of Nahida being considered a Sketchy Successor to Rukkhadevata, but also encapsulates her self-esteem issues, considering herself a faint light that can only reflect her predecessor's glory, much like how the Moon does to the Sun.
  • Telepathy:
    • She demonstrates the power to speak to the Traveler directly through telepathy at the end of the "Summer Fantasia" event, removing the need for using the Dodocommunicator. In the Sumeru Archon Quest, she does this again to get past the Sages' strictures against her.
    • The held form of her Skill makes her able to read minds as a playable unit, too, though its use is limited to named non-playable characters, with the exception of Katheryne, whose mind can't be read.
  • That Makes Me Feel Angry: While she's sealed herself up in her realm of consciousness during the fifth and final act of the Sumeru Archon Quest, she finally reflects on her emotions and realizes that she's neglected herself and suffered under the Sages for far too long. When the Traveler breaks her out and asks if she's alright, she replies:
Nahida: I'm fine. It's just...When I think of everything that's happened to me, I feel really angry now.
Traveler: (hmms in approval) You should've been angry ages ago.
  • These Are Things Man Was Not Meant to Know: In the finale of the Sumeru Archon Quest, she explains that Forbidden Knowledge is a "truth" from the depths of the Abyss that no one, not even gods, can comprehend.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: She previously allowed the Akademiya to do its own thing and call most of the shots in Sumeru, as despite having her concerns over the way they did things, her inexperience with rule and self-doubt over matching up to Rukkhadevata left her unwilling to do more than give them warnings. After they endangered people's lives with the Sabzeruz Samsara however, she's finally had enough, and intends to stop the Grand Sage and his faction. Sure enough, after Scaramouche is defeated and Irminsul saved, Nahida has Azar and the Sages who joined his scheme to create a god with the Fatui's backing to be permanently exiled to the forests.
  • Token Mini-Moe: Nahida is the smallest and most childlike of the playable Sumeru cast, as well as of the Archons.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Candied Ajilenakh Nuts are her favorite food, and also her specialty dish, to the point where she warns the Traveler not to leave a jar of it in a place she can easily reach.
  • Trauma Swing: One of her idle animations has her conjure up a swing for her to sit on. It's a representation of how she spent centuries of her life in isolation due to how she was seen as an Inadequate Inheritor to Rukkhadevata.
  • Troubled Backstory Flashback: Her Character Teaser has her reliving the day she was found by the Akademiya, led forcibly past her people grieving for her predecessor, then abandoned in the Sanctuary of Surasthana despite her obvious pleas for the next 500 years.
  • Universally Beloved Leader: By the end of the Sumeru Archon Quest, she's gone from being alienated by her people to revered by them, partly due to her part in thwarting the Sages' plan to turn Scaramouche into a new god, and partly due to all memory of her predecessor Rukkhedevata being erased, which not only did away with her more fanatical worshipers, but also caused all of her past deeds to be attributed to Nahida instead. Even those who have reason to hate the Archons like Dainsleif and Neuvillette can't find anything bad to say about her.
  • Un-person: The Akademiya have been systematically attempting to censor her existence via placing her under house arrest, scrubbing all information about her from the Akasha, suppressing worship of her, and going so far as to attempt to create an artificial god to replace her. Ironically, it ends up being her predecessor Rukkhadevata that gets erased from the records instead, and thoroughly at that.
  • The Usurper: She is viewed as this by the Akademiya, who are in denial over the fate of her predecessor Rukkhadevata, despite the fact that Kusanali's birth and promotion as Dendro Archon ought to be proof enough that the Greater Lord is gone for good. This has led to suppression of her worship. The irony here is that she is actually the reincarnation/creation of Rukkhadevata, who literally describes her as her new "self" and her incarnation.
  • Voices Are Mental: Whenever Nahida possesses anyone, they speak with her voice, as long as she doesn't pretend to be them, just like she did with Katheryne.
  • Walking Spoiler: She's only introduced in the second act of the Sumeru Archon Quest, and yet a lot of her entries here are marked as spoilers, which is an early hint that there is much more about the Dendro Archon.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Unlike Rukkhadevata, Nahida received very little worship, leaving her with little raw power to her name. However, her intelligence, dream-manipulation abilities, and connection to Irminsul make her capable of some shocking things, like trapping Scaramouche within 168 mental loops.
  • Weapon Specialization: Nahida's Wish banner runs concurrent to that of A Thousand Floating Dreams (5★). Its Ascension substat is Elemental Mastery (58–265 points), while its "A Thousand Nights' Dawnsong" passive grants its wielder's allies different buffs depending on the party's elemental variety: a 32–64-point boost to Elemental Mastery for allies whose element matches that of the wielder, or a 10–26% boost to the Damage Bonus of their element otherwise, both of which can stack up to thrice (hence a maximum of 96–192 points for the former and 30–78% for the latter), in addition to a 40–48-point boost to Elemental Mastery for allies near the wielder. These buffs further emphasize Nahida's combat role as a Support Party Member.
  • Wham Line: As Scaramouche appears to have triumphed over the Traveler and Nahida and attempts to pull out her Gnosis, she casually grabs his wrist and says:
Nahida: The data collection is almost complete. Do you even know how many times you've tried to take my Gnosis from me?
  • Wham Shot: The v3.1 trailer shows Nahida, who is possessing Sumeru Katheryne's body, being stabbed by a spear and the Traveler being too late to save her. The Archon Quest reveals the context that they were being surrounded by Corps of Thirty mercenaries brainwashed by Il Dottore, and Nahida was able to survive by temporarily swapping consciousness with the Traveler to ensure their escape out of Sumeru City.
  • Wistful Amnesia: After purging Rukkhadevata's corrupted consciousness from Irminsul to eradicate forbidden knowledge, Nahida, like the rest of Teyvat, lost all memory of her predecessor. All that's left is traces of the emotions left behind, such as her anguish for having to erase her predecessor from the world, or the warmth she felt when Rukkhadevata first created her.
  • World's Smartest Man: Default to this, considering her position as God of Knowledge. In practice, the position is a tie between her and Il Dottore, who has potentially more technical knowledge than her, while she definitely is wiser than him.
  • You Could Have Used Your Powers for Good!: Her first Story Quest has her expressing this towards Moseis, claiming that talents and determination like his could've allowed him to become a Sage of the new generation had he put them towards a more just cause instead of squandering them on an experiment that violates one of the Akademiya's biggest taboos.
