"Cars are driven by people. The guiding principle behind everything we make at Volvo, therefore, is and must remain, safety."
Assar Gabrielsson and Gustav Larson

Sweden's greatest export (besides IKEA), Made of Indestructium.

Hailing from Gothenburg, Volvo is a brand known for making buses, forklifts, and other miscellaneous ventures. Primarily, they started making cars since 1927. Before the Turn of the Millennium, the Swedish brand was sold to Ford. Since 2010, they're owned by Chinese automaker Geely, when Ford sold it for a $1.8 billion settlement.

Volvo's Meaningful Name is Latin for "I Roll", while their logo is based on the Greek symbol for iron (♂). While being of Swedish origin, Volvo became an international brand we all knew, thanks to its first manufacturing powerplant in Canada.

From the very beginning, Volvo is known for cars built to withstand and resist the terrain and weather of Sweden, as well as implementing patented features and strict safety componentsnote  which gave them a reputation for being one of the toughest car brands ever made. This shows in the world of motorsports since 1959 such as the 1965 Safari Rally in Kenya and its success at the Swedish/Scandinavian Touring Car Championship which pretty much feels like home. They have also competed in other racing leagues around the world, including the British Touring Car Championship and the Supercars Championship.

In fiction, Volvo became highly noticed in Hollywood as the car driven by characters of middle-class families, detective chief inspectors (DCI) in British Media and Nordic Noir and is often to be a brand for a Product Placement, especially when it comes to a teenage girl with a vampire and a werewolf.

This folder includes Polestar, a former in-house tuning subsidiary of Volvo, now a standalone brand, which Volvo takes 18% ownership.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/polestar_1.jpg

"One petrol engine. Three electric motors. The Polestar 1's combined maximum power is 599bhp, achieving a top speed of 195mph."
Description, Need for Speed Unbound

Polestar was once an in-house performance and racing team for Volvo. Since 2017, it's now a standalone brand that does Green Aesop cars etched with the logo of two Citroën-like chevrons in a form of a four-pointed star.note

Their first model is the Polestar 1, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) 2-door sports car introduced at the Shanghai Auto Show on October 17, 2017, heavily based on the 2013 Volvo Concept Coupé. This new Swedish sports car comes with a hybrid powertrain, with a 2.0 L twincharged inline-4 ICE engine in the front and two electric motors in the rear, plus an ISG generator, totaling of 626 hp worth of power. Though developed and made in Sweden, the Polestar 1 was produced in Chengdu, China.

This hybrid sports car transitioned later on into producing fully-electric cars, starting with the Polestar 2, a battery electric-powered 5-door liftback that draws away from the predecessor's Early-Installment Weirdness. First unveiled at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, it was made available to the public on March 2020, amidst the declaration of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Polestar continues the trend of its Numerical Theme Naming for future models, in its chronological order as time progresses on.

  • The Polestar. We're talking about both the hero car and the cover car of Need for Speed Heat; the modified yellow 2020 Polestar 1, notable for its huge appendages like its absurdly giant wing. This car was owned by Joe during the cold opening prologue where you play as him as you try out A Taste of Power during an ongoing illegal street race downtown Palm City at night. It's quite a shame that Joe's fabled Polestar gets wasted when Officer Danny Shaw runs his car off the bridge and falls down into the ocean, prompting Shaw to question him where his "sweet-ass ride" is, though his superior Frank Mercer clarified that it was his fault for wasting it. Regardless, Joe's Polestar becomes Promoted to Playable in a post-launch update.
    • His car also returned in a Vol. 4 update of Need for Speed Unbound, but unlike in Heat and just like every NFS Legends car, it's locked under a paywall, requiring you to purchase the Vol. 4 Customs Pack or grab its Ultimate Collection.

    Volvo 200 series
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/volvo_240.jpg

"In August 1974, born and bred in Sweden, Volvo presented a new generation of cars. The Volvo 242 belongs to Volvo's hugely successful 240 series and is renowned for its functionality, safety and would stay in production for ten years. It's a popular tuner in Scandinavia, where you'll find everything from tidy restorations to big power, fire-breathing drag cars and history-steeped legendary racers."
Description, Need for Speed (2015)

The brick. Often seen in the hands of wealthy middle-class American families in suburbs.

The Volvo 200 series, usually under the 240 and 260 designation were the flagship models of mid-sized luxury cars introduced in the autumn of 1974 as a replacement to the 140 series and the 164, offered in a wide array of variations, like the 240, 242, 244, 245, 264 and 265. Regarding trim levels, they're coded with the following: L (Luxe), DL (de Luxe), GL (Grand Luxe), GLE (Grand Luxe Executive), GLT (Grand Luxe Touring) and GT (Grand Touring) Typically the 240 is available as a Giulia-like 2-door sedan, a 4-door sedan or a 5-door station wagon, whereas the 260 is locked as a 2-door coupé. Usually, it is ran on a Volvo Redblock inline-4 engine.

While production lasted for 2 decades, its successor was supposed to be the 00 series, introduced in 1982, but was instead a premium derivative of the 200 series due to the 240's popularity, thus overlapping its production with the 200s. Production discontinued in 1993 and was replaced by the Volvo 850.

Volvo 240s are very popular Scandinavian import tuners, primarily due to the success as a Group A touring car that competed at the European Touring Car Championship with the Volvo 240 Turbo.

    Volvo C30
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/volvo_c30.jpg

"It is a car for people who have ankle bracelets whereas the Volvo is restrained and tasteful and very, very pretty. There is, however, a price to pay for that prettiness. The C30 is about as useful as a wooden potato."

One of Volvo's most ambitious projects at the Turn of the Millennium whilst under Ford's guidance is to build a hatchback of their dreams. It's spectacular, it was only offered in one body shape.

From its 2001 Volvo Safety Concept Car (SCC) at the Detroit Motor Show which glimpses as a revolutionary 3-door hatchback made tailored for women as a fun-to-drive car and a storage for their purse, now become an evolution step-up for production. Introduced in 2006 at the Paris Motor Show, the SCC hatch now goes under the new name; the Volvo C30, marketed as a premium hatchback/sports "coupe".

Designed by Simon Lamarre, this hatchback-coupe is noted for its rear-styling, with Broad Strokes recalling from previous Volvo models, like the P1800 ES and the 480. Its interior however is similar as its brothers, the S40 and V50. Engine choices were flexible and versatile, ranging from various inline-4s/inline-5s offered naturally-aspirated or turbocharged, either in gasoline, diesel or both as a dual-fuel (flexifuel). A Product Facelift was introduced in 2009, taking its Retraux accents taking a Call-Back borrowed from the 1800ES, with sportier trim included, turning this hatchback into a hot hatch, with the C30 R-Design.

Production ended in 2013 and was succeeded by the resurrected larger 5-door Volvo V40 II.

The C30 makes a Swedish swoop at the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship (STCC) with Robert Dahlgren of Volvo Polestar dominating the 2010 season, winning both the driver's and team championship.

    Volvo P1800
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/volvo_p1800.jpg

"There it is. Volvo 1800E. Fuel injected engine, 130 brake horsepower, zero to sixty in 9.6 seconds. Oh, and it's the car Roger Moore drove in The Saint. Yeah, you heard that right."
Warren, Forza Horizon 3

If this car comes in mind, many will think about Roger Moore from The Saint in which rocketed to pioneering icons. This here is 2+2, front-engine, rear-drive sports car built to be used on a regular basis, the Volvo P1800, pronounced eighteen-hundred, and built on a Volvo Amazon platform. This was the solution of the previous Volvo P1900 where all the problems are resolved.

This desired Swedish classic was introduced in 1961, designed by yacht desinger Pelle Petterson with guidance from Pietro Frua of carrozzeria Ghia, it was made to compete with American and other European sports cars where affordability is the main focus. Petterson's imagination of this Swedish swoop coupé is a low profiled beltline and a cab-rearward with a sloped rear windscreen. Rounded headlights were a thing at the time since those were the only ones approved.

It runs on a dual-carbureted 1.8 L B18 inline-4 producing 100 hp, though as time progressed introduced variants such as the 1800S with a 2.0 L B20 giving 118 hp, a fuel-injected 1800E with a powerful 130 hp engine and a shooting brake called the 1800ES, with its power downgraded to 125 hp.

The P1800's production reached its end of the line in 1973 with an estimated total of 45,500 units sold. It was indirectly replaced by the Volvo 262C coupé.

Despite the discontinuation, Volvo's factory racing team Cyan Racing was Revisiting the Roots of the classic Volvo P1800 in 2020 by building an Ace Custom restomod of their own, called the P1800 Cyan, painted in its distinctive cyan paint job and a modified turbocharged inline-4 engine that boosts up to 420 hp.

    Volvo S60/V60
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/volvo_s60_v60.jpg
The car approved by sparkly teenage vampires.

"Stupid, shiny Volvo owner."
Bella Swan, Twilight (2005)

If you're a 104 year old vampire from Forks or a detective chief inspector from The BBC, this Swedish saloon is likely your best bet to see in either fiction.

Launched at the start of the Turn of the Millennium, the Volvo S60 replaces the aging Volvo S70 as the new premium saloon. It's the car that made a huge difference in the Swedish carmaker's design language when Ford acquired the brand back in 1999. S implies to stand for "saloon".

Designed by Hungarian-American designer Géza Lóczi, the S60 aimed to compete in the European compact saloon market with the likes of the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the Alfa Romeo 156. The Volvo however outlasted its rivals, with had a long-running production before it eventually got a Product Facelift in 2009. The S60's body design is noted for its rounded shaped and single-angular-shaped panels. Notably, its front fascia resembles to former Viking boats and its rear quarters are noted for its trademark "Volvo's shoulders".

A typical S60 runs on a turbocharged/turbodiesel 2-liter B5 inline-5 engine, though newer generations also offer Ford EcoBoost B4 inline-4 and B6 inline-6, a few of it are twincharged with a turbocharger and supercharger simultaneously. The S60 had performance trims, such as the S60 R, launched at the Paris Motor Show in 2002, the S60 R-Design in The New '10s and a limited-edition S60 Polestar in 2013.

Starting in The New '10s, Volvo launched an estate variant of the S60 called the Volvo V60. This was the first Volvo made under the new management from its Chinese giant, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group.

The S60 has been active in motorsport racing, mainly being the powerhouse of the Swedish/Scandinavian Touring Car Championship (STCC), in its distinctive cyan paint job (with the aptly named Cyan Racing), with Swedish driver Thed Björk reigning supreme for three consecutive seasons from 2013 to 2015. It also competed in the V8 Supercars in Australia from 2013 to 2016. New Zealander Scott McLaughlin impressed Volvo with a 3rd place finish in the manufacturer's final year.

    Volvo S70/V70

"You see that Volvo station wagon over there? The guy drives a 10-year old Volvo. It's brilliant."
Hank Schrader, Breaking Bad

Retiring the 850 name emerges the refined evolution of the Volvo's executive offering when it was introduced in 1997. The Volvo V70, its mid-'90s Swedish family estate in the European market. "V" meant "Versatility", with "70", denoting its relative platform size. At the same year, Volvo launched its saloon derivative, the Volvo S70.

Both models are designed by Peter Horbury, who differentiated the 850's old-school boxy design in favor for more rounded bodies. Usually, both the S70 and V70 run on a 2.0–2.5 L inline-5, offered in petrol, diesel or a mix of the two. Initially they're offered as a front-wheel drive, though Volvo made the two available as an all-wheel drive with the S70 AWD and V70 AWD. A performance trim was also included in the package, that being the S70 R and V70 R, while the later gets a larger crossover body called the V70 XC.

Though the S70 retired by the start of the Turn of the Millennium in favor for the S60, the V70 still pushed into production for its second-generation, built out of a rigid Volvo P2 platform. In the end, the new-gen V70 was more "Swedish" than Ford tried to make it since the American brand's acquisition in 1999. From there on, newer generations of the V70 take cues from the Volvo S60, pined-out with an even curvier design. It was Swedish minimalist concept at best.

The V70 was the Long-Runners of station wagons in Volvo's mantlepiece as production continued up until its end in 2016.

    Volvo XC series
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/volvo_xc90.jpg

"To clarify, we're still making saloon and estate cars. This is purely a sales decision in the UK market, where demand for SUVs is especially strong. Volvo ruins my life for the third time by publicly fact-shaming me. But I should have included ‘for the UK’ for absolutely clarity. They are only spoiling everything for British people. Foreigners can still buy proper Volvos, and should."

The Hummer Dinger from Sweden.

Volvo is best known for its saloon and estates, but with the trend of SUVs booming, Volvo would experiment with their own range of those big boys. The XC series are Volvo's line of crossover SUVs that started of with the XC90 which made its first impression to the public at the North American International Auto Show in 2002, heavily based on the Volvo Adventure Concept Car that was unveiled a year prior. The XC name is short for "Cross Country".

The rugged XC90 is a seven-seater mixed with a dose of an MPV, built with safety standards, featuring a boxy design with a mix of big and rounded shapes, and wheel-arches known as "Volvo's shoulders". The XC90 often comes in a range of petrol and diesel engines from entry-level inline-6s to powerful V8s. The success of the SUV spawned its rivals like the Mercedes-Benz ML-Class and the BMW X5.

It lead to a Spin-Off of the XC, like the XC70 in 2008, being essentially a larger version of the V70 estate, its compact crossover, the XC60 also introduced in 2008, and its subcompact called the XC40, introduced in 2017. By The New '20s, Volvo launched a Green Aesop variant of the XC90 called the EX90, intended to replace the XC90 itself.
