Finding "my special someone" through golf.note
- Right here, right now — I'm becoming the protagonist!— Minami Aoba
Minami Aoba is a first year high schooler hesitant to graduate from high school as a "villager A", having lacked any skills in any school activity, so she searches for a sport that'll change her life. She finds a golf driving range and is approached by a part-time golfer named Haruka Akane, a high school senior. Along with social media influencer, college student and golfer Ayaka Hoshimi, the three set their life goals and achievements, while Minami herself tries to find her place in life through playing golf.
"Let's search for your special Tropes.":
- 2D Visuals, 3D Effects: The show is animated in 2D, but instances of golf balls flying or rolling, along with golf carts and Ayaka's Suzuki Jimmy, are rendered in CG.
- Adaptation Expansion: TV episode 5 expands on the plot of the original ONA.
- Art-Style Dissonance: The frog that meets, and inadvertently scares, Ayaka in episode 8 is far more simplified and cartoony than anything else, including the other animals encountered by the girls at the resort.
- Beach Episode: Subverted. Episode 11 has Ayaka say "we might as well go to the beach." But its actually the end of the episode, and we see only clips of the trio walking along a pier in street clothes as the credits roll.
- Bizarre and Improbable Golf Game: The Virtual golf game played in episode 7. The first hole was fairly typical, but each succeeding hole added strange challenges that would not be part of regular golf.
- Creepy Crows: The girls encounter a few of these at the resort they go to in episode 8, antagonizing Minami by pecking at her clubs and chasing her around repeatedly.
- Crossover: A short one between Sorairo Utility and Birdie Wing. Watch part 1
and part 2
. Done in a limited, Super-Deformed style. - Drives Like Crazy: Megumi, serving as the girls' caddie at the resort, has a brief moment of this when they head off to one of the larger courses. While she's enjoying it, the others are scared out of their wits by how sudden it happens.
- Gacha Games: The shutdown of Minami's favorite one is what spurs her to try various other activities, including (finally) golf.
- Gratuitous English: Some characters speak English in a Japanese accent, such as "Excellent" and "Utility".
- I Just Want to Be Special: Minami joins the golfing club so she can search for something "special" and to become the protagonist of her story. This is due to the fear of being known as little more than a nameless "villager A". The characters themselves also aid in on this by supporting and helping with her goal.
- Ms. Fanservice:
- Ayaka is this due to her work as a model where she wears different clothing to emphasize her beauty.
- Haruka overshadows Ayaka due to having a very curvy body and is clueless when she shows off some of it.
- Product Placement: There is an emphasis on Yamaha Golf products, including the titular utility driver.
- Shout-Out: Other recent golfing anime series have been referenced in the show.
- The old men at the driving range try to emulate various Shōnen golf stories from the past, usually with disastrous results.
- In the first episode, a "Genius middle schooler pro" was mentioned, referencing Ōi! Tonbo
- Minami starts naming her golf swings, like Eve from Birdie Wing. Later there would be a Crossover between the two shows.
- Megumi's young son is also taking up golf, enrolled in a prestigious golfing class, much like the protagonist of Rising Impact
- Supreme Chef: Ayaka is good at making tea, which she claims will help the golfer to calm their mind and body down.
- Title Drop: Downplayed. The "Utility" part of "Sorairo Utility" is spoken by our main character. Its the first club (A "Utility" driver) she bought for herself
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: Haruka and Ayaka are respectively portrayed this way. Haruka is a boisterous golf enthusiast who helps Minami with building her confidence in the sport, while Ayaka is a soft-spoken influencer who is kind to everyone she meets.
- Tomboyish Ponytail: Haruka ties her hair a short ponytail, and is a passionate tomboy compared to the inexperienced Minami and feminine Ayaka.
- Vague Age: Discussed in the preview for episode 9, with Ayaka noting how the show's staff still haven't disclosed her age when boasting about going to a bar, much to Minami's annoyance as she's 15 and is unable to join in as a result.
- Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Ayaka is terrified by frogs.
