This action-packed series is about four heroic deer named Kai, Lola, Rammy, and Bobbi, and their job is to protect the animals who inhabit their woodland home Central Forest, and the humans who inhabit Platinum City, a futuristic metropolis handled by Sir Steel, an entrepreneur who is jealous of the deers' popularity and just wants to impress the citizens around him. Whenever there's trouble, they use their planet powers to save the day!
Since its launch, the show has been one of iQIYI's top children's shows in its home country, and even managed to go global in the international market.
The show originally started as a series of shorts, under within the name Deer Run, that ran from 2016 to 2018 on CCTV.
The city needs us, and we need TV Tropes!:
- Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: The squad wear helmets when they power up.
- Accidental Hero: In "Fan Club", Kai saves the baby turtles that were rolling on a log, which causes them to admire him by showing off to his peers.
- Animesque: The character designs for the squad are somewhat anime-styled, with the deer in particular have chibi-liked eyes, and powers similar to those of Avatar: The Last Airbender.
- Animal Gender-Bender: The female deer like Lola and Jade have antlers.
- Animation Bump:
- By season 2, the animation became more polished and crisp, with the characters themselves having better movement and expression.
- Starting in season 4, the deers (sans Jade) receive updates to their designs, as the most noticeable one is that all of the deers have rounded ears. Additionally, Kai's is the most noticeable out of the four, with his eyes have gotten smaller and his body portion is thinned slightly.
- Art Evolution: The animation in Deer Run was much different compared to animation in this show, as the deer had very different designs compared to what they look like right now.
- Cool Plane: The episode "Kai Express" introduces the Deer Squad Rescue Carrier, invented by Kai. The carrier has the ability to fly like a jet despite looking like a van at first sight.
- Early-Installment Weirdness: Younger animals like Ian's ducklings and Tina's hatchlings couldn't talk in season 1, since they would only make babbling noises. By season 2, the younger animals have now gained their own voices and can talk in full sentences.
- Home Base: The Deer Squad Headquarters, or sometimes called Deer Squad HQ for short, is the home of the titular team who save the people who live in the city and the animals who live in the park.
- My God, What Have I Done?: Happened twice to Kai. First in "Kai Express" when his engine was important after he mistakes that he doesn't need it anymore. In "I Scream", he turned his ice robot huge when using too much of his powers, as it turned into a mega robot and makes the whole forest cold, but he knew what happened.
- No Full Name Given: All characters are little to not have a last name, it's very impossible to know what their full names are, with exceptions for Tine Turtle and her children, and the two resident swans, Fifi and Sasha La Plume.
- Setting Update: Most episodes of the first season took place in the same locations. In later seasons, the show began to expand on more outlandish places such as space, mountains, the ocean, and even an island.
- Sick Episode: "Captain Steel" has Kai, Bobbi, and Lola, all catching a cold while Rammy remains the only one that's fine. However it gets Downplayed in the middle when they all get better after drinking the medicine before joining Rammy in the huge crisis involving the black hole.
- Space Plane: The second season introduces the Deer Squad Space Shuttle, which the deer use to travel up to space for missions and adventures. While it has a similar appearance to the rescue carrier, it has a few tweaks to differentiate it.
- Stock Footage:
- In "I Scream", some part of the beginning from "Ducknado" is seen playing when Rammy and Bobbi were watching TV.
- Later in the season 3 episode "Crystal Cracks", the deer were watching a clip from the season 2 episode, "Raining Teddies" in their living room, laughing about the funny face Bobbi made.
- Talking Animal: Many of the animals who aren't deer can speak in their own voices.
- Theme Tune Roll Call:Kai!
Lola!
Rammy!
Bobbi!
Deer Squad! - Transforming Vehicle: Rammy's vehicle, the Colt Bolt (or Cupule), can transform into a horse on occasionally in some episodes.
- Transformation Sequence: Whenever an emergency happens, the deer squad themselves power up their helmets and do a pose together at the end.
- Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: While Sir Steel isn't exactly evil by no ways, he still cares for others, particularly his poodle, his professor, and his niece and nephew. However, the fourth season introduces Baron Bite, a triceratops-like alien dinosaur who desires to become supreme leader and turn the whole world into a frozen wonderland, and he is a much more serious threat to the deer and the whole world.
- Where the Hell Is Springfield?: It's unknown where exactly Platinum City is. All we know is that it's located in a forest area surrounding the Squad's woodland home.
