Sonny the Cuckoo Bird is the cartoon mascot for Cocoa Puffs, a General Mills-produced cereal. He's an orange Cuckoo bird and was introduced in 1962. In most commercials, Sonny attempts to abstain from his cereal mostly by doing some sort of activity, e.g., riding an elevator all day. However, he will come across some reference to the cereal, like the words "munchy", "crunchy", and "chocolatey", at which point he will burst in energy and exclaim "I'm cuckoo for Cocoa puffs!"
Sonny got his name from the original format of the commercials, in which he was paired by his grandfather, whom he called "Gramps" and was referred to as "Sonny". When Gramps was dropped from the ads, "Sonny" stuck as the character's name.
As far as the cereal itself, it was introduced in the 1950s and has been sold in the United States under General Mills, but under Nestle in Canada, Latin America, and Europe.
I'M CUCKOO FOR COCOA TROPES! CUCKOO FOR COCOA TROPES!:
- Alice Allusion: In a 1991 two-part commercial, Sonny falls through a rabbit hole into a place called 'Cuckoo Land'. As the name suggests, it is a Wonderland-esque world of topsy-turvy logic and Sonny takes the place of Alice as an unfamiliar inhabitant.
- All There in the Manual: Sonny isn't called by his name in the commercials.
- Artistic License – Ornithology: Though Sonny is repeatedly and consistently stated to be a cuckoo bird, he, at minimum, holds some resemblance to a Little Cuckoo, but even so, he still lacks coloring of the chest and tail feathers. Additionally, despite his determination to resist it, Sonny is able to eat chocolaty Cocoa Puffs without the negative side effects it would cause him as a bird.
- Berserk Button: Seeing Coco Puffs, hearing the word “chocolatey”, “munchy, or “crunchy”, it’s enough to make the bird go insane, and begin dancing and bouncing all over the place.
- Bird People: In the more modern commercials, Sonny lives in a city inhabited by fellow anthropomorphic birds.
- The Bus Came Back: Gramps comes back in 2010 in some ads, trying to legally separate Sonny from Cocoa Puffs and treating him to dinner at a fancy restaurant.
- Catchphrase: All together now...Sonny: I'm cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs! Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs!
- Cold Turkeys Are Everywhere: A rather exaggerated case. No matter what Sonny does or where he goes, there will always be someone or something that'll remind him of the chocolaty taste of Cocoa Puffs.
- Courtroom Antics: In a particularly memorable ad, Sonny goes to court to and pleads with the Judge (who happens to be his Grampa) to be legally distanced from Cocoa Puffs. The trial takes a turn when Sonny calls a box of Cocoa Puffs as a witness and promptly goes cuckoo and begins bouncing off the courtroom walls.
- Cuckoo Finger Twirl: Naturally, this action occurs repeatedly in these commercials.
- After Sonny goes cuckoo following a Cocoa Puffs commercial shows up on his TV, the Sonny from that commercial does the gesture while making the associated sound.
- A very 90s commercial has Sonny do this gesture after a boy is caught in a chocolate geysers.
- Sonny does the gesture after Gramps gives a stern warning while defensively saying 'I'm not cuckoo!'.
- Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: In early commercials, Sonny wore a pink and white striped suit with a black bow tie. In the late seventies, his outfit was de-formalised to a pink and white striped turtle-neck. Probably as a way to appeal to a Younger and Hipper audience, the 90s saw Sonny adorn a light blue jock varsity jacket. It wasn't until his 2004 redesign when Sonny seemingly that clothes were overrated and ditched them completely.
- Mouthy Bird: Sonny's beak is drawn and animated to move like a typical mouth.
- Toothy Bird: Occasionally, Sonny (And other bird people) can be seen with teeth in his beak. All the better to eat Cocoa Puffs with!
- Wingding Eyes: This happens very, very often with Sonny whenever he is about to go cuckoo, usually in the form of crazed swirls or multicolored spirals.
