Red Bull (Advertising)
Probably the only energy drink brand with the most elaborate product placement campaign ever.

Red Bull gives you wiiings.
Brand slogan

Red Bull is an Austrian energy drink brand sold since 1984. An offshoot of the earlier Thai brand Krating Daeng, Austrian entrepreneur Dietrich Mateschitz took a liking to Krating Daeng and partnered with its creator Chaleo Yoovidhya to adapt the formula and composition to Western tastes. While both companies are mistaken for each other, they are separate entities focusing on different markets.

While the company is of course well known for its energy drink, its approach towards marketing the drink through cultivating a "brand myth" (read: plastering Red Bull logos everywhere in sports events by sponsoring teams and whatnot, as well as an emphasis on lifestyle news on its website and similarly-targeted magazines) effectively made it more of a media house that happened to be selling energy drinks than just a beverage company.

Their successful business model led to the likes of Monster Energy emulating Red Bull's strategy, with Ken Block and Valentino Rossi being a few of its most prominent endorsers. Besides rival energy drink companies, other firms have also tried their hand at similar media house-esque brand campaigns to some success, like in the Philippines where Boysen Paints tapped into the popularity of their iconic commercials by establishing their own media house producing original content as well as a music label promoting indie acts... all with the ultimate goal of selling cans of paint.

To this end, Red Bull has sponsored countless sports teams from football, to Formula One, to NASCAR, to various World Rally Championship works crews (not to mention having established a couple or so racing teams themselves), and has even ventured into lifestyle magazines and luxury clothing of all things.

For the purposes of this website, this page focuses more on Red Bull as a media company. The company's slogan "Red Bull gives you wings" is also the Trope Namer for Power Gives You Wings.

And oh, their energy drinks can be Nutritional Nightmare. Beware if you plan to drink more than a can.

Selected works (magazines, TV series, etc.):

  • Red Bull Records
  • ServusTV
  • The Red Bull X2010/2014/2019 prototype cars in Gran Turismo 5.

Red Bull gives you trooopes.

  • Early-Installment Weirdness: In the earlier commercials, the characters literally grew wings after drinking Red Bull.
  • Eyes Always Shut: All of the characters in the animated commercials are stylized this way.
  • Jingle: "Red Bull gives you wiiings."
  • Power-Up Food: The animated commercials depict Red Bull as this, as whenever someone drinks it, they become able to fly or perform some other incredible task.
  • Pushed at the Monster: One commercial features two gazelle noticing a lion creeping up on them. One of them pulls out a Red Bull, which his companion states the drink won't make them faster than the lion, to which other states, "I don't have to be quicker than the lion, just faster than you."
  • Sugar Causes Hyperactivity: The drinks are very famous for high sugar content (denser than Coca-Cola, in fact) on top of caffeine inclusion, and someone who drinks Red Bull is usually portrayed as hyperactive in their commercials.

Red Bull Commerical - In this Red Bull commerical, a man takes his girlfriend on a night flight with her believing he drunk Red Bull beforehand having gotten wings from it. Unfortunately for her, his flight power comes from a different source, namely the power of being a vampire.

How well does it match the trope?
