Credit for these images go to Roger Francis, Vice President / General Manager McAllister Towing Providence Steamboat Co. What’s unusual about these images of Reliance?

One thing that’s new is the gilt eagle atop the wheelhouse. According to this NYTimes article from 1996, “a huge flock [of eagles once ] crowned the pilothouses of most of the port’s 600 steam tugboats in the Nineteen Twenties.”  Reliance is one of the more commonly used works in names of workboats, as seems appropriate. And the details of this new look for Reliance definitely fits the lines of this classic tugboat.

Below is an image of Reliance that appeared on this blog way back in December 2012.

Many thanks to Roger Francis for permission to repost this image. I wonder what other details will appear on workboats during this 250th anniversary year.
