Synopsis[]
After a disastrous mission in Bangkok, Peter goes AWOL to track an American agent accused of leaking secrets. Meanwhile, Rose receives a disturbing call.
Plot[]
Bangkok, Thailand
Peter and Alice laugh at a table while conversing. They leave hand-in-hand as she tells him a story about losing a bet that resulted in her getting a Shrek tattoo. They pause as Peter questions if their target Warren Stocker spotted them, but Alice knows he's just looking for tails. They keep up the honeymooners act. They think their target could be a leaker who is about to give away more intel. They watch the man meet with someone and witness a handoff. They don't recognize the new man and put their comms in. She reminds him of the mission and their training before splitting up.
Peter follows Warren into the city and sees him make a drop. Alice asks for his location, with Peter pausing when someone picks up the thumb drive. He sees a mystery man across the street, but follows the guy with the thumb drive. She's about to meet up with him when he's made, triggering a shootout. She's made soon after and runs from the gunfire. She calls the Night Action line for an extraction, where a new phone operator is waiting. Alice relays the extraction point to Peter. He sees her across the way, shouting out when a man approaches behind her, but she's fatally shot in the back. Peter takes off running as the men pursue. He takes cover in an empty warehouse, calling Night Action to get connected with "Reindeer". He tells Catherine Weaver in DC they've been made, Alice is dead, and someone gave up their location. He hangs up and leaps out a window to avoid a grenade.
Jacob Monroe opens the thumb drive and smiles at the confidential information inside.
Peter flees his attackers, though a bullet grazes his side when he jumps into the water. The attackers can't find him.
One month later
Rose talks to her therapist Gretchen about the nightmares she's been having. She's doing everything the therapist recommended, but she's still having anxiety. Gretchen still doesn't know everything that happened to Rose last year. She recommends Rose for EMDR therapy which involves her seeing someone with special training and letting her guard down more. Rose isn't pleased with this suggestion.
Rose heads to a pitch meeting for AdVerse where she's distracted by a phone call from an international caller. She steps out to take the call, which is an American man looking for a missing Peter Sutherland. He promises to call in a few days to see if Peter has contacted her then hangs up. Rose takes out a business card for the White House with Michelle Travers personal number on it.
Peter gets out of the shower and looks at his wound.
Rose meets with Catherine Weaver in a park. President Travers told Catherine to fly across the country to meet with her. Rose asks if Peter is okay and what's going on, learning he's gone AWOL from Night Action. Rose tells her about the phone call she received. The last time she talked to Peter was ten months ago when he left to start Night Action. She grills Catherine on everything that's going on with Peter and what she's doing to help him. Catherine gives her a number to call if she hears from Peter or the mystery caller again, but this doesn't please Rose. Catherine is one of the few people who knows what happened at Camp David, but reminds Rose she isn't part of the family and isn't one of them. The answers she wants aren't hers to have. This was a one-time favor from President Travers. She'll let Rose know if they find Peter, but warns her to drop "Night Action" from her vocabulary.
Rose works in her cubicle uploading photos of Peter to AdVerse. She runs a facial recognition return search for his face, making the needed adjustments to the coding.
Peter is in an apartment watching a man on a live surveillance feed. He swaps out his phone and looks at pictures of Warren Stoakes, including one with a young boy.
By morning, Rose has a list of hits from Peter in the last 30 days.
Peter leaves his apartment in a white van.
Rose finds a picture of Peter in the background of a social media post at an urgent care in New York. She heads to her bosses office and learns the investor didn't take their pitch. She tells Artoun she needs time off because her mom is having surgery in New York. She'll be gone a few days. Artoun gets her promise that she'll stay focused on the job.
Peter plays basketball with Warren's son Ethan while talking about the possibility of Ethan seeing his father. Ethan wants his dad to come to his game, but he's not sure if he'll show. As Ethan's mom approaches, Peter swaps out their phones. Once back in the van, Peter texts with Warren using Ethan's phone. They make a plan to meet up later. He drives to a secondary location where a camera, chair, and handcuffs are present. He ensures his recording device is working then leaves.
A reporter grills President Travers for an answer on who she's endorsing for presidency. She hasn't endorsed Richard Hagan or Knox yet, and doesn't plan too. FBI Deputy Director Aiden Mosley meets Travers on the way to another room, praising her handling of the situation. She can't believe they nominated Hagan, an egotistical prick, as a presidential candidate.
They convene with the leaders of the Night Action missions. Catherine still hasn't located Peter Sutherland. Travers asks for the room and asks for more information on their search for him. Catherine thinks Peter is the problem - she had her reservations about the man that she voiced with Travers before. Travers was assured that Catherine's history with Sutherland Sr. wouldn't be an issue, and Catherine insists it isn't. She met with Rose Larkin who didn't know anything useful. They don't know anything from the mission in Bangkok either. Travers trusts Peter Sutherland and is alive because of him. Catherine believes Sutherland was pushed into the field too early. What worries her isn't where he is physically, but where he is mentally. She and Alice spoke about those concerns. Travers believes he has a good reason to hide.
Rose is in New York and stops at Fulton Avenue Shelter looking for information about Peter. The front desk agent isn't keen on giving out personal information, but Rose convinces him with her story of concern. The desk agent reveals that "David" did stay there.
Peter paces in his apartment until he hears from Warren. He gets a text from Ethan's mom about the phone swap.
Rose arrives at the basketball court and talks to Ethan, asking if he's seen her friend "David". David hasn't shown for their usual meeting and he might have the boys phone. Rose offers to use her superpower to find both the phone and David.
Peter follows directions from Warren on where to meet. When he finally gets off the bus at the stop, Warren is watching from a distance. Peter lures him out of his hiding spot and then follows him down an alley. Warren takes off running and Peter chases him. They fight on a set of steps and exchange bullets until Peter has Warren seemingly pinned. Warren realizes that Peter needs him alive and flees again. Peter gives chase but loses him in the alleys. He rounds a corner, gun drawn, and sees Rose. Their surprise is short-lived when a man shoots at them. Peter pulls her away.
