เชื้อนิวโมคอคคัส (ชื่อวิทยาศาสตร์ Streptococcus pneumoniae) เป็นเชื้อแบคทีเรียชนิดหนึ่ง จัดเป็นแบคทีเรียในจีนัสสเตร็ปโตค็อกคัสแกรมบวกรูปกลม ย่อยสลายเลือดแบบแอลฟาในภาวะมีออกซิเจน ย่อยสลายเลือดแบบเบตาในภาวะขาดออกซิเจน และเป็นแบคทีเรียไม่ต้องการออกซิเจนที่สามารถทนต่อออกซิเจนได้[1] มักพบอยู่เป็นคู่ (ดิโพลคอคไซ) ไม่สร้างสปอร์ และไม่เคลื่อนที่[2] เป็นเชื้อก่อโรคที่สำคัญในมนุษย์ และเป็นสาเหตุที่พบบ่อยที่สุดของโรคปอดบวมในช่วงปลายคริสตศตวรรษที่ 19
