Surgam is the literary magazine of the Philolexian Society at Columbia University, published three times a year. The Fall and Spring issues are comprised of submissions of poetry, short fiction, translations, essays, reviews, photography, and visual art of any style while the Winter issue features the winning poems from our Annual Alfred Joyce Kilmer Memorial Bad Poetry Contest. Surgam‘s ultimate goal is not only to publish the most original and exciting work we can find, but also to foster the artistic development of our contributors and our editorial board members.
Entires that are chosen to be published in Surgam are also eligible for the Philolexian Prize, awarded in conjunction with the Columbia English Department. Established in 1906, the Philolexian Prize will be awarded annually to two written pieces chosen from the pool of pieces published in the most recent Fall and Spring editions of Surgam. The prize is not limited to members of the graduating class.
All members of the Columbia community are welcome to submit. However, only CC, SEAS, GS, and Barnard undergraduates are eligible to win the Philolexian Foundation Prize.
