- "Do we know anything about him?"
"Like how he eats? Beats me."
"Like why he's on this mission."
"That I do know. Shea says that he's an excellent tracker. All Setarans are, apparently. A gift from the Force." - ―Marda Ro and Bokana Koss
Setarans were a sentient species that had domed, ridged heads, pale skin, and gills running from the bottom of the neck to jutting cheekbones, framing two deep-set eyes. Setarans did not possess a mouth, and instead communicated with other sentients via telepathy. The species was known for their Force-related tracking abilities. Calar was a Setaran associated with the Path of the Open Hand.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
The species name Setarans first appeared in the 2023 novel The High Republic: Path of Vengeance, written by Cavan Scott. The species is similarly described to[1] the species of the character Letrun Pay from the 2017 film Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi,[3] designed by concept artist Ivan Manzella,[4] and referred to by the production code "King 55D."[5] As of April 1, 2025, Letrun Pay's species still did not have a name within the official Holocron continuity database[6] and when asked if the two species were actually one and the same, Keeper of the Holocron, Leland Chee, stated that he didn't want to presume Scott's intent, but that it was definitely something he'd want to put a pin into until they needed to come up with a definitive answer, weighing authorial intent against the possibility of not having to invent a new species name.[7]
Similarly Cavan Scott's audiobook The Jaws of Jakku,[8] released on October 9 later that same year,[9] identified[8] the also previously unnamed species[6] of fellow The Last Jedi character Centada Ressad as Tallimarian.[8]

(backup link) (screenshot) Jason Fry, co-author of The Essential Atlas and a number of maps in the current Star Wars canon (see a list here), stated his intention to create homeworlds for numerous species based on context implied from their names. This article treats the Setar system as the location of one such homeworld with regard to the Setaran species.
