2002 (MMII) was a common year starting on Tuesday of the Gregorian calendar.
Behind the scenes, most of season 3 was produced from early to mid-2002 ("No Weenies Allowed" - "Pranks a Lot").
Production of the third season concluded on August 2, 2002 with the completion of "Pranks a Lot", after which the development of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie began soon thereafter.
"Welcome to the Chum Bucket," "Frankendoodle," "Graveyard Shift," and "Krusty Love" are the only season 2 episodes to premiere in 2002 on the main Nickelodeon channel, despite all of these episodes having been produced in early 2001.
"Gary Takes a Bath" also premiered in 2002, but only on the Nicktoons channel, not premiering on Nickelodeon itself until 2003.
If counting the Nicktoons premiere of "Gary Takes a Bath," this year would see the conclusion of season 2, ending it with "Graveyard Shift" and "Krusty Love."
2002 began with four new episodes as part of the SpongeBob-a-Thon event on January 21, followed shortly after by two new episodes every Friday from February 22 to March 29, 2002. There was a special event on May 17 to celebrate the 100th episode of SpongeBob. The rest of 2002's episodes premiered June 1, July 12, September 6, and September 20 (not counting June 17).
After September 20, the next new episodes didn't air in the United States until January 2003. All episodes that premiered in the United States in 2003 and 2004 were produced and aired elsewhere in 2002. This was because of an intentional hiatus to accommodate production of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.
Most of the second half of season 3 premiered in South Korea, Australia, & New Zealand before the United States.
All episodes of Season 3 had aired in South Korea and Canada by October and November 2002, respectively.
The next time a year aired a lot of episodes and started a hiatus due to a theatrical movie would be in 2012 airing a large number of episodes in the spring, and starting the 2013-14 hiatus due to the next film being in production.
