Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is an Indian technology company that provides IT services and consulting. The company is based in Mumbai and is part of the Tata Group. As of 2024, Tata Sons owned 71.74% of TCS, and almost 80% of Tata Sons’ dividend income came from TCS.[1]
History
[change | change source]Tata Consultancy Services Limited, earlier called Tata Computer Systems, was founded in 1968 by Tata Sons and began by providing punched card services to Tata Steel, creating a reconciliation system for the Central Bank of India, and offering bureau services to the Unit Trust of India.[2][3]
On 8 October 2020, Tata Consultancy Services’ market capitalization crossed that of Accenture, reaching over $144 billion.[4]
Controversies
[change | change source]In 2006, a US law firm filed a class-action lawsuit claiming TCS wrongly took employees’ tax refunds and deducted their Indian salaries from their US pay, and in 2013 TCS settled the case for $30 million after a judge approved the agreement.[5]
In October 2014, Epic Systems filed a lawsuit in the US District Court in Madison. The company accused TCS and Tata America International Corp of stealing its trade secrets, confidential information, documents, and data. The lawsuit was updated twice, once in January 2015 and again in December 2015. In April 2016, a US jury ordered TCS and Tata America International Corp to pay US$940 million in the case. This amount was later reduced to US$420 million in 2017.[6] In 2020, an appeals court said that US$280 million of the punitive damages was too high, but it kept the remaining US$140 million in compensatory damages.[7] The case finally ended in November 2023, when TCS agreed to pay US$125 million.[8]
In 2019, an employee filed a complaint with the Kancheepuram labour court,[9] saying that TCS’s internal complaints committee did not handle a sexual harassment case properly.[10] Although the case was accepted, there has been very little progress, and the employee says the company has delayed the investigation.[11][12] The employee also says they were transferred without clear reasons and faced other forms of workplace punishment, including in performance reviews.[13]
