Nestlé Nespresso S.A., trading as Nespresso, is a business unit that is a part of the Nestlé Group, based in Vevey, Switzerland. Nespresso machines brew espresso and coffee using coffee capsules (or pods for home or professional machines), which are pre-measured single-use container, or reusable capsules. These pods are filled with ground coffee beans, sometimes with added flavorings. Once inserted into a machine, the capsules are opened by poking them with a small, sharp tool and are then processed. Water is then forced against a heating element at high pressure, meaning that only the quantity for a single cup is warmed. By 2011, Nespresso had annual sales in excess of 3 billion Swiss francs, or over 3.7 billion United States dollars. The word Nespresso is a portmanteau of "Nestlé" and "Espresso", a common naming method used across other Nestlé brands (Nescafé, BabyNes, Nesquik). Founded in 1986, Nespresso operates a direct-to-consumer business model through Nespresso Boutiques, online sales, and the Nespresso Club. The company produces multiple machine systems, including OriginalLine and VertuoLine, and operates capsule recycling programs as part of its sustainability efforts.
