Football in the Faroe Islands dates back to 1892, when TB Tvøroyri was founded. The Faroese Football Championship exists since 1942. A women's championship exists since 1985. The first artificial turf pitches in the Faroe Islands were built in the mid-1980s. The Faroese Football Federation (FSF) began training coaches and referees, receiving assistance from Denmark.
