Fallout 4 is an action role-playing video game which was created by Bethesda Game Studios and released by Bethesda Softworks. It is the fifth video game in the Fallout series and was released around the world on November 10, 2015 for Microsoft Windows as well as the consoles PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.[1]
The game is set in the year 2287 in the city of Boston, 210 years after a nuclear war destroyed the world.
Fallout 4 was officially announced in June 2015, and released on later that year in November. It was generally given good ratings by critics.[2] 24 hours after launch, Fallout 4 had sold 12 million copies and made $750 million.[3]
Premise
[change | change source]In the Fallout universe, instead of innovation on transistor technology, scientists innovated fusion power, allowing them to use it to power most everyday things in society. However, a resource war between the United States and China erupted into an all-out nuclear exchange on 23 October 2077 known as the Great War, in which most of humanity died in the span of 2 hours. Those who survived did so in great underground vaults, bunkers across the United States built by Vault-Tec. However, Vault-Tec uses these vaults to conduct experiments on its residents, to create a society they have total control over.
Plot
[change | change source]Fallout 4 begins on the day of the Great War, 23 October 2077. The protagonist navigates ordinary family life until loud sirens warn of an incoming nuclear attack. The protagonist, their spouse and son all escape to the nearby Vault 111. Inside the vault, all of the residents are placed in what they believe to be decontamination chambers. However, it turns out that they are actually crycochambers, freezing everyone in place for a long time.
The protagonist first awakes in the year 2227, 14 years before the events of Fallout 2. They are forced to watch their spouse murdered and their son kidnapped by a mysterious group of individuals. They then go back into cryosleep. In the year 2287, the protagonist's pod opens, and they leave the vault as the Sole Survivor, in order to rescue their kidnapped son and avenge their spouse's death.
Gameplay
[change | change source]In Fallout 4, the player takes control of a character nicknamed the Sole Survivor. They are given a choice to decide between a male and a female character, both nicknamed Nate and Nora respectively. Nate is a war veteran, and Nora is a law major. However, regardless of which genderthe player chooses from, they are free to pursue any monogamous relationship available in the game, including same-sex ones.[4]
Any name can be set for the Sole Survivor. Codsworth, a robot NPC, has a list of many different common names he can say.[5]
Fallout 4 is different from previous games, as it uses a newer game engine called the Creation Engine. It completely revamps game mechanics and adds new ones as well. Power Armor received a total revamp, becoming a core gameplay feature. In Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, they were simple armor pieces, but they had now become tall vehicle-like suits that the player has to manually enter, similar to how they were portrayed in the original games. They require fusion cores in order to work correctly.[6]
A settlement building function was also added. The player could now, in designated areas, build shelters of their own and with certain DLC, can even create a vault of their own within the space of Vault 88. Crafting also received an overhaul, with various weapons and ammo that can be crafted by otherwise useless items picked up across the game.[7]
Fallout 4 also has official mod support through the Creations menu, which allows fans of the game to submit custom mods for the game, which could be new weapons, improved visuals, or even entire story maps.[8]
