Completed college applications are reviewed on a rolling basis throughout the year as long as space remains available. We encourage students to apply early to ensure their place in the class. Decisions are typically released within two weeks of completion of the application process. As many of our scholarships are awarded to qualified students at the time of admission, we encourage students to apply by the following dates for full consideration.

Dates and Deadlines

Students may apply up to a year before enrollment. Students who will have completed 10th or 11th grade by enrollment should apply to Simon’s Rock. Students who are in 8th or 9th grade should apply to Bard Academy.

    “Why Bard Academy?” Essay
Why Bard Academy? What goals, ambitions, and motivations have led you to apply for admission to Bard Academy at Simon’s Rock? Are there particular experiences, either academic or personal, that have contributed to your desire to begin college early? How does the particular kind of education and community that Bard Academy offers fit your own desires for intellectual and personal growth? How will your presence affect the academic and social environments at Bard Academy? Respond to these questions in an essay of about two pages.

For the second essay requirement, you have one of two options:
    a) Upload an essay that you’ve already written and which has received a grade from a current teacher.
    b) Submit another original essay based on the critical analysis prompt below. Critical Analysis: For this essay, you will choose one of the following quotations.

Respond to the prompt associated with your chosen quotation with an essay of about two pages. Your essay should also explain what you think the quotation means and why you agree or disagree.
    a) Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote that “Each age … must write its own books; or rather, each generation for the next succeeding. The books of an older period will not fit this.” Discuss a concept, assumption, or tradition that you either think is outdated and should be reconsidered or remains valuable despite being old.
    b) William James offered this as a definition of education: "Education, enlarging as it does our horizon and perspective, is a means of multiplying our ideals, of bringing new ones into view." Describe an educational experience that caused you to champion or pursue a new ideal.
    c) Marie Curie thought, “Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.” Share an example of a time when you wanted or needed to learn about something that you found frightening or uncomfortable. How did you approach that task?

    Essays
    1) WHY HERE, WHY NOW?
Leaving high school to begin college early is an unusual choice. What goals, ambitions, and motivations have led you to apply for admission to Bard College at Simon’s Rock? Are there particular experiences, either academic or personal, that have contributed to your desire to begin college early? How does the particular kind of education and community that Simon’s Rock offers fit your own desires for intellectual and personal growth? How will your presence affect the academic and social environments at Simon’s Rock?
    2) CRITICAL ANALYSIS
W.E.B. Du Bois [1868-1963] was an American sociologist, historian, civil rights activist, and author. Born in Great Barrington, where Simon’s Rock is located, Du Bois was the first African American to earn a doctorate from Harvard. Du Bois published The Souls of Black Folk in 1903, was one of the co-founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909, and edited its monthly magazine, The Crisis.
Write a 500 - 1000 word essay on one of the following topics:
    A. Interpret the following excerpt and discuss its implications for education, inclusion, and democratic society.

“The hushing of the criticism of honest opponents is a dangerous thing. It leads some of the best of the critics to unfortunate silence and paralysis of effort, and others to burst into speech so passionately and intemperately as to lose listeners. Honest and earnest criticism from those whose interests are most nearly touched,— criticism of writers by readers, of government by those governed, of leaders by those led,—this is the soul of democracy and the safeguard of modern society.”
    B. In this excerpt, Du Bois describes the experience of African Americans pursuing an education in post-Emancipation America. Interpret the excerpt and discuss how it might speak to the present day pursuit of knowledge, self-awareness, and authenticity.

“It was weary work…If, however, the vistas disclosed as yet no goal, no resting-place, little but flattery and criticism, the journey at least gave leisure for reflection and self-examination; it changed the child of Emancipation to the youth with dawning self-consciousness, self-realization, self-respect. In those sombre forests of his striving his own soul rose before him, and he saw himself, – darkly as through a veil; and yet he saw in himself some faint revelation of his power, of his mission. He began to have a dim feeling that, to attain his place in the world, he must be himself, and not another.”
  • Interview
An interview with an admission counselor may be requested by the Admission Office after initial review of your application. We prefer that the interview be in-person as part of a visit to campus but we also schedule virtual and phone interviews.
  • Secondary School Report and Transcript
Your school counselor will submit this report with your transcript. Your application will not be considered complete until we receive current year grades, i.e. first semester/trimester or the midyear grade report. In most cases, these are available after early November (semester system) or early December (trimester system). If your school does not include this with your school report and transcript, please request to have these emailed to [email protected].
