I am an electronics engineer by training, but have migrated into software over the years, through maintaining and developing various Quality Control and Measuring systems, then Test Systems, then into databases and web programming. Now I write and maintain the software for a rostering system in a company that sells to large organisations such as the NHS.
I have been interested in Science Fiction and Fantasy since childhood. I can't recall when I first got interested in that, but it was well before the time I remember borrowing a great stack of those sort of books at 12 or 13 and reading three in one day.
I was introduced to Tolkien at 14 through the BBC Radio 4 dramatisation of The Lord of the Rings. Then I found and joined the Tolkien Society. After a few years I became one of its trustees. This lasted until early 2009 when I felt that I was unable to continue due to the actions and behaviour of some others within the society.
I am now re-igniting my interest in the wider forms of Science Fiction and Fantasy through Worldcon and Eastercon, as well as a long dormant interest in systems, such as signaling.
I am also on LiveJournal (under this name), Facebook and Twitter (as rcrawshaw).
