The Metropole Building Project
A New Nonprofit Center for Communities of Color
The Metropole is a historic structure in downtown Seattle, originally built in 1892, which has been in need of renovation and redevelopment for over a decade, after a fire destroyed a large part of the building. In June 2019, the Satterberg Foundation purchased the Metropole to renovate and revitalize it. Our overall goal has been to supply below market office and community space for nonprofit organizations in the area — with a focus on organizations led by and serving communities of color.
With input from community advocates, nonprofit organizations and local residents, the Metropole has been developed into a community-centric home for nonprofit organizations, slated for opening in 2025. The Metropole building project sits at the nexus of Satterberg’s commitment to promoting a just society and a sustainable environment. The Metropole strengthens nonprofits through authentic, relationship-based partnerships within Black, Indigenous, and People of Color communities. In addition, the building is LEED Platinum-certified, the highest rating of a building’s level of sustainability.
Day-to-day management of the Metropole rests with the building’s steward, Kendra Walker. As the Metropole’s Community Steward, she focuses on community partnerships, tenant recruitment, operations and facilities management. For more information, or if your group is interested in space in the building, we encourage you to visit the Metropole website for next steps.
