RTS Bursaries
Applications for the RTS Bursary Scheme are now open and will close on Wednesday 24 June.
The RTS believes in diversifying and future-proofing the TV industry, and that starts by channelling new voices. Since the first RTS Bursary Scheme was launched in 2013 by our Royal Patron, His Majesty King Charles III, we have supported 413 students from low income backgrounds, with 82% of graduates securing employment within TV and related industries.
The RTS runs two pioneering schemes with the support of our partners:
We award bursaries to students from low income backgrounds studying any and all subjects as undergraduates or at HND Level 5 or 6. All you have to do is demonstrate your passion for pursuing a career in television, film, digital content production or related media industries in your application.
We'll provide you with:
- Funding from £1,500 per academic year
- Free access to all RTS events, networking opportunities, screenings and lectures
- A personal industry mentor
- Free access to RTS Mini MBA upon graduation
- Free RTS Membership
What sets the Bursary Schemes apart is our phenomenal network of RTS members, patrons and supporters, including RTS Bursary Ambassador, TV Presenter AJ Odudu. Through offering work experience, networking opportunities and mentoring, they help us lay out a clear career path for our scholars: the next generation of TV and digital media talent. If you would like to support the Bursary Schemes, please contact us on [email protected] to find out more.
Thank you to our partners: All3Media, Apple TV+, Andy Taylor Foundation, Hartswood Films, Paramount, the Steve Hewlett Memorial Fund and STV.
What do our Scholars have to say?
Freyja Howlett
TV & Film Set Design, University of South Wales
“As someone who comes from a very small village with no film connections, this bursary has been so important to me in order to really crack open the film world and to gain so many amazing experiences and meet people I never dreamed of meeting.
It’s also given me the most amazing circle of friends who are also taking these very daunting steps with me and can support each other with whatever is next.”
Mohamed Elhabib Ali
Computing Science, University of Glasgow
“The bursary is so much more than just financial support, it's a key that unlocks real industry access. The central RTS team has been great, and the opportunities provided were the highlights of my year.
I attended the Patrons' Dinner in London, which was an amazing first-time networking experience. The RTS Summer Tour was also incredible getting to visit places like the BBC, Sky, Channel 4, and ILM was invaluable.”
Emma Comfort
English Literature/Film & Television Studies, University of Glasgow
“Having the scholarship not only meant that I was spending less time worrying about financing my studies, and more time actually completing those studies.
It also increased my confidence tenfold and I think that this manifested in a higher expectation for my own achievements.”
Joshua Seneviratne
Politics with International Relations, University of Leicester
“The highlight of the bursary scheme for me this year has been the mentorship experience and the incredible opportunity it led to, a week-long placement at BBC East Midlands Today. This was one of the most rewarding and insightful experiences I’ve had so far, as it gave me a real understanding of how the BBC operates across television, radio, and online journalism.
It’s motivating to feel supported by an organisation that genuinely invests in the next generation of media professionals.”
Ellie Claridge
2D Digital Animation, University of Hertfordshire
“As much as I enjoyed the trips and events I attended, my favourite part of the scheme has been meeting so many wonderful mentors.
It's really lovely to have advice and feedback from people in the industry, and it's so nice to have lots of friendly faces that can offer me support and a way into a job!”
Eoghan Mullan
Media and Television Production, University of Chester
“As well as getting to meet others my age from around the UK who share my passion for the TV industry, I also got to start a work placement with STV and Two Cities to work on Series 3 of Blue Lights as a Trainee AD!
As a student from Derry, sometimes it can feel like I’m outside all the action in terms of the TV industry, but the RTS have given me the opportunity on multiple occasions to fly to England and attend events like the Summer Networking Event and the Cambridge Convention, and covered my travel which otherwise would have stopped me from attending these events.”
