The Words We Leave Behind Reading Al-Baqarah 2:104 through the Hadith

At first glance, the ayah seems to revolve around a single word. But the more one sits with it, the more it begins to feel like an ayah about adab.

Some people had begun using the word: ﴿رَاعِنَا﴾ - rāʿinā in a way that carried mockery and hidden disrespect toward the Prophet ﷺ.

The āyah does not stop at correcting the expression. It teaches a different way of speaking: ﴿وَقُولُوا انظُرْنَا﴾ “But say: Unẓurnā.”

The ayah seems deeply concerned with the way people speak around what is sacred. Reverence is not only protected through major actions, but through the small ways a person speaks, listens, and addresses what i

O believers! Do not say, “Râ’ina.” [Herd us!] But say, “Unẓurna,” [Tend to us!] and listen ˹attentively˺. And the disbelievers will suffer a painful punishment. (104)

It dismayed me to find, in the widely popular interpretations of this ayah, hadiths about the Prophet (peace be upon him) mixed with Israelite and Torah narratives regarding the story of Adam (peace be upon him), many of which contradict the clear message of the Quran. Most of these hadiths are either falsely attributed or interpreted in ways that deviate from the Quranic text, simply to justify the inclusion of Israeli narratives by their narrators, regardless of their status. The story of Adam is certainly one of the unseen matters that we believe in as it is told to us, but the problem with these alien narratives is that they distort the objectives of the original Quranic story and have a

I was thinking about how quickly another Eid has come and gone.

Before, time used to feel slower. Moments lasted longer. Memorable moments were more. But today, despite having more convenience than ever before, many people share the same feeling: years seems to be slipping away.

Time has not changed, but perhaps the way we experience it has. The greatest challenge of our age is not a lack of time, but a lack of presence.

We move from notification to notification, task to task, screen to screen, rarely allowing ourselves to fully inhabit the moment we're in. When our attention is scattered, our memories become thinner. Days blur together, and before we know it, another year has already pas

Jazakallah khair for sharing this powerful reflection. Masha'Allah, I agree with your point and it's beautifully articulated. I'm also reminded of how time in this life will feel even quicker (as if we lived on earth just for a day or part of a day) on the Day that we are resurrected ... نَّحْنُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يَقُولُونَ إِذْ يَقُولُ أَمْثَلُهُمْ طَرِيقَةً إِن لَّبِثْتُمْ إِلَّا يَوْمًۭا "We know best what they will say - the most reasonable of them will say, 'You stayed no more than a day.'" We all carry ships in our lives that sank, that were drowned and it felt like they took pieces of us with them. We wept. We complained. There were days when it felt as though our lifeline had been cut. Time moved slowly, and each day was heavy to carry, yet we endured.

Only later did we understand why those ships had to sink.

That loss began to look like gain. The one crack in the hull we cursed became the shield that kept pirates away. The wreck saved us from storms we didn’t even see coming.

In the end, we realized our Rabb had been protecting us from the very dangers we were sailing toward ourselves.

So time always reveals why our ships had to sink. The real question is whether we

Everything rests in Allah's hand. It should come as no surprise, then, that human ownership exists only by virtue of Allah’s dominion and permission. Whatever we possess is only entrusted to us and never truly ours in any ultimate sense.

It is for this reason that expressions of high exaltation, Tabāraka, are only appropriate forAllah. It is profoundly crucial to formally recognise that all dominion belongs to Him, in the beginning and in the end, over all that He has bestowed upon His servants. Reminding people of this reality, in both word and demeanour, remains a basic responsibility. One manifestation of such recognition is that a believer seeks Allah’s approval and blessing in every ma

Have You Found Allah’s Invitation Letter Yet?

This isn’t about waking up at 3 a.m. and praying. Neither is it about fasting a lot.

It’s about turning back.

Because maybe… just maybe… the reason Allah placed so many U-turns in your life was never to break you—

But so you could pause. Reflect. And find your way back.

And guess who is waiting for you at the destination?

The One who placed the U-turn so you could find Him. The One who let you wander… only so you could find your way back to Him.

“Did He not find you unguided, then guide you?” (93:7)

Sometimes…

the most beautiful part about returning is realizing:

He found me first.

Before I turned back. Before I made duʿā’.

Friday Reflection — Sūrat al-Kahf (18:5)

How easily words can begin to move through generations without ever truly being examined.

“Neither they nor their forefathers have any knowledge of it. Grave is the word that comes out of their mouths. They speak nothing but a lie.”
(18:5)

The ayah begins not with accusation,
but with the absence of knowledge.

مَّا لَهُم بِهِۦ مِنْ عِلْمٍ
“They have no knowledge of it.”

As though the danger begins long before falsehood becomes obvious. Sometimes it begins simply in speaking beyond what is truly known.

And then the

Allah is the Greatest teacher, and in this ayah Allah is training us to say we belong to Allah … whenever we are faced with a trial …

If you look at it and reflect upon it, you realize this is a claim.

Allah is making a claim upon us that we belong to Him…

I belong to Allah…

what a beautiful claim!

What a beautiful thing to belong to!

And indeeeeeed, what a wonderful, beautiful, and loving God! In life when people travel to foreign lands to settle Oftentimes in a state of conflict, they are told You dont belong here. Go back. Go home. I have now been living abroad for almost 17 years and I may not have heard it verbally but i have seen its echoes in dense

The Ayah is so heavy. The statement is for those who think carrying weight is easy and transferable, just like in this world's dealings.

Allah called the people who arrogantly claimed to carry the other people's burdens true liars, and here, in this ayah, Allah says they'll certainly carry their own burdens. "أثقال" is a word for heavy loads. And apart from their own burdens, they'll carry the other burdens, especially the burden of misleading others, misguiding and motivating people to leave Allah's path.

The use of the Lam of emphasis and the Noon of emphasis in carrying the burden demonstrates how true Allah is and his speech and the day of Aakhirah and how false are the claims of the d

Jazakallah khair khair for sharing this thought-provoking and a very powerful reflection, masha'Allah, and it's a reminder for all of us. Your reflection also reminded me of the verses: فَلَا تُطِعِ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ٭ وَدُّوا۟ لَوْ تُدْهِنُ فَيُدْهِنُونَ "So do not give in to the deniers. They wish that you would soften (in your position), so they would soften (towards you)." (68:8-9) And also the verse: وَإِن تُطِعْ أَكْثَرَ مَن فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ يُضِلُّوكَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَإِنْ هُمْ إِلَّا يَخْرُصُونَ "And if you obey most of those on the earth, they will mislead you from the way of Allah. They follow not but assumption, and they are not but guessing." (6:116)
