Trivia
- Project Zomboid was officially announced on May 15, 2011, but first mention of it was available a week earlier, on May 8, 2011 under the Project Secreto, SECRETO PROJECTATRON GEORGE or SECRET PROJECT ALPHA ROMERO names.
- The original build of Project Zomboid was leaked to 4chan, prompting an earlier game release, rushing to get this game to everyone who pre-ordered.[2][3] Despite the problems, the devs have asked fans of the game not to be “down” on piracy, and have highlighted reasons why people might have gone down that route, such as having no access to PayPal.[4]
- The original versions of the game could be player in the browser under the http://cloud.projectzomboid.com/. This future was later removed, with the Java browser plugin being ultimately scrapped.
- The oldest game versions were not archived and may be considered a “lost media” until found. Before moving to Desura and then to Steam and GOG, the game was distributed on Amazon AWS and sometimes mirrored by the users, and The Indie Stone, but not all files are currently backed up. The remaining ones were gathered by the community by various sources, with piracy being one of the way to obtain and, along the modification to bypass game ownership checks, is not frowned upon for these versions as confirmed by Lemmy[5] and on Discord after asking.
- The list may be missing some intermediate versions that were released without patch logs intermediately. Some old forum posts may have not been archived either. These are noted as found.
- The game used to have a demo for free, both on the website initially as 0.1.4c and later on Steam, but these were ultimately abandoned. No further demos are planned for the game, with the Steam refund being an option to try the game for 2 hours, see the FAQ for explanation.
