I spent 11 years in hotels and restaurants. Loved it. But by 31, I was craving something slower, something that was mine. My brother suggested I build a blog myself instead of just starting one. I did a horrible job, but I fell in love with it.

With some encouragement, I moved to WordPress. My very first attempt, I tried to build a custom theme. I didn’t know PHP. I didn’t know what a template hierarchy was. I reverse-engineered WordPress line by line in a tiny file editor with no line numbers. I came in the back door, up the building, across the street, and dug a tunnel to get here.

It was painful. I learned everything backwards. But slowly the terminology started to click, which made Googling things actually useful. That was 12+ years ago. WordPress taught me everything I know about software — its hook system still shapes how I architect code today.
