Moving to signoff for visibility, as this is expected to be marked down as "declined" rather than actively being worked on!

50px LGTM! There's a patch up for review, but will wait for @JScherer-WMF we're good with 50px before merging!

can we make the decision on source image vs thumbnail size?
Jun 18 2026
Closing - we have T429512: [Image Browsing] Determine image size requirements for carousel to investigate further adjustments.

@JScherer-WMF I'm beginning to think 100px might've been a tad bit too aggressive. E.g. we're losing all of these gallery images https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Kenya#Peaks; none have a height of 100px; the first 2 images in https://en.wikipedia.beta.wmcloud.org/wiki/Vietnam_War also don't make the cut.
Maybe we should consider decreasing the limit somewhat?

| enwiki beta | ... |
|---|---|
| https://en.wikipedia.beta.wmcloud.org/wiki/Vietnam_War - two first imgs from the info box are not present in the carousel | Those image are missing intentionally, because they're < 100px in height (T428810) |
| https://en.wikipedia.beta.wmcloud.org/wiki/Cactus_wren on enwiki beta the image from the infobox (File:Status_iucn3.1_LC.svg) is not present in the carousel - otherwise, all imgs are displayed as expected | That image is missing intentionally (T428597) |
Yes, seems like the same issue as T428610 indeed, so should also be fixed once that lands!
@KSarabia-WMF already took care of this in https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/c/mediawiki/extensions/MultimediaViewer/+/1290769, which should hit production this week.

The carousel is a more limited set of images than <all images in the article>; the size limit is a big differentiator, but there are also a bunch of files excluded for other reasons (e.g. signatures)
IMO, the carousel is not a separate set of imagery (where clicking an image opens a lightbox with only those), but rather just another entrypoint into MMV (which may include more media than exclusively carousel) - much in the same way that clicking an image in a gallery launches full MMV rather than a lightbox of just those images in the carousel.
IMO, the current behavior is the intended/desired one.
