Tabs lost after opening Main page in app
Closed, ResolvedPublic0 Estimated Story PointsBUG REPORT

Description

Steps to replicate the issue (include links if applicable):

  • Have a lot of tabs open (in my case from before there were bookmarks)
  • Open Main page in app and also open one of the articles of top read after pressing back (I did some browsing around in the bookmarks / recommended reading list before but didn't open any article)

What happens?:

  • The number of tabs go down to like 5% of what it used to be
  • When tapping on the number of tabs it only shows these
  • It seems the tabs aren't fully lost maybe: when go to the Main page again and press back the number of open tabs gets reduced further but it then opens articles that I think were previously in my open tabs

What should have happened instead?:

No tabs should be closed/lost. Sorry I can't identify the cause of this better.

Software version (on Special:Version page; skip for WMF-hosted wikis like Wikipedia):

Android v50566-r-2026-02-04

thanks for filing @Prototyperspective!
@ABorbaWMF could you please try to reproduce this and give us an idea of how widepsread the problem might be?

It may be easier to see if tabs can get lost anyhow than reproducing it or at least I'm aware I don't have precise info how this occurred: I was just browsing around in the app to investigate for the backup issue such as whether there is a setting option to backup saved interests (settings, and interests page). It may have to do with opening an article of the interests and then one from the main feed, maybe it wasn't the Main page that I opened. If you let an LLM check the code maybe it does find what could be the cause for tabs being lost. Anyway it's a bit frustrating to have lost all my tabs and I imagine for some this can be big issue (most of my tabs weren't things I meant to continue reading or saving somewhere but this can be different for others). My reading history is still there but it's too many pages to go through them all to try to recreate which tabs were open. They aren't still there anymore when pressing back either - it had only 5 tabs still open of the many that I had and I think opening the Main page and/or article from the Most read tile on the Explore feed and pressing back also closed these few.
It's important to make sure data loss does not occur in apps. Nevertheless, I'd first of all top-prioritize making it possible to backup (and restore) other data of the app to some file. I really need to backup my saved interests and bookmarks but this is not possible.

@Prototyperspective Thank you for writing this up. I have been trying to reproduce it, but so far I have not seen it. Is it possible to record a screen video of this issue? I am currently testing on 50567-r-2026-02-04. Is this the same build you are testing?

@ABorbaWMF I don't know what caused this so I couldn't make a screen video. My tabs are now simply at 1 or 0 because the dozens of tabs got closed somehow.

I think I was looking at settings to check if there's functionality to backup, then recommended reading list pages to see if maybe there is a button there to backup at least the saved interests, and opening a few articles from the most read, I think the Epstein article in English and German and James van der Beek article in English, as well as the Main page somehow (maybe from the open tabs or probably via the Main page link in the feed).

No, the build is 50566-r-2026-02-04.

I don't think chances are very high that you can reproduce it (maybe an LLM can give some tip what could have caused most tabs to be lost in the code by looking at the code). Note that I did still have 5 or so tabs when this occurred, these then also got closed one after another when I reopened the Most read article. Probably would be better to take this as a reason to prioritize the functionality to backup things like tabs and saved interests. I thought maybe there is a folder on the device that has this which one could copy but that also doesn't exist so the only way to backup seems to be making screenshots of saved interests articles. Sorry I can't provide more or clearer clues what caused this.

Unable to reproduce on 50568-r-2026-02-24 and the last build as well. We will continue to keep an eye on it. Moving to sign-off for now.
