Laid off in Japan after 7 years. Offered 8 months severance. Do I have any leverage? by Silvergold94 in japanlife

Would you suggest I don’t sign before the deadline? Despite the risks mentioned in my other comments?

But then they could try to put me on PIP or build a case (even if it’s not legit) for termination due to performance, right? Also it might be quite toxic to keep working in a company where they are trying to let you go.

I heard in my company somebody refused to leave so they demoted the person. It’s apparently a practice in Japan to demote and push the person to resign.

They aren’t open to negotiate the amount. So it’s either I take it or I go to the legal route meaning perhaps much more money but also more stress, hassle and uncertainty over a long time.

It’s pretty high. I won’t need to work for 2 years with this 8 months severance.

I knew it could happen at any point of time as this is recurrent in the tech industry but I definitely didn’t expect this week.

I’m not in any hiring process but I’ve always kept an eye on the market so it’s not I’d struggle to go back to applying and interviewing, if I get the chance to have interviews.

Sorry all. My mistake. I read the paper too fast yesterday. You are right I’m not on garden leave yet. It would start once I sign and until mid July.

This Friday is just the deadline they give me to sign the paper.

I tried to negotiate an increase, mentioning my conversation with a labor lawyer but they keep their ground and aren’t open to negotiate the severance amount.

Gold is in sales! by [deleted] in Gold

There is. They have coins tied to the emperor for example. But precious metals and numismatic is really not a big thing here. I’m really not a SME but my impression is that offers available in the US or EU is way better and wider compared to Japan.

I think that’s the tax system which discourages people to invest into metals.

Thanks! It’s just it’s the only option for coins at the LCS where I buy. Some other LCS have other options.

I have 2. But I don’t think AMEX would know that. Would they?

No please they are. Banks suck here. I don’t have time to expand now but I have really countless of situations. I saw a lot on Reddit as well. In one sentence: they are extremely inefficient and have 90s old tech.

I emphasized today’s situation about a CC company but my post was also for all the other banking situations I experienced in Japan, which to me have similar problems. I could have been clearer so thank you for the feedback.

I agree that it’s out of touch with what most people can experience. If that offended some, I’d understand and I’m sorry of having shared something they feel is disconnected from the tough reality of life. I thought everybody can share a frustration linked to an institution regardless of income.

The debate about it’s a bank or it’s not … this, to me, it’s looking at the finger because it’s not the point of the message and it’s a detail that holds little value in this conversation.

It’s okay. I’m not here to collect upvotes.

When the wise man points at the moon, the fool looks at the finger. Bank or not, I don’t care.

Because I shared with them 3 months of banking statement as they requested.

I think they are couple of additional countries where credit cards are great. All financial hubs to start with.

Banks in Japan. International or Japanese, it doesn’t matter. They all suck here. It’s an industry problem in my opinion.
