Opened April 2025, finished January 2026… honestly impressive commitment.

As someone who lives here: yes, this is normal. And no, it doesn’t actually make things clearer.

Santa’s crate-digging skills are elite 🎄 That lineup is basically a city pop starter pack.

What are some things you wished you had brought with you when you came to Japan? by Mitty-14- in movingtojapan

That’s such a good point. I hadn’t even thought about sentimental items, but that makes a lot of sense—especially when you’re far from home. A quilt your grandmother made sounds really comforting. And the tortilla press example is great too, thank you!

Thanks! Can I ask why deodorant and toothpaste in Japan don’t work well for you?

Costco desserts really said “portion control is optional.”

In Japan, We Call This Kind of Bossy Coworker an “Otsubone” by Mitty-14- in antiwork

[–]Mitty-14-[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I wrote “usually,” but to be honest, “Otsubone” is a woman-only term in Japanese.

There isn’t really a male equivalent.

We do have words like pawahara (short for power harassment) and morahara (moral harassment), but those describe types of abusive behavior, not a specific kind of person.

They’re more like workplace concepts than character labels.

For men, it’s usually much vaguer— people would just say someone is “annoying” or “a pain.”

So yeah… the fact that only the female version has a specific label is kind of sexist 😭

Explaining the pronunciation is a bit tricky, but think of it like "Karaoke" or "Yosemite." It’s O-tsu-bo-ne.

Just like in "Karaoke," each syllable is short and flat. No long vowels, no stress on any part.

Spot on. Japanese "Karens" are masters of passive-aggression.

By the way, this "Otsubone" is the exact same person from my previous post who ignored the souvenirs I gave her.

Most of us keep our toothbrushes in our lockers and brush our teeth right after lunch.

I could go on for a long time about manga, haha. I read a lot, so it’s hard to narrow it down. But I guess I tend to like more realistic, grounded stories. What kind of genres do you like?

100-yen shop baskets are seriously useful. My place is full of them too.

I usually end up throwing away hospital cards 😂 They feel pretty outdated these days.

Thanks for sharing!
