I moved internationally and it took NINE months for my baby to arrive by Lucidical in Workspaces

I went SecretLab for the Magnus Pro desk and monitor arms. I also got my chair from them, though it isn't pictured.

The center monitor is an OLED AlienWare ultrawide that is so expensive but is so niiiiiiice. The side monitors are both ASUS and were much more reasonable.

The PC is an HP Omen series. After years and years of saving I finally got myself exactly what I wanted and picked the one with all the highest end options. Then I bought another hard drive for it.

The webcam and mic are Razer. The speakers are SteelSeries Arena 3. The headset is Steelseries Arctis Pro Wireless. The keyboard is a Corsair mechanical and the mouse is a RedDragon MMO mouse. The Mouse has seriously impressed me. It was very inexpensive compared to the competition. I got a mouse with a numpad on the side for gaming but I've started using it everywhere.

EDIT: The tissue box is Conad and my daughter made me the coasters in Kindergarden :)

The SecretLab desk and monitor arms are the real hero here. They are the easiest and most elegant I have ever worked with. They have removable magnetic wire routing tracks in the arms and there's a huge cable management compartment at the back.

My case was exceptionally horrible. At the destination country my wife and I arrived on different visas. Hers was a student visa, which allowed her to stay long term even without a residence card, so they took their time getting her residence card. She had to be the one to handle receiving our things because she handled all the paperwork at the origin country. So we couldn't tell them to go ahead and ship until she had her card. Then the ship scheduled to carry our things was delayed due to weather. Then again. Then it finally departed but rerouted to a different country to evade an area where they suspected ships might be blown up thanks to global powers flexing. Then it finally got here and the local customs assumed that my wife was a man and it took months for customs to release our containers.

...

And yes I was working on a laptop the whole time.

In X-Men on Sega Genesis there is a level that you can't beat unless you press the physical RESET button on the console. The button that RESETS your game. The level has Mojo as the boss and they say some lore line before the level about needing to reboot the danger room but no one would ever think that literally means reset the game.

Swede considering moving to Malta, bad idea? by SuspiciousBoxcutter in malta

[–]Lucidical 94 points95 points  (0 children)

I'll DM details, but in short my answer is take a week long holiday here but live like the locals do, don't be a tourist. Walk and take the bus places, stay at a place where you can cook so you can shop the grocery stores and make your own dinner, get your feet on the ground and talk to people in different neighborhoods. You should know if you want to live here after that.

American who just moved to Malta here.

The people complaining about Malta being awful have no idea what awful looks like. I don't say that as an insult and I'm sure for their personal experiences it's very possible that they expect more/better. I say it because I've seen so very very much worse in the world. It isn't perfect here, but good wine and fiber internet are both extremely affordable :)

If you get remote work the digital nomad visa is pretty painless. The only downside is it doesn't count towards residency. The salaries here are less than half of what you can expect in San Diego (lived there myself briefly and visited often for work) but I rent a 3 bedroom apartment for less than what gets you MAYBE a studio over there. The digital nomad visa also allows you to bring your entire family including adult children if they are still financially dependent.

If you or your spouse are interested in getting a degree the University of Malta is a fantastic school and I've heard they have school to work programs. I can't say anything from personal experience but it sounds like a relatively inexpensive path to residency though not fully guaranteed.

When you get here, walk places a lot. People will see you daily and get to chatting and everyone is extremely friendly. The people at the convenience story, pharmacy, or even just folks who are walking their dog will remember you and you'll start seeing smiling faces whenever you walk by in no time.

The thing is in other EU countries I cannot stay via my own personal means. In Malta, I am able to stay through the digital nomad visa even if I am unable to find a local employer. I am also sending out my CV to other countries in the EU. I know for a fact that there are many employers who would want to hire me if they knew me and my skill set. Convincing someone to take the time to get to know me through automated filters is not always easy.

Many of the same things can be said in my home country. Disdain of foreigners is everywhere. I must admit, I was one of them many years ago. It is easy to look at something different and decide it is wrong. I am prepared to face prejudice and will continue to treat my fellow humans with decency regardless. I will heed your warnings and make sure I keep good records of all documentation including older versions if something is re-issued!

On the bright side, after living here long enough I suspect I will be able to adopt the local accent and my skin will have tanned enough I can pass as a local :)

Thank you, I replied and will be looking in to what you sent on Sunday! I have learned that almost everything in Malta is closed on Sunday which I half expected anyway so I will have plenty of time to look into things.

I am fully capable of staying in Malta under the digital nomad visa. I just prefer to find an employer so I have a path to residency. I meet with residency Malta on Monday to begin the digital nomad visa process.

Many people do not understand why the place they live is desirable to others. There are many reasons why one might want to live in Malta, and I am experienced enough to understand the difference between when something is attractive because I don't have it as opposed to actually better. One simple reason I desire Malta residency is because in my country I don't see how my children will afford college or to start a family of their own if they wish. In Malta that is much more achievable.

If you are interested in a continued conversation about the reasons a TCN would want to move to Malta, I would be happy to have a no-nonsense conversation about it based on my personal observations. I hear your concerns about treatment of TCNs and I absolutely believe they are real based on what I have seen. That unfortunately is true in many many countries around the world. Personally I am fortunate enough to have a rather in demand set of skills and if an employer wishes to exploit me I can confidently give them the finger and find another that will treat me with respect.

My experience is varied because my current employer has many projects and tends to place me where they need someone who can figure things out. My primary programming language is C++ writing lower level code but I have over a year professional experience in Java, C#, several web design scripting and programming languages, relational database scripting and administration, excel macros... among others. My most recent work has been largely administrative as my employer decided to transition me to be project lead for a new project but... well I have a good relationship with my supervisor and they know I am looking to relocate so they know to find a new project lead. Any place I apply will receive my full Europass CV but i do not wish to write more in a public forum. My citizenship is United States.

My self imposed goal was to buy a new PC in 2021, but life has not given me the budget. With these I could finally do it. I would take a field trip to the nearest micro center and shop the rest the very next weekend.

Fellow men, Im 16 and want to shave my balls without my parents finding out, we only have beard shavers, what is the quickest, cheapest easiest way to do this? by AnAnonymousUsername0 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Lucidical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a bottle of Nair. Get the one that appears to be marketed to girls, it's gentler. Follow the instructions, particularly about testing on a small area first to make sure it isn't gonna mess up your skin and the "do not leave on longer than x minutes" part. As far as parents not finding out... hide the bottle or trash it after 1 use. It smells pretty strong but if you shower after using it the smell is gone from the room by the end of the shower.

Source: I like being clean shaven and have been doing so for ~20 years. I've used lots of methods. The Nair leaves your crotch feeling a bit weird night 1 but gives you baby-smoothness that lasts longer and is more thorough than any shaving method I've tried.
