We moved to NP last fall but bid on several houses in Chatham. Chatham is definitely a prettier town overall, the houses remind me of the Hamptons (with the exception of the large power lines that cut through town and give me sci fi fears)! But it’s also very spread out and depending on where you are (borough vs township) you could be facing a 10-15 min drive to the downtown/train. Our downtown in NP is nothing special IMO but it has the basics, a grocery store, produce store, butcher’s market, CVS, salons, doctors etc. We also live near the library and two playgrounds perfect for my toddler. Everything I need is basically in a 10 minute radius and that was one of the key factors that ultimately won me over NP: convenience. The places I was looking at in Chatham I felt I couldn’t walk/bike to amenities (unless we lived right in the borough) and having come from the city I felt parts of Chatham (and Summit and SH) felt too isolated, not even a playground nearby. Also to clarify another post: I work in the city and there are a few direct trains from NP and Murray Hill to NY Penn in the morning and evening rush hour. Parking is never an issue.
