21-Day Vacation in Nov: Splitting our Tokyo stay (Shinjuku + Ginza/Harajuku) vs. staying in one place? by Bright-Acadia5139 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Background_Map_3460 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are planning to split the time in Tokyo (for example Tokyo/Kyoto/Tokyo) then of course it’s fine to stay in two different locations.

If you are planning those 11 days solid in Tokyo, then it’s a waste of time to move to a different location. It’s not really going to be that much of a difference

Yasukuni Shrine: Guided Tours Available? Advice on Route Inside and the Yukushan War Museum by DavidSan_YYZ in JapanTravelTips

[–]Background_Map_3460 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“ just trying to learn the history from what they show us”

This is the problem though. What the museum shows you is a revisionist/ultranationalist view of Japan’s role in World War II, not history as historians and actual victims know it.

According to the museum, Japan was the victim, Japan helped southeast Asia break free of western influence, Japan was forced to attack Pearl Harbor, Japan didn’t really do anything in Nanjing. Unit 731? Nothing.

I’m half Japanese and American, and both countries have committed atrocities that they whitewash and ignore. One must actually look at the facts and ignore propaganda.

I was so impressed when I went to Germany, how they teach about World War II and the holocaust. Really impressive that they look at their history in World War II honestly

Yasukuni Shrine: Guided Tours Available? Advice on Route Inside and the Yukushan War Museum by DavidSan_YYZ in JapanTravelTips

[–]Background_Map_3460 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The shrine yes, the museum no. Absolutely ludicrous claims that basically Japan was forced to attack Pearl Harbor, and that they liberated southeast Asia from western influence and were welcomed with open arms. Nanjing massacre was downplayed, and again made to look like Japan was the victim

Yasukuni Shrine: Guided Tours Available? Advice on Route Inside and the Yukushan War Museum by DavidSan_YYZ in JapanTravelTips

[–]Background_Map_3460 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the museum is the main issue, the shrine less so. The museum completely alters and ignores history. Hopefully you have a strong understanding of what happened during World War II in Asia, and recognize the total inaccuracies of the museum

Where to sell a like new/lightly used watch? by theintersecter in japanlife

[–]Background_Map_3460 [score hidden]  (0 children)

You may change your preference once you find out how little you will get from a store like hard off etc.

You said an inexpensive Casio. Even though it’s new and in the box, a store like that will probably give you 10%?

I spent $80 for metro (Suica) in Tokyo in 3.5 weeks for one person. I had an hour long trip to and from Chiba, but the rest were in Tokyo. Is there a way to save money? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]Background_Map_3460 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP have you actually calculated how little this is per day? I am surprised that as a tourist, you spent that little traveling every day for 3 1/2 weeks

Suica issue by terinoru in JapanTravelTips

[–]Background_Map_3460 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps the problem is you set your region to Japan? There is no need to do that. Keep your region as normal, open Apple wallet and press the + in the top right hand corner. Add Suica or any other of the 4 Japanese options. They are all the same.

Make sure to load with your credit card during Japanese operating hours

Title: Tips for using the aircon (エアコン) in Japan without breaking the bank? 💴❄️ by MastaPitsu in japanresidents

[–]Background_Map_3460 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I set the AC to 23 or use the dry function.

It’s on all the time while I am at home, and I keep it on if I’m going out for no more than an hour. Off if it’s longer than that

Mine are Daikin, top of the line 6 years ago when I bought them (have three for a 3LDK, one large and two small)

I’m not going to be uncomfortable in my own place. If you want to save some money on air-conditioning at home during the day, go to a public library or somewhere like that where you can sit all day and be cool on someone else’s dime

I have a 11 day Japan trip coming up in November. Will I regret spending 5-6 of those days in Okinawa? by mellofello808 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Background_Map_3460 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely do not stay five days in Naha. I only stay in Naha the night before my early flight out of Okinawa.

I love Hawaii, go there every year, Okinawa is not Hawaii. Beaches are nothing like Hawaii, nor waves. Tons of American military bases. Maybe two days max to drive around to some of the World War II historical sites etc.

Potential move from Japan/How to move large sum of YEN and keep as YEN by Prior-Lengthiness-92 in JapanFinance

[–]Background_Map_3460 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Even though the exchange rate is poor, it’s highly unlikely it’s going to get better anytime in the near future. That money would be better served taken to the United States and put into a high yield savings account or invested.

Keeping it in yen, especially if you are unsure you are coming back is not a good financial decision. Even if you do come back, realistically the dollars you made in the high-yield savings account back in the US could be exchanged for more yen if the exchange rate gets worse for yen, or bring you back to even if the exchange rate improved

Suica Card - How much to load for daily use of metro over 2 weeks in Tokyo and Osaka? by Existing-Evidence885 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Background_Map_3460 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it’s not as far as spending goes, but if someone has a credit card that gives cash back or bonus points for travel, it would be better to use a credit card.

Putting money on Suica is shopping, not travel, as far as the credit card category goes.
