Fee-on

it's a fairly common name in Wales

[–]MrPleasant150 302 points303 points  (2 children)

As a welshman I love that it's become a popular name for trans women and enbies. Had a Dutch exchange student living with me that had the name.

[–]SquidTheRidiculousDa Alfabet Maphia sends they/thems regards 59 points60 points  (0 children)

My new name comes from Greek, and is an homage to a character in a book I was obsessed with as a child. I once had a Greek dude get really pissed at me for choosing the name despite not being ethnically Greek.

He was so mad he complained to my also-Not-Greek friend Alexander.

[–]Alexis_Awen_FernReddit admins hate her! 69 points70 points  (7 children)

Welsh names go hard. The first name I chose for myself was Awen :3

Welsh has some bangers. Lloyd, Morgan, Llewellyn. Some real good stuff in there.

[–]Big_Distance2141 2 points3 points  (3 children)

It's pronounced like "Amen" as you would say in church?

[–]ramengirlxo 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Wales is a beautiful country and someplace I’m very glad I’ve had the chance to visit.

Folks in some of the smaller villages are so isolated, but traveling as an openly queer, trans woman, I felt both safe and welcomed. If anything, folks really just wanted to know more about me and where I came from since they don’t usually get a ton of visitors. Huge shoutout to the wonderful people of Deri, would absolutely visit y’all again.

[–]MrPleasant150 44 points45 points  (12 children)

Lloyd (or llwyd) is entirely dependent on if you use an anglicised version of the name. Either Loid or Chloid

[–]derpfaceddargonthey call me the sandwich 29 points30 points  (8 children)

Chloid?!

[–]Biscuit642 18 points19 points  (6 children)

Ch as in the back of the throat breathy kinda sound. Like you're trying to say k but doing it in your throat. Ll is that sound. It's called a voiceless al-something or other fricative I don't remember.

[–]gulfrend🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights 31 points32 points  (0 children)

In Welsh, Ch is a letter and is the throaty, almost "throat clearing"-type breathy sound. "Ll" is an entirely different letter. To pronounce it as in "Llwyd", start pronouncing an "L" letter with your mouth. When your tongue is behind your teeth, keep your teeth close together and lips open, and push air around the sides of your tongue and out the side of your lips. Almost like a cats hiss. The name "Llwyd" is pronounced similar to "Ll-oid"

Source: I'm Welsh

[–]Aegis_13Bitch Bastard 17 points18 points  (4 children)

Voiceless alveolar lateral fricatives shouldn't make any sound in the throat. The noise should be all in the air passing through your mouth

[–]PVetliPsychometabolist; Head Technomancer of North Central Positronics 21 points22 points  (2 children)

Alveolar lateral fricatives

I like your funny words, magic man

[–]maclainanderson 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Alveolar - tongue touches the "alveolar ridge", the really bumpy bit behind the teeth

Lateral - air passes through the sides of the mouth, around the tongue

Fricative - air passes through a narrow opening, causing friction that makes the noise (th and f are also fricatives)

Hope that helps

[–]Aegis_13Bitch Bastard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had to look up the term based on what they said lol

[–]Aegis_13Bitch Bastard 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Never heard it described, or pronounced like that. Only ever heard Ll in Welsh make a sorta 'breathy' L sound made by putting the tip of the tongue up against that ridge on the top of your mouth, almost or barely touching the base of your top front two teath, and breathing out (Idk how exactly to describe the sound). Then again I've only known one Welshman it could've been his accent/dialect

Giving yourself a name is hard.
It's gotta hold some meaning for you, it's gotta sound nice, it's gotta fit you, it's got to be cool, it can't be too cringe, it can't be too boring, you can't just take it from someone else because then it's already got baggage...

[–]Jomotaku 40 points41 points  (5 children)

Idk one of my friends who became a guy just named himself Leon and its a great name even tho there are a lot of Leons

[–]AnonWithAHatOn 17 points18 points  (1 child)

[–]Jomotaku 21 points22 points  (0 children)

[–]Plushie_Holly:3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some people rush it, I spent 7 years deciding on a name, and then procrastinated another 6 before getting round to transitioning, and only used the name before that in cases where people asked "what's your name, Ma'am?" and responding with my male name would have been awkward.

[–]thetasigma22 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When I came out as gay the first thing my parents did was say gay men get poop on their penises when they have sex

[–]UnicornHostels 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Anything that reaffirms your love and support to the person who came out. Not ignoring the subject all together

[–]chatte__lunatique🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights 23 points24 points  (0 children)

No, best response would be showing explicit support and love for his daughter in an extremely important and vulnerable moment for her, instead of completely brushing it off. Could it be worse? Yeah, by a lot — take it from someone who had worse. But it sure as hell could be better, too.

[–]thyme_cardamom 10 points11 points  (5 children)

Only if you grew up with abusive parents and don't know what actual support looks like

Saying the parents are abusive based on this little interraction not knowing their dynamic is actually insane
