Gulliver is a seagull in the Animal Crossing series. In the first-generation games, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, he is a sailor who washes up on the shore of the player's town. In Animal Crossing: Wild World and Animal Crossing: City Folk, he is instead an astronaut who flies over town in a UFO that can be shot down by the player. When helped by the player, he rewards them with special furniture, usually artifacts from around the world that cannot be obtained anywhere else.

His name is a reference to both his species and the 1726 book Gulliver's Travels, which is about a man named Lemuel Gulliver who travels to the far corners of the earth, before being shipwrecked and washing up on the shore of a previously undiscovered land.

Characteristics

Appearance

Artwork from Doubutsu no Mori.

Gulliver is a white seagull with an orange and black beak and thick orange eyebrows. He is dressed with a sailor hat with a blue ribbon, a white scarf tied into a ribbon, and a blue sailor shirt with white linings. In Wild World, City Folk, and 🎬 Gekijōban Doubutsu no Mori, he wears a space suit, with his beak sticking out of the helmet. His big round eyes have black irises and blue pupils shaped like diamond stars.

Personality

Gulliver loves sleeping and talking in his sleep at the same time after washing up on the shore of the town's beach. He will not wake up until the player talks to him multiple times. If the player then listens to him talking about the stories of his adventures, answers his questions about where he was heading, or helps him find his communicator parts, he then becomes grateful and rewards the player with a special kind of furniture the following day.

In Wild World, City Folk, and Gekijōban Doubutsu no Mori, Gulliver claims to be from outer space and appears to be unfamiliar with life on Earth.

References to Nintendo franchises

When speaking to the player, Gulliver often references other Nintendo franchises, usually through a story of how he encountered a character or location on a past adventure.

In Animal Crossing

In Wild World

  • When asking the player if they had previously made contact with extraterrestrial life, he asks if they have met a "certain bounty hunter who can turn into a ball" or a "smallish fox" who "flies a fighter." He adds that the player might have seen the fighter, referencing the Arwing being a furniture item.[4] These are references to Samus Aran of the Metroid series and Fox of the Star Fox series.
  • When questioning the player's "strange, alien ways," he mentions that it looks like flowers could bloom from their head, possibly a reference to the Pikmin from the series of the same name.[5]

In City Folk

In New Leaf

  • When agreeing to help him, he can say that he has not met "such a noble skipper since old Bobbery of Rogueport," referencing the character and location from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.[7]
  • When agreeing to help him, he can say that he has not met "someone so willing to help a total stranger since the residents of Ricco Harbor," referencing the location from Super Mario Sunshine.[8]
  • When declining to help him, he can say that "the chill of the Ice Cavern is nothing compared to getting the cold shoulder," referencing the location from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.[9]
  • When correctly guessing Italy as the location Gulliver was headed to, he mentions "that plumber guy," referring to Mario.[10]
  • He can mention having previously washed up on Isle Delfino from Super Mario Sunshine.[11]
  • He can say that his situation is a "fuzzy pickle," referencing dialog from the photo-man in EarthBound, who tells Ness to say "fuzzy pickles" before taking his photo.[12]
  • One of the regions the player can guess that Gulliver was headed to is Yoshi's Island.

In Animal Crossing Plaza

  • He can mention that the plaza is "not as nice as Windfall," referencing the island from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.[13]

In New Horizons

  • When agreeing to help him, he can say that he has not "gotten a reception this sweet and bubbly since I washed up at ol' Coralcola," referencing a location in the 1990 Nintendo Entertainment System game StarTropics.[14]
  • When declining to help him, he can say that he has not "received a cold shoulder this icy since my brush with the Snomad fleet," referencing the antagonists of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.[15] This piece of dialog contains a typo, as the correct spelling is "Snowmad."
  • One of his possible lines when awakened is "But, verily, it be the nature of dreams to end...", a quote from The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening; he later mentions that he "heard a fish say it once."
  • Prior to its removal in version 2.0, when the player scans his amiibo card and tries to invite him, the last line of dialogue says, "Click! Beep, beep, beep...." This is a reference to EarthBound, where the same line appears after the player calls someone on the telephone.

Appearances

First-generation Animal Crossing

Artwork from Animal Crossing.
"Aaaah...Uuuuh..."
— Gulliver, Animal Crossing

In every first-generation Animal Crossing game, Gulliver washes up on the beach on a random weekday once a week.[nb 1] When the player wakes him up by speaking to him multiple times, he tells them an unbelievable and dramatic story about his adventures at sea. Afterward, he gives the player a random furniture item to express his gratitude. In Doubutsu no Mori, he gives the player a random regular furniture item. Beginning in Doubutsu no Mori+, he gives the player one of 20 unique furniture items based on real-world objects and monuments.

In the Japanese versions of the game, Gulliver speaks entirely in katakana, distinguishing him as a foreigner unaccustomed to speaking Japanese; he may even speak coherent English in the middle of his sentences at times (as opposed to simply using loanwords).

Beginning in Doubutsu no Mori+, if Gulliver is set to appear in player's town on a day they visit Animal Island, he can be seen floating toward their town's beach during the boat rides to and from the island. If the player has already seen Gulliver by entering the acre he is washed up in, he will not appear during the boat ride.[nb 2]

In Wild World

"Mommy...Is that you? Gimme 5 more minutes, Mom..."
— Gulliver, Animal Crossing: Wild World

In Animal Crossing: Wild World, Gulliver is no longer a sailor, but an astronaut that infrequently flies over the player's town in a typical UFO styled spacecraft, called Porpoise 5000, a possible reference to the ship that Captain Olimar uses in the Pikmin series, called the Dolphin.

Gulliver's U.F.O. appears on a random weekday, even when it is raining or snowing, at any time of the day. Booker will know nothing about Gulliver's appearance, since he does not pass through the town gates. The event of his U.F.O. appearing is triggered by the clock, and it will only come into view if the final digit of the time is a two or a seven, as well as if no other special visitor is in town (this includes Tortimer, Redd, and even Mr. Resetti). It cannot appear if the player is in a building.

If shot down with a Slingshot, the U.F.O. will crash into one of the many signposts located throughout the town. At the crash site, the player will find an unconscious Gulliver, who, after waking up and doing a quick survey of his wrecked spacecraft, discovers that five of its parts broke off when it made impact with the earth. The player can help the astronaut regain his ship's lost parts, which can be found scattered about the town. If all five parts are returned to Gulliver before 6 AM, he will reward the player with one of his rare exotic items. Gulliver and his spaceship then disappear the next time the game is played.

In City Folk

Artwork from City Folk.
Gulliver's UFO on the beach in City Folk.
"Ugh...Gimme a break...There's no...No school today..."
— Gulliver, Animal Crossing: City Folk

In Animal Crossing: City Folk, he retains the same appearance as before in Animal Crossing: Wild World. His spacecraft can be seen flying about the same height as a floating balloon, though much faster. The player can shoot at him with a Slingshot, causing his ship to malfunction and appear the next day on the beach. During this time, a piece of his spacecraft will land somewhere in the town. He takes a while to regain consciousness, usually about five attempts of talking to him. When he wakes up, he will survey his surroundings and make unusual remarks about the player's appearance. He will ask the player for help, to find his spaceship part, which appears as a small, cog-like item on the ground. When given the part for his ship, he will give the player one of his rare items.

Gulliver's U.F.O. in City Folk.
Icon for a Spaceship Part.

In this game, Gulliver's U.F.O. can only appear from Monday to Thursday during the first ten minutes of an hour, and enters town when the final digit of the time hits 2 or 7. It is not guaranteed to appear in the first time slot after starting the game, and occasionally the player may have to wait several hours before it appears. Also, it generally only appears when there are no other visitors in town; however it can appear when Katie, Kaitlin, or Mr. Resetti are present. It always makes two passes over the town on each appearance (the second pass begins a few seconds after the U.F.O. disappears over the cliff at the edge of town), moving at half the speed that the player runs, and flies on the top row of the 2nd, 3rd or 4th acres from the top of town, which is the same path that the balloons take.

It is possible for Gulliver's U.F.O. and a balloon to appear at the same time, and on the same path. If this happens, the U.F.O. will pass through the balloon.

In New Leaf

"Uh, unnnnnn... I am the alpha male..."
— Gulliver, Animal Crossing: New Leaf

Gulliver appears in Animal Crossing: New Leaf as he does in Animal Crossing, with his sailor outfit, washing up on the shore of the beach. To wake him up, the player may either use the megaphone and say Gulliver's name into the 3DS's microphone while being adjacent to him, or try to talk to him a number of times. Once awoken, he will ask the player where he was heading before he washed up on shore, providing the player with key information about his destination, a country in the real world, such as the United States or France. When answered, Gulliver may send a letter the next day containing a present from the country he is visiting. Phrases that are said by Gulliver include:

"Oh! No! That's the port side! Starboard's on the right... It's because all of the starfish are right-handed... Zzz..."

"Nah, mom... Just give me... Five more minutes..."

"Nnnnnn... Cinnamon buns aren't used as currency... Not yet, anyway..."

"Nnnnnnnn... Don't do that... My beak's not a can opener..."

"Zzz... GAH! Nope, I'm still sleeping. Zzz..."

100 Bells NL Icon.png If Gulliver notes that the guess is incorrect, he will send a letter containing a chocolate coin. The chocolate coin looks exactly like 100 Bells, except that it may be eaten, and may be sold for 25 Bells at Re-Tail. The player can also give the chocolate coin to Dr. Shrunk to obtain an emotion.

In New Horizons

A buried item spurting water out of the sand. It can possibly be a communicator part.
The player digs up a communicator part.
"Wait-I don't see a pizza! Where am I? Who are you? Who am I?..."
— Gulliver, Animal Crossing: New Horizons

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Gulliver reprises his role as a special visitor, and sometimes can be found lying unconscious on the beach on random weekdays (no more than once a week, and typically once every 2-3 weeks once the island is fully built). Like the previous entries of the game, he can be woken up by repeatedly talking to him, hitting him with a net, or in the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition immediately with the megaphone. However, unlike past titles, he will recognize the player if they have helped him before. When he wakes, he tells the player that he's fallen off his boat and has washed up ashore, but does not put much thoughts into it as it happened several times before. Trying to reunite with his crew, Gulliver will try to call them though his cellphone—called "communicator" by him, only to promptly realize that it is broken. Unable to call for help, Gulliver will then ask the player to assist him in finding his communicator parts buried somewhere along the beach for a total of five of them; their locations are identified similar to how manila clams are found, by small holes which spurt water in the sand.

Once all the communicator parts have been found and returned to him, Gulliver will manage to contact his crew to take him back. He remains on the player's island for the rest of the day, and if talked to he will repeatedly try to check his cellphone for any news, seemingly hinting in his breath that his crewmates are not really eager to see him again while deluding himself with the desire of a great comeback party. The next day, the player will find a gift in their mailbox as a reward. If there are multiple players on the island, Gulliver may discover that his communicator is once again missing parts when other players approach him.

These rewards from Gulliver cannot be re-ordered from the catalog again in Nook Shopping.

Additionally, Gulliver is now responsible for the obtainment of the golden shovel; if Gulliver has been helped 30 times, the player will find the golden shovel DIY recipe in the mail instead of the usual limited gift. Helping Gullivarrr does not count toward the 30 times.

Any communicator parts that are found but not returned to Gulliver will become rusted parts the following day. If Gulliver has successfully reassembled his communicator, the next day there will still be at least one rusted part in the recycling bin at Resident Services. These parts are required to craft the robot hero DIY item, but otherwise have no other use. If the player does not recover Gulliver's communicator parts, he will leave at 5 a.m. the next day.

Prior to its removal in version 2.0, when the player scans Gulliver's amiibo card and tries to invite him, he will say:

Ahoy there! Gulliver here. Who's this? Wait. Are you that loan shark?
Oh! It's you, Player! Phew. Thought I'd have to go off the grid again.
Well, good to hear from you! So, what's the scuttlebutt? Did you need something?
Aye aye! Camping! Sounds like tons o' fun.
What's that you said? You hear that crackling noise? It's my phone. You're cutting out...
HELLO? HELLLOOOO? I CAN'T HEAR YOU!
Sheesh. This thing is always on the fritz. Click! Beep, beep, beep…

Gullivarrr

Main article: Gullivarrr

Beginning in the 1.3.0 Free Summer Update, a similar character named Gullivarrr can wash ashore and will give the player a similar quest, although the player now has to find the communicator itself by diving. Once the communicator has been returned, Gullivarrr will reward the player with an item in the Pirate Series or a pirate-themed clothing item.

Like with Gulliver, Gullivarrr will remain until 5 a.m. the next morning, regardless of whether he is helped by the player.

In amiibo Festival

Gulliver cameos in a few scenarios, most involving him washing up on the beach and the player attempting to wake him up. His amiibo card is also compatible with the game, allowing him to move to the player's town, and be used in the amiibo card minigames.

In Pocket Camp

Main article: Gulliver's Ship

Gulliver appears in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, again as a sailor. He will show up on Sunburst Island with his boat and ask the player to give him old, unwanted furniture and clothing rather than selling it. If they give him 10 items, he will set sail on his boat for a few hours. When he returns to Sunburst Island, he will always give the player snacks as a reward for helping him. If the player gave Gulliver items he deemed "great" then Gulliver will sometimes return with a new villager that is automatically befriended and can be invited to the player's campsite at any time, or he may return with a map usable in Blathers's Treasure Trek that can unlock another villager.

In 🎬 Gekijōban Doubutsu no Mori, Gulliver pretends to be an alien. He appears when his UFO crashes into Animal Village and says that he has lost his spaceship parts. After Ai, Margie, Rosie, Alfonso, and recover what they think is the final spaceship part, Champ returns another one. The part found by Ai and the group turns out to be an actual alien, who thanks Ai and returns with its friends to parts unknown.

    Gender: Male
    Sign: Gemini
Profile: Gulliver spends much of his life falling off boats, and it seems to be having a bad impact on his long-term memory. He rarely remembers people, but that's OK—he always arrives bearing gifts!

    Trivia

    • In the first popularity poll held on the Doubutsu no Mori website, Gulliver ranked as the 21st most popular character, ranking above Chief but below Dotty.[16]
    • In a second popularity poll held on the Doubutsu no Mori+ website, Gulliver ranked as the 18th most popular character with 897 votes, ranking above Wisp but below Porter.[17]
    • In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, one of Gulliver's possible lines upon being awakened is "NO! Don't make me go back to space! It's cold and dark and-huh?" This seems to indicate that Gulliver did not enjoy his role as an astronaut in Wild World and City Folk.
    • Gulliver appears on the album cover of "K.K. Lament."
    • Other than Gullivarrr, another seagull, Gulliver also shares his birthday with Derwin.

    Notes

    1. The day he visits is determined upon loading the save file using the formula 1 + ((current_hour + ((current_month × 256) + current_day)) mod 5). 1 = Monday, 2 = Tuesday, 3 = Wednesday, 4 = Thursday, and 5 = Friday.
    2. Saving and reloading resets the game's flag for whether the player has seen Gulliver, allowing him to show up during the boat ride again.
    3. 3.0 3.1 Re-Tail sell price; if item can be sold at Timmy and Tommy's store, it is 80% of the sell price; if item can be sold to Leila at Tortimer Island, it is 5% of the sell price.

    1. "Well, that's the end of that! Before I go, I just want to give you this small token! I found it while sailing the Karagol Sea. I don't really know what it is, but I'm sure it's pretty valuable!"
    2. "You see many strange things at sea, my friend. I could tell you about them all day and never get tired! Like the time I saw a real ghost ship... Or when I captured a band of pirates! Or when I fought the sea snakes at Pinnacle Rock! Wait a minute... That wasn't me! Ha! But the rest of it's 100% true! I guarantee it! No, really! It's all true! Except that last bit!"
    3. "I wonder if my sweetie Mary in Toad Town has been doing OK since I left her... And I think of Helen often, since I left her heartbroken in Hyrule... Oh, Hunh? Oh, no...those are the names of my goldfish! I get one in every port I see. I hate leaving them behind!"
    4. "My memory is terrible. I can't recall if your kind as "made contact" before. Tell me, have you met a certain bounty hunter who can turn into a ball? Or perhaps a smallish fox? He flies a fighter... Perhaps you've seen it?
    5. "There are so many things I would like to learn about your strange, alien ways. Is your head made of animal or vegetal matter? It looks somewhat like a seed pod. How I would love to see the flowers that would bloom from your head-bulb!"
    6. "Oh man, listen here. You've simply got to hear this! I'm boating across the sea with nothing but water for miles, when a MASSIVE squid surfaces... With a twist of its long, slick body, the thing creates a whirlpool...that swallows my ship whole!"
    7. "You mean it?! I haven't met such a noble skipper since old Bobbery of Rogueport! Not even close! Now, I suppose we should start with anything and everything I can remember about where I was going! ..."
    8. "Oh, thanks! I haven't met someone so willing to help a total stranger since the residents of Ricco Harbor! All right, I'll tell you everything I remember about my destination before my mind goes blank. ..."
    9. "...The chill of the Ice Cavern is nothing compared to getting the cold shoulder... Don't be one of those uncaring city folk my mom warned me about. Take time to help your fellow bird! Now, I'll start by telling you everything I can remember. ..."
    10. "Italy! That's it! That's it! I'm sure I was going to Italy! Grazie! Thank you! I'm both super thankful and thoroughly impressed! Thanks to you, I'll be able to eat plates and plates of delicious Italian pasta, just like that plumber guy!"
    11. "This town...is definitely one of the smallest ports I've ever been to. With all the seas I've traveled and towns I've been to, this one feels like a tiny hamster cage! I'm not saying it feels TOO small, though. Just, you know, I've seen bigger. Hoo, now Isle Delfino! THAT was a nice beach to wash up on..."
    12. "I can't seem to remember a bunch of stuff! It's like amnesia! I think I had that once. Maybe? So just where was I headed? Oh, man! This sure is a fuzzy pickle! I'm in way over my head here!"
    13. "Hey, where'd I wash up this time? Seems like a nice place! Not as nice as Windfall, but still a nice place to be!"
    14. "Really?! Wow! I haven't gotten a reception this sweet and bubbly since I washed up at ol' Coralcola!"
    15. "Oof. I haven't received a cold shoulder this icy since my brush with the Snomad fleet... Come on, you have to help! It's like wise old folks always say. "Do unto others, something something"!"
