Ai (あい) is the main character of 🎬 Gekijōban Doubutsu no Mori. Representing the player character from the Animal Crossing games, she is a young human girl who leaves home to live on her own in Animal Village. Throughout the film, she befriends and helps out the residents of the village. She becomes good friends with Margie and Rosie and has several encounters with a mysterious human boy named Yū.
Ai is voiced by Japanese voice actress and singer Yui Horie, who has voiced characters in many anime films and series.
Characteristics
Appearance
Ai is a human girl with high red pigtails. She has large, anime-styled eyes that each have one small black eyelash. Unlike most player appearances in the games, which normally have a red triangle for a nose, she has a small, round nose.
Ai wears a yellow bolero at the beginning of the movie, one of several possible starting outfits for the player in Animal Crossing: Wild World. She changes into other outfits during various points in the movie, such as a blossom shirt, a swimsuit, and a kimono designed by Margie.
Personality
Ai is characterized as kind-hearted and caring toward her neighbors in Animal Village. She is initially unsure of herself, especially after Margie moves away, but she gains confidence throughout the film and by the end she feels like a true resident of the village.
Relationships
Ai frequently writes to her mother, who is never shown or heard from. Shortly after moving into Animal Village, Ai becomes good friends with Margie and Rosie and is often seen alongside them. She looks up to Whitney, who consoles her after Margie moves away.
Plot overview
After being driven to Animal Village by Kapp'n and meeting Pelly and Mayor Tortimer, Ai gets the key to her house from Tom Nook and begins working part-time for him, making deliveries to the village's residents. After meeting Margie during a delivery to the Able Sisters, the two become good friends and Margie shares her dream of becoming a designer. Some time later, Ai becomes depressed after Margie moves away unexpectedly to pursue her dream, before being consoled by Whitney and a letter from Margie, who tells Ai to pursue her own dreams.
In the months following her arrival in Animal Village, Ai finds several notes in bottles containing mysterious messages supposedly from an alien that instruct her to plant cedar trees around town for a miracle to occur during the Winter Festival. During the Winter Festival, Gulliver crash lands in Animal Village and Ai and the other residents gather his missing ship parts. Upon returning what appears to be the final part, the part transforms into a UFO-like alien, who thanks Ai before returning to its fellow UFOs in the sky. The UFO draws a constellation in the shape of Ai's face, leading Tortimer to crown her the winner of the Winter Festival.
After the Winter Festival, Ai begins to feel like a true member of the village and hopes that one day she will discover her own dream like Margie had.

- In Japanese and Chinese, "Ai" means "love."
- When Ai and Yū's names in Japanese are combined, it translates to "Evening Love."
- Yu and Ai's names might be a pun on "you" and "I."
