I was first exposed to anime when I was a kid sleeping over at my friend’s house. He had a collection of anime VHS tapes that his Dad bought and would put on to keep us occupied. In no particular order, since I don’t remember the precise one, the first anime I watched were the Namek saga from Dragon Ball Z, a Doraemon movie, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, and Tonari no Totoro.

However, for most of my childhood, anime was mostly on my peripheral radar. I knew about it, but I was more into video games and movies back then. That changed in high school when my friend recommended Initial D. After I watched that, I watched Great Teacher Onizuka, from which I got my user name, and dived into the anime/manga abyss, from which I haven’t climbed out of nor have any desire to.

Anime has become the medium that’s influenced me the most. Some of my favorites have inspired me to rethink my own life. I keep my mind as open as possible because it’s broadened my view of what art can do and what kinds of interesting stories can be told.
