Ikoku Nikki

Makio Koudai has always lived life on her own terms. While she maintains a small circle of friends and a steady career as a novelist, she is very introverted and indifferent to social norms. Her relationship with her older sister Minori suffered as a result—her sister's constant criticism during their childhood shaped a lasting estrangement.

At thirty-five, Makio's life is disrupted when Minori and her husband die suddenly in an accident. In the wake of their deaths, Makio meets Asa Takumi for the first time, her fifteen-year-old niece who feels uncertain of her future. With no relatives willing to care for Asa, Makio takes her in despite her hesitance about building a bond with a stranger. Asa struggles to process the loss of her parents and the loneliness that follows, while reminders of her mother quietly shape aunt and niece's routines and interactions.

Through writing and the slow unraveling of their assumptions about family, Makio and Asa learn to understand one another and themselves on their own terms.

Slice of Life, as storytelling genre, is capable of delivering profound perspectives on our daily lives. That is what Ikoku Nikki is able to showcase as an anime in this genre. Throughout its episodes, it dared to ask questions one is not brave enough to ask themselves. It does not know a single answer to these questions, but it plays in that area where they are found and encourages you to stay there to discover it for yourself. Characters that were meant to be supportive draw out reactions like "I will be the person I want to become!" and "I will not anyone dictate my ... feelings". This show's scenes will stay with you long after you've seen them through what was said and even what wasn't. Even through its darkest themes, it is able to say "Life isn't over because we're still alive". It is beautiful through and through.

Mixed Feelings

The basic premise of Ikoku Nikki is interesting, and the themes being explored are universal and done realistically. However, there are many problems with its execution: its constant time-shifting scenes make it confusing; it tries to pack too many hinting details that water down its comprehensibility; there is a general lack of logical progression in the story, and the artwork and music are plain comparing to the standard of the time.

Even in the slice-of-life genre one can objectively argue that it's flawed. Natsume Yuujinchou, which is made by the same studio Shuka, is of similar kind where daily experiences are conveyed and explored, but each ... episode tends to have a unifying theme and the progression of the story is highly coherent. Ikoku Nikki, by contrast, receives a lot of hypes for its originality which blinds us from focusing on its many flaws.

Ikoku Nikki is, in short, a huge disappointment. If I had to choose one word to describe the entire series, it would be "superficiality," but let me explain.

The main theme is the protagonist Asa's grief, and to be honest, I wasn't displeased with how she manages to "unlock" herself and truly move forward. The problem is the eight episodes it takes for this to happen, episodes in which the protagonist seems completely disinterested. Don't get me wrong, that's precisely the theme: the protagonist doesn't feel like crying after her parents' death, and that's what makes it interesting. But turning it all into a slice of ... life and moving on as if nothing had happened, making Asa's parents almost strangers to her, and where the slightest hint of drama is resolved by her aunt and her stock phrases, makes everything feel inconsistent.

Throughout the 12 episodes, the theme of grief is almost never truly addressed, almost as if to beat around the bush, almost as if to be afraid of being too dramatic. Instead, the show prefers to add other important themes like homosexuality, machismo, burnout, and more. These are all interesting themes, but they are only hinted at and never analyzed or explored in depth. The series thus chooses quantity over quality.

Other aspects that disappointed me, in short:
- secondary characters who convey the aforementioned important themes and nothing more. At one point, I think I counted a dozen characters but could only remember the name of one.
- Asa's parents. We know very little about them. The figure who is explored the most is her mother, while her father is relegated to two sentences throughout the series. Not to mention her father's family, which is completely nonexistent except for the funeral.

The series tries to be many things and then ends up doing nothing well. Overall, I don't recommend it, but if you're looking for a slice-of-life series with light drama, it might be worth it, especially for the relationship between Makio and Asa, but be aware of the series' limitations.
